Western doctors have made it clear that normal age related decline isnt a good enough reason to prescribe men with testosterone because of the increased risk of cardio vascular disease from changes in certain blood markers. Absolutely. In fact, seniors are the group that would derive the greatest health benefit from them. They reverse the signs of aging, and muscle loss is among the primary symptoms. Remember, steroid were created to mitigate muscle wasting diseases, and there's no greater muscle wasting disease than aging. As for the risk, cardiovascular disease is already the #1 cause of death. So its not as if being prescribed will steroid will lower that number. As you mentioned, they will likely die of that regardless. Regardless of the doses given, you're not going to get big muscles unless you workout and diet. So we're taking 20% of the population even if the doses were high.

The big downside, IMO, is that you can't stop taking it once you start. Do I want to be a jacked 80 year old, having to pin twice a week until I die? Darn. The title pulled me in, but the content was WEAK. I know you guys can do better. I mean, at least acknowledge all the non-standard evidence that it *might* work -- the reason it is a potentially attractive idea, in the first place, in other words. If there are only dumb studies on it, why is that? Are we lay folk missing something? Is there a good biomedical reason that this on the surface plausible idea might be wrong? This topic seems so entirely in your guys' wheelhouse that the "there haven't been any good studies so we can't say anything" answer was really disappointing. We know sarcopenia is problematic. We know that our ability to build muscle diminishes with age. Why wouldn't a muscle-building agent have potential medical application? What is the counter-argument? Are there any case studies? Anecdotal evidence? Gym wisdom? What studies would you like to see and why aren't they being done? There are plenty of interesting angles on this topic. Unfortunately, none of them are discussed, here...
@DorianDeLuca
@DorianDeLuca 3 года назад
At about 2:55, Dr. Baraki says, "I want good evidence before I decide to give somebody a medication that has known risks and unknown benefits". This is, to me, the position that you want someone in their position to take. You can play games all day long with what "might" work, but that's not the model they're working from.
@BarbellMedicine
@BarbellMedicine 3 года назад
There aren't only "dumb studies" on it, but rather the existing evidence- much of which is relatively elegant and well-formulated- does not support a clear benefit relative to the risk in most situations. On the other hand, there's good evidence for use in situations like hypogonadism, for example. You'll note we didn't actually say "there haven't been any good studies so we can't say anything", so I'm not sure why you put that in quotes.
