Should Parents Spank Kids? 

"Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him." Proverbs 22:15 - The Bible clearly states the way to raise children. It's too bad more people don't stand on the truths found in God's word! The world would be a much better place. We raised 4 children, and they are all now productive citizens. Sometimes, when I was ready to spank them, I would quote that verse and I would tell them, "I am NOT raising little fools!" Please understand that there IS a difference in child training and child abuse. If you train a child properly when they are small, they will know the difference. And if you start when they are small, you won't have to discipline as much as they get older. Another Bible verse - "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." - Proverbs 13:24 So I also told our children, "I'm doing this because I love you!" There are many more scriptures in the Bible that are a great help in raising children, if you just open God's word and search. So I guess my advice would be this - raise your children the way that God says - don't raise fools and LOVE your children often! YEE YEE!

WAKE UP! My dad was spanking me and said he will keep hitting harder if I kept crying. He called me a brat, a baby, an idiot. Oh, thats totally not abuse! HOW IS IT NOT?! Hitting your kids is not discipline….your scaring your kids wich is not right.

There have been studies done on how spanking effects the brain. Whether you do it with anger or not, somehow, it’s still the same effect. Also lights up the same part of the brain as sexual abuse. So great job. Just because you can’t see the detriments, doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Get over your power trip and learn to discipline correctly. Your child isn’t out to piss you off, they need to be guided and taught love by their parents, not fear.

I was not spanked as a child nor did a spank any of my children and we all turned out great. My kids would have probably preferred a quick spanking then then a talk and consequences. Not sure the message spanking gives a child? You do something I don't like, i'm going to hurt you? Are you hitting hard enough to cause pain? I think it's a confusing concept. I can hit you when you do something I don't like but it's not ok to hit others when they do the same. Why not raise a child you haven't purposefully inflicted pain on "to teach them a lesson" when there are other healthier options to raise happy, obedient, respectful adults? To each their own I guess.

I was spanked as a child and I do not agree with spanking. Spanking is lazy parenting. You do not need to hit a child to make them mind you. Children should not fear you, you should be a safe place.

I was never spanked as a child. Neither my two sons. I talked to my boys if they did something wrong. Also they did not have curfews. They knew they were nothing to do after 12 p.m. come on home. Both have college degrees, sweet wife’s and one son has two children. Both are Christians and go to church. One son is in his last semester second degree in the Baptist Seminary. God blessed me with awesome sons.

I raised 2 and never spanked. Either time out or took away electronic devices. Taking cell phones or X-box did the trick !

Not everyone has the right state of mind to spank. Even if you wait until you are calm, spanking can bring out anger in you. So I would not recommend it if you have a tendency to be quick to anger.

The Bible says he who does not chasteneth his child Hateth his child. I never heard any counting with my parents, correction was swift and strong. We had no doubt between right and wrong

I only got swatted twice, once for going down in the creek bottom during a flood and not getting home on time, mom n dad thought I'd drowned... and once for swinging 20 feet up a tree and screaming like a banshee. I was told I should only scream when in trouble. Learned to be home on time, and don't scream. Notice I didn't get in trouble for the flooded creek bottom or swinging high in the tree. Folks just expected kids to do risky stuff, but use common sense.

Granger and Amber the kids sure make great models. I know we’re not suppose to wish our kids to grow up fast but I’ll will be so proud to see London to become a vet. She will become a great one. As a now 26 year old.. so excuse me- (if I have no room to talk since I'm not yet a parent), although I think I would've been traumatized as a child if my parents used physical discipline like spanking when I was a child. I did not grow up in a authoritative household, therefore there was not tons of discipline in which I can see where Amber is coming from on the whole she wished she had more as a child, although I like that I didn't have that type of discipline because I know that my personality would've resented my parents in the future if so. There are other ways that are less abusive in my opinion!

A tap on the butt is ok if granted - but I could never hurt my child or make them (THAT) afraid of me. I have six and they were all very well behaved (not always perfect) but I taught them from small on....the word NO.....and I spent a lot of time with them talking to them explaining why they shouldn't or should do things. I never moved things.....I would tell them NO that's mommy's and bring them to their toys.....it's being consistent and not lazy that makes the difference! AS they get older make small disciplines don't lose it and not keep to your word...example.....you can't watch tv for a month - when that is being unreasonable.....say one night or an hour or two....etc. :)

As my son reached his teenage years my Pops would hear about the spanking and would tell me to take it easy on him. I couldn't help but laugh and say spare me, you didn't take it easy on me haha.

