Really enjoyed this video. would be really interested in a video around the theme of common nutrition errors or nutrition tips. e.g. underrated or overrated foods, things we care about too much or don't pay attention to. are homemade smoothies a terrible way of consuming fruit etc. Would also be interested in your take on steady state cardio vs HIIT, and long term clinical significance of various levels of cardiovascular fitness - being able to run 10 miles vs only a couple- in an otherwise healthy and relatively strong person.

Jordan Feigenbaum I know you are a starting strength coach and most likely do not condone any changes to the program. But do you have every trainee do power cleans ? I do them my self and when I did the novice program I did them. But for a novice would it not be more productive to deadlift once a week , rather than every 5th workout? Due to the fact that the absolute weight it rather low, one would imagine that at this level they could get away with more frequent training of the deadlift. Just curious of your thoughts. Thank you

Jordan, I've tried using a belt so many times, but I always bruise and it actually feels like my ribs get crushed when squatting. I've tried varying tightness and location and always the same effect: lots of pain/bruising. Consequently, I squat beltless. I'm not sure if I'm alone in this, but if I'm not, would love to hear your opinions, especially from a medical perspective. Thanks! :)

You couldn't be any more right about expectations. If you think it may work, it may actually work. For example, I had always thought working beltless would have a significant effect regarding core strength and it actually did. However, now I know that I would have gotten almost the same results by training with a belt. As I always say, your content is outstanding. Thanks a lot!

My first time dead lifting with a belt I shifted a floating rib in the right side pretty hard, hurt for weeks. The belt definitely didn’t seem too tight as I did manage to get a deep breath before the pull, since then I’ve stayed beltless, probably just post injury anxiety to not try it again. Ideas welcomed, thanks for another great video.

@rohanburke2322
@rohanburke2322 4 года назад
My guess would be you are either wearing it tompo tight which isnt allowing you to fully breath into your belly which in turn makes you feel less stable. Or, you might have a short torso which is causing the belt to pinch your skin against the belt and on a rib or hip bone when you hip hinge. Fixing the first problem obviously dont wear the belt to tight, fixing the second would be getting a narrower belt, or wearing your belt a little higher on your waist when you hip hinge. Otherwise maybe you just need to practice breathing into your belly, focusing on expanding your belly, obliques and lower back against the belt. But hopefully one of the Dr's gives you an actually educated answer!

I prefer velcro neoprene belts just based off of how comfortable they are. They dont dig into my body as much. Im short so big powerlifter belts dig into my rib cage. They dont gove as much support but they give enough to lessen my disc herniation issue enougj to squat and deadlift regularly

I've heard it recommended many times that competitive powerlifters should use 13mm thickness, but general strength athletes should use 10mm. Whats the rational for this. I get that more thickness = more support, but then why shouldn't everyone just get 13mm thickness?
@BarbellMedicine
@BarbellMedicine 6 лет назад
Dave I think that it’s pretty uncomfortable to wear compared to the 10mm and maybe a little overkill, but I wouldn’t argue against getting a 13mm belt either

@Xplora213
@Xplora213 6 лет назад
I suspect some aren't prepared to deal with the wear in time. I've got the 10mm rogue powerlifting belt and I'm thinking about another belt after 6-8 months. It's just not supportive enough. (my Max deadlift is only 410 pounds, take that into account)
@zachsimpson2008
@zachsimpson2008 6 лет назад
Rogues belts also arent the best quality either. If you got like an Inzer or a Pioneer( I love Pioneer) a 10mm would be better. I have a 13mm though and will probably never get a 10mm
@williamlexcrawford
@williamlexcrawford 6 лет назад
Dave I have a Pioneer, Inzer, and two Best belts. The Best belts are the best made, followed by the Inzer and then the Pioneer. I was pretty unimpressed with the quality of the Pioneer in all aspects, the hardware, stitching, and materials. I bought it several years ago so maybe they have improved but having a high level of customization on an inferior product wasn’t worth the trade off.

+Jordan Feigenbaum Hi, This is off topic. I'm a month and a half into Starting Strength and I'm just curious, I have two 1.25 pound fractional plates, would it be beneficial to go up by 2.5 lbs on squats each time instead of 5 lbs in any way (i.e. delaying stalling and extending linear progression)? Or would that be too small of an increment for squats? I would greatly appreciate your reply. Thanks.

Yes, of course because you are building in strength in all of your muscles involved in the unbelted lift and getting stronger at the genereal movement (which is similar belted and unbelted)

So most 10mm belts from what I understand really only have maybe 6.5mm of leather for support, then they're surrounded by ~3-4mm of suede, which I've been told doesn't offer any additional support and is purely for aesthetics on the outside and anti-slip on the inside. So would a 6.5mm leather (no suede) - 8.5mm belt (suede only on inside layer) be sufficient for most non-competing lifters?

Just remembered Adobe changed the text/title tool, title tool no longer there. But to align, its under Graphics tab at the top, (while editing the text) you should see Align and Transform to the right and its the first two icons underneath. I've never been able to wear a belt for anything other than OHP. For Squats and Deadlifts it just feel too uncomfortable and I've tried it in all the different positions I've heard about. I'm on my late 40s (makes me cry inside every time I say that) and I'm not that strong (this also makes me cry inside) and I've never had any workout related back injury, so I just don't use one. The reason I use one for OHP is because when I first started doing them I though I gave myself Belly Button Hernia (if that is even a thing). I have a friend who had a hernia in his stomach and had to have surgery for it and it was not a pleasant thing to go through.
