Gaaahhhh I actually have something to contribute: Jae was right on his first part of his sentence: "relationships are about meeting in the middle." Meeting in the middle insinuates that you or your partner are actively integrating themself into the interests or desires of their partner. While compromise infers a loss, that in making a change or a choice that was not your ideal; someone loses and that feeling of loss can breed resentment.

Partners don't need to have the same love language. It's more about understanding that people are different and have different needs or ways of feeling that they are being loved. And that is what knowing the other person's love language can help you with. (So yes I agree with Jae and Producer Diane don't use this as a match making tool lol).

For some reason I love hearing Jae stating the obvious. Like of course if you love someone you try to meet each other in the middle and try to understand each other, of course there are edges in your puzzle pieces that need some work on, etc.

I feel if someone dated someone who was 100% the same as them, there wouldn't be any sacrifice that comes with a relationship so they wouldn't grow. Maybe that's what they want, but to me, that sort of life would seem so bland and unsatisfying.

Personal as someone who has been married 30 years. I can tell you marry someone just like you, is not always the best the way my husband is the an exact opposite of me. It works wonderfully . We pick up where the opposite lacks , we stretch where we are limited in desire for certain things. Love languages learning is great it helps us love ( Wether in friendship or relationship, even with Childern and family members) those in our lives the way they need love, not the way we need it. It opens are minds to see people in a different light.

'Love language' is NOT just about just about 'stuff'. It does fall under a broader umbrella of shared values - that value being open to participate in activities the other likes, nurturing AND not giving 'the other' space when needed. Worst version of love language is co-dependence or expecting the other to read your mind. Frankly, dating a carbon copy of yourself is not a good thing because you'd miss out on new things. Similar interests overlap is helpful, but not necessary. Flexibility is. Similar upbringing may make things easier, but not necessary. A good example of love language mismatch is when one person really likes to get things and the other expresses affection by doing thoughtful things (i.e. helping with tasks, holding hands/hugging even if it's uncomfortable because of upbringing), etc. It is about taking your partner's needs into consideration, understanding that what may be meaningless to you (like the other's type of music, needing an hour to unwind after work, being more or less tactile/public PDA, a type of rectrational activity, etc) Compromise is not just about 50/50. There will be times when it may be 30/70 and fluctuate. When people are together for a long time both change and unless there is a steady, on-going attention paid to the partner's changes people drift apart. A funny example of crossed signals is in Steve Martin's 'Father of the Bride' whern his daughter almost breaks up with her attentive fiance because he gives her a blender (?!) instead of jewelry as a gift. It turns out (as he tells her father) that he did that because her favorite thing ever is making banana milkshakes and he wanted to give her the best tool to do this. Once she finds out, it's all great.

I have different love language with my partner. I love receiving gift and he loves quality time. But, just because we speak different love languages, doesn’t mean all bets are off when it comes to being in an awesome relationship. Its need compromise. I don't like compromise either but its a must if we want to make a relationship work. I love Jae's opinion. This man is hubby material.

never been through relationships but if a person ask me why are they obsessed with things (gifts), well its not about the gifts, its about the effort and thought of that person who'd gone through to have that gift for someone and thats what you really receive other than the gifts. Emotions are what makes us humans.

in my pov, partners dont need to have the same love language.. ur relationship still depends on how u value and respect each other.. how u'll help each other grow in every aspect of life while being happy with/for each other. there'll be ups and downs where each should compromise for it to work.. if it doesnt work, maybe you're not made for each other...

Isn't it more about learning what your partner likes, and your partner learning about what you like. This is the first time i'm learning about this love language thing, and i had a conversation about it with a friend. Like, people are different. There are people who love differently than they want to be loved. For example, i love giving gifts. I sometimes see a thing that reminds me of a person in my life and buy it for them. It doesn't mean i like Receiving gifts. In fact, things make me uncomfortable. I'm more into people telling me "hey, good job" for something i did, for them or in general. So Jae is right about the puzzle pieces, even if adjusting and compromising is not really the way to describe it. Well, in the ideal world. Of course there are people who jump to Become the perfect person for someone. I don't believe in doing things that way. Everyone's needs are important in a relationship.

Me and my significant other often joke that we are exactly the same but with different personalities. Not that I believe personality types wholeheartedly, but my MBTI is INFJ and they're ESTJ. Ideally, you should just fulfill the other person's LL that is possible for you. My LL is quality time and affirmation, but I can't fulfill that... I would have to completely change as a person for affirmation to come to me. It's SO HARD and uncomfortable. I naturally do (in order) acts of service, gifts, and physical touch. I could do quality time (like asking for it) after a lot of communication and affirmation every once in a while but every day, I would break up. It's not me. Relationships are about compromise, but sometimes it just not you.