There's two sides to the coin with spanking. One is you're spanking your kid bceause you don't like what he's doing and trying to put him in line with physical force and fear. The other is spanking your kid, discussing why he's getting spanked and you reconcile immediately. Unfortunately, the latter is rarely ever done. I was not only spanked, but hit, pulled by the ear, whipped, and on top of all that, always left alone to cry alone. I'm not denying spanking COULD be effective if done effectively, however, I am not a supporter of it considering what happened to me. When my emotionally dysfunctional 5 year old son is having one of his tantrums and hitting either me or wife, we sit on the floor and wrap our arms and legs around him until he calms down constantly telling him that we love him and we're keeping him and everyone else safe, then after he's calm, we talk about acceptable choices. Slowly, but surely, it's going to sink in, just like with every kid. But I want him to know that his emotions are valid and we do not try to repress them, like was done with me growing up.

I remember years ago our pastor, in a sermon, said that God made butts for spanking. It is a padded area. I did spank, sad to say at first in anger but i learned to cool down first. Our youth were more polite and better behaved but also going to church helped them to be better adults. I was always afraid that God would see me doing wrong so i tried to not do wrong. I did, God saw me🙏, but God forgave me.

Spanking is totally fine I agree each kid responds different. My husband says don’t make me get out the Jesus belt and they know ok we need to repent and mind. We only spank not out of anger. We both grew up that we had to respect our parents.

There are so many issues that I have with my parents. But being spanked for being out of line and doing things that I knew were wrong is not one of them. I've never resented them for getting spanked.

Love your kids because so many people think all will. You spank them? You don't love them. The facts of the matter is there's so many people that grew up. They got spanked and it wasn't because nobody because people didn't love them was because people did love them, and they needed some kind of correction beyond just time out because time out does not always work. I was spanked a lot when I was a kid. I was a mean kid at times. WORST spankings were those my grandmother gave me. She's sit me down, and talk to me about what I did and I would just wish she'd go ahead and spank me and not talk to me because she was so soft, and loving, and it felt so bad I had disappointed her that the talking was worse than the spankings. I grew up and know better than, say, if I had stood in a corner or not been spanked or talked to. I see so many parents now days that just tell their child to stop, but don't do anything more than that. Then, a few years down the road that child without discipline thinks nothing about what they do and that it has no consequences. Spanking isn't for all kids, like you said with London. Sometimes a stern, fatherly or motherly talking to and explanation is all they need. Sometimes taking things away is better as they get older. And some a pop or two on the rear is all it takes. You really have to know your own children to know which is best. And knowing this as you guys do shows how great parents you are. I literally could live with you guys just to watch you with your kids because my wife and I never were able to have kids and watching how you all are so wonderful with the kids makes me so proud to have found you and your family. I don't think kids should be spanked. We teach them not to hit, yet people spank them, makes no sense. IMO, for what it's worth. You can stand them in the corner, or take things away. It really works. My son has never spanked his son, and that boy is the kindest kid ever! I never spanked mine, the corner worked great.

So I won’t do it I respect everyone else’s opinion but I won’t do it to my kids. My mom did it my grand father did it to my dad and I still won’t forgive him my dad hates his dad for spanking him as a child my dad said if his dad hit him that hard now days he would go to jail. I don’t want my kids hating me in my opinion I think there’s better ways to handle things then getting mad and hitting your kids.

There's this great book I recently read called The New Dare to Discipline by Dr. James Dobson. It's Christian based and explains things in a way I've never heard before, finding a good balance of love and discipline. In the book he says that past the age of 6, other things work better (Like how you mentioned getting things taken away). Would highly recommend!

that verse "raise your children the way that God says" and by spanking them?? I was when I was a kid and not once did I spank my kids, this affected me down the line. I am NOT going to watch your videos anymore as I lost respect for the both of you. Granger you should change your mind set on this as you are a performer and many of your audience wouldn't agree. My wife and I spank our kids BUT it has to be under the right circumstances on what they did. Other than that we talk to them with general parenting.

I don't think there is a thing wrong with spanking kids. I was spanked countless times, and never did I not deserve it. I was a defiant kid and needed correction. My dad never did it in anger, it was always with the correction and discipline in mind. My daughter does occasionally get a spank, but it usually isn't necessary, most of the time just the suggestion brings the behavior around anyways. I do agree with not counting, there's only one chance to do what you're supposed to, I'm not gonna try to drag it out of you. Kids need hard boundaries, and as they grow up the fruits of discipline show. I've never resented that my parents used physical discipline, it made me a respectful man that understands boundaries and appropriate behavior. I wish more parents would put that much effort in, we're raising adults, not children

No, parents should not spank their children. Use time outs. Never send children to their bedrooms for punishment, the bedroom is to be a safe space. When it is time to send children to bed they should not associate it with why I am a being bad

Wherever you land with for yourself and others, learn the telltale signs that it's gone too far and sending the wrong message. One symptom being hypervigilence/anticipatory anxiety. Withdrawal can be another one. Even if you're not spanking when you're angry, everyone should understand those lines. P.s. those Bible rod verses were not intended for the audience to apply towards pre-school age children. It's irresponsible to use that as your support of it and misinterpret the whole meaning behind it. Spanking very young children only became the expectation later on due to a variety of historical contextual reasons.

