I can’t believe what I’m hearing from these guys. Shameful. There is no doubt in my mind that was a violent play with intent to injure. I don’t care what guys did in the ‘70s, we know better now and need to protect the players better.

The thing people have an issue with is the fact that Matheson slams Pettersson to the ice after the legit hit. It was an unnecessary thing to do, and it caused a concussion. Petterssons height or weight should be irrelevant in this equation.

I have never heard of that guy in the middle before, but how can he possible call that a "push to the shoulder" and call the whole play, a hockey hit. He lightly bumps him and since he wasn't able to knock him over from the initial hit, he angrily attempts to hurt the player by throwing him hard to the ice/boards. Totally reckless and dangerous play by Matheson. Should miss at least 5 games.

You should not just protect star players you should care for everyone safety no matter what

I don't like the throwing to the ice Matheson did; that's not a hockey play to me. He pushed Pettersson into the boards to separate him from the puck. Alright, that seems fine. Why do you need to chuck them full-force to the ice? There's no need for a suspension for it, but rather a fine or a meeting for Matheson with the NHL. The only reason these three guys are propping this up so much is because Pettersson is so hyped up.

As a hockey play the hit was ok, but the can opener slam was excessive force. Period. It shouldn't matter how many points, or who it happens to. That was a dangerous play and if the league can't tell, they're blind.

I agree that the initial hit is legal. The SLAM (and i say slam because that is what it was) afterwards was not and as a result Pettersson was injured. Matheson has been suspended for two games and i feel if the Department of Player Safety wanted to send a message that actions with the intent to injure, he should have been given five games.

This guy in the middle actually said, “It’s unfortunate that he fell into a concussion...”. No it was not unfortunate because he was purposely SLAMMED into the ice as he was already falling in a defenceless position and his head bounced off the ice like a ping-pong ball. You're forgetting that EP faked Matheson out of his skates making him look bad seconds before he went after him. That also factors in the decision. Players should be protected from retaliatory hits with intent to injure.

I don't have a problem with the hit. And they're correct, you often see a push after such a hit. The problem is the push started from an upright position and Matheson's glove is almost down to the ice at the end of the push. This wasn't a simple shove while leaving the check, it was a WWE slam down. He should get 3 or 5 games. I've never seen a takedown like this in 50 years of watching hockey.

Here's my thought, take it or leave it. Hit is clean, push was intent to injure. That push was some street fighting for your life kind of push you see is world star fights. Suspension is inarguable. I really disagree with the guy in the center on this, and the other 2 are missing the mark.

Looked fine to me. I watched a condensed version of this game saw the hit and thought "nice" i didnt even see it was their rookie i just liked the hard styled hit and the grit showed. Now its a story? what the hell where was his team then to show Matheson whats up and punch him out? I like the Petterson kid but his team is soft and i didnt see nobody stand up for him.

Canuck fan here (yeah.. shut up. lol): As I see it, the initial check was legal, 100%. The extra slam at the end was excessive and completely unnecessary (does it send Petts a message? Sure. It also sends a message to the Canucks that it's open season on Maths). Matheson should have been given either two or four minutes for roughing (excessive force wasn't necessary in that scenario). It's absolutely unfortunate that Petts LANDED the way he did, which is NO ONES fault. But it IS the fault of Matheson for using excessive force after the hit, where none was needed. I don't know his history, but if this is his first conversation with the league, they just need to get it into his head that he can be effective with his style of play without that extra shit. Having said that, Matheson needs to watch his back when he plays the Canucks again. While there's not much chance of any stupid Bertuzzi nonsense (yeah, we didn't like that either), you get this kind of reputation against another team, expect to be a marked man. That's sports.

They have to look on whole picture .. Patterson dangled Matteson that hard that he sat on his ass.. and that's what he couldn't handle.. this wasn't unfortunate thing this what meant and he meant to injure him and therefore his suspension should be much longer that 2 games .. as you can see when Elias dangles around him Mike immediately came to him and pushed him with stick and took man to man defense on him just waiting for his revenge ....

Five max (maybe) and a fine. This was definitely out of frustration after Petterson made a good move to lose him. He made a great initial play to body check him on the boards, but you gotta let him go when he gets rid of the puck. All in all, there’s a difference between finishing your check, and Intent to injure. This was intent to injure.

It should be 3 to 5 game suspension but who knows the nhl is not consistent when it comes to suspensions

definitely no suspension. this has been a standard hockey play as long as ive been playing (since '95). Elias is a kid playing against men and he got dumpster'd. yeah it sucks but he just needs to get stronger imo

What Matheson did has nothing to do with "taking physicality out of the game." It was cheap and unprofessional. It was premeditated and clearly deliberate. He deserves mitigated retribution from the league for his actions. The league needs to hold this type of behavior to account otherwise the NHL ends up as a bush league. In the end the NHL loses and the fans loose as well. The penalty for such action has nothing to do with the physicality of the game.

Man so many dummies on here, what he did does happen literally every game. The difference is, a normal sized man hockey player doesn't go to the ice like that. What Matheson did was ok in my books, he's just not used to doing it to boys so the effect is way stronger. You always push your shoulder into other players along the boards, it usually knocks them off balance, when you do it to a featherweight though they go down.
