Is keeping reptiles good or bad for the reptile. Should reptiles be kept in captivity. The sad thing is that we can not at this time replicate nature in the reptiles enclosure perfectly but is the reptile natural habitat actually perfect?
No!

A captive reptile doesn't have to worry about predators or having to find enough food.

I was just reading an article about predation For reptiles, predation was roughly twice as frequent in juveniles as in adults, with predation accounting for more than 95% of documented deaths of juvenile reptiles . Survival rates of turtles were higher than of snakes , lizards being the lowest. Top 3 causes of reptile deaths were predators, malnutrition, and disease. Very few wild reptiles actually survive to adulthood , egg species being the worst at like 1 in 10. Aquatic , and live birth bigger species being better. Now think of how many reptiles have full enriched lives because they are a pet rather than a avian appetizer. I think that says it all. I do think we need to rescue first when looking for a little one to raise.

Some people just need to spend more time in nature rather than watching romanticized cartoons. As a farmer, I've met many folks who have a misguided view of "the wild," equating it with their personal desires. "The wild" isn't a life of perfect freedom in a paradise without borders and rules; "the wild" is a constant struggle for basic survival. Sometimes the very people who (rightly) object to pet neglect will with the next breath declare that all animals should be in nature, not realizing that the conditions in nature are often far worse than even in a "neglectful" home..just ask any coyote dying of mange, or any deer overwhelmed by ticks. By contrast, the human urge to improve upon nature is the reason we have wild-animal rescuers and rehabbers who bring in the sick, suffering, and abandoned babies (like those adorable flying foxes) and rear them. In the wild, these would die a slow or violent death. In keeping reptiles, we're not actually trying to recreate nature per se, but the perfection of Eden, where there is ample food that meets all nutritional requirements, a clean environment, fresh water, lack of predators, medical care if necessary, and healthy environmental conditions without droughts, storms, or floods. By creating this slice Paradise, we are rewarded by seeing what these animals would be like under conditions FAR superior to those often found in the wild. Shockingly enough, some of these animals even seem to enjoy and seek out human contact, care, and the opportunity for extra food and mental stimulation that being around a human often provides.

The reptile hubby has change lot in the past 10 years. Just think what it be in another 10 years. If they are getting the best care that great. But people that think reptile are less than dogs or cats don't need to keep them. Because reptile can be just as great as any dog or cat.

Hi, My two pennyworth. This is a very contentious subject with two sides to the equation, the for's and the animal rights people. Each has a right to their opinion, right or wrong, and this will never change, it is human nature. I guess there is only one higher entity (you know who I mean if you are a believer) who created all living things, who would know the answer. My view is that it is OK as long as the creature is WELL LOOKED AFTER, and leads a happy longer life. It is the creatures that are NOT WELL LOOKED AFTER that I feel so sorry for. I think the latter happens with creatures who are kept by owners who simply must have MORE AND MORE, the owners burn out and become neglectful, and the creatures suffer as a result. - Heavy duty food for thought. I do draw the line at keeping a Lion in the back garden as a pet :-) Remember, an Elephant is not just for xmas :-)

My thoughts are that if a reptile thats habitat is getting destroyed is kept in captivity, that means it will never go extinct... Nice video princess