After experiencing & witnessing physical abuse(not by my parents), I’m very cautious of physical punishment. I almost feel like I’m saying I’m going to hit you because you hit your brother and hitting is bad. With my first two I tried to be the disciplinarian because their dad was too rough to all of us. I do know that by the age of 2 if you don’t have control of the discipline in your home you are already behind. Even babies 12-18 months are learning how to push boundaries. Make your no NO! Stay consistent. I read never use your hand. I had a little wooden spoon that I’d pop against my leg to judge the force. I love the adults my children are though each one of them went through some rough times dealing with childhood issues.

I was spanked. All I had to see was my dad reach for his belt ..and that usually did the trick. Discipline is vital. But God and love had to be at the core.

I was spank as a child spanking again is a good discipline if done correctly and not to the extent where it leaves a red mark or bruises or breaks skin. Kids, teenagers, any even in their 20s you can prove they were not discipline because of their actions and what they say.

No kids should not be spanked. All it does is teach them violence is OK when your upset with someone. Not rocket science people.

I so agree never spank out of anger. I would spank if it was life threatening like running out in the street or knowing the end result of the situation was going to cause harm to your child, like sticking something in a electrical outlet. My son is 24 and now is a time for reflection, I asked him was I fair when I disciplined him and he said “Yes I knew where I stood and if I didn’t straighten up I was in for the consequence.” We taught him from a small age a saying that help him think, Every action I make comes with a consequence and whether good or bad I have to except that consequence. Absolutely, if they need it! I was raised that way, and I was a difficult child 😆. I came out just fine, no therapy for me.

My Momma made me pick my own switch off the weeping willow tree. If I chose a real small one she would go get a big one. I have nothing but respect and love for my Momma. She was a single Mom and I was a brat and my brother was a bigger brat so we deserved those spankings. Did y’all get paddled by the principal in school too? I did one time for something that someone else did but I was blamed for it. When my Mom read the note I was sent home with for it she asked me about it. I told her that I didn’t do anything wrong and had no part in using paint on the chalkboard and I never wrote any nasty words on the chalkboard. I told her who did do it and I told her the principal didn’t care to hear me say anything about it so I got paddled hard with his big wooden paddle that bruised my butt. To say the least Momma went into school with me in tow the very next morning and confronted the principal about the situation. He was completely caught off guard when she said I believe you need to be given the same treatment you gave my daughter and without explanation as well. I expect both your buttocks to be bruised as badly as my little girl’s are. He attempted to say that I painted the chalkboard but she cut him off and asked him if he asked me if I was involved. He stumbled for words knowing he just automatically assumed I was guilty because I was sitting at my desk doing nothing wrong other than telling the two kids that did do it that they were going to be in big trouble. They threatened me with a beating if I said anything. I guess because I was the only one in the classroom I was automatically guilty. So I got one lick for each naughty word on the chalkboard and there were six colorful words. I was so scared of the principal because he was so angry I just cried and took the paddling. After it was over I felt so humiliated and I was made to apologize to the teacher, the entire class, and the janitors who had to clean it. My Mom could be heard throughout the halls using a few of those very same colorful words on the chalkboard while she was dutifully schooling the principal about the use of his big wooden paddle with tiny holes in it. He attempted to ask why I never said anything about not doing it and my Mom said to him if you were a little girl in second grade in a new school and an angry man pulls her out of her chair takes her to his office and tells her to bend over a chair while being scolded at and told he will be correcting her bad behavior by use of the paddle. While striking my little girl scaring her terribly and telling her that that type of filth is not going to happen to his school. To say the least the principal apologized to me and my Mom and did punish the two kids that did do the naughty words. I feel like he should have had to apologize to me in front of the whole school, but he never padded me again after that! Mess with Momma’s baby y’all might as well run and hide!😂

We saved spankings for moments where the kids did something that wasn’t safe for them only. For instance, running into the street. But it needs to stop when they reach the age where talking and reasoning works. My husband spanked our son bare butt when he was 12. I told him never again. But spankings were rare in our house. I believe they can get over used and make the kids feel it is ok to hit back.
