Should Riding Solo be Outlawed?

I love riding with people most of the time but I think that there are a lot of benefits to riding solo too. A lot of recent noise has been slating the solo riders of the world, labeling them as dangerous. What do you think?

Luckily, I think all the negativity towards solo riding is a few safety focussed individuals and it won’t come to anything. Of course there is no way it can be ‘banned’, that would be like putting ban on walking alone, hiking, cycling or even driving.

If it were banned that is me more or less done with exercise. None of my mates locally ride MTB , and honestly not excited at riding with folk I don't know well. And like many folk, after a really tough week at work the time alone achieving a bit of flow on a good day is precious. Also, and I hope I am not tempting fate, all my biggish accidents have been on roads. At 48 I am anyway much more autious off road and haven't had a fall or accident for a good while.

I didn't realise that solo riding had become a hot topic! I always ride alone now as my normal group of friends have retired from the sport due to family life etc. I'd love to ride with others but don't get the chance or know anyone else so it's the solo life for me. Finally, you're right about the clearing head space comment though but I still miss a 'hack' with the boys 😢. Another great / thought provoking video...keep up the good work 👏

I don't have any mates, but then again I'm not that adventurous either! So it all levels out! Loads of camping videos that show how to stay safe and in touch in the wild, if you want to. Garmin InReach, that kind of thing. But honestly, a quick risk assessment in your head is as good as anything.

It's not dangerous if you're sensible.. I ride solo 90% and I wouldn't get much riding done if I had to rely on others to come with. I also have a job and a family to take care of, I can't be incapacitated for 6 months without big consequences.. So I have to ride sensibly even if I'm with mates. Of course if I want to progress and hit a bigger drop than I'm used to etc, I'll wait and bring a friend who can carry me out of the woods! :) Also the garmins etc can detect crashes and send texts with location to people.. that's good help too! But at the end of the day, riding within your ability, not doing stupid shit, is what gets you home in one piece! Alas, self-assesment isn't men's greatest mental asset and I see alot of beginners doing stuff they shouldn't. I think we all need to stop the whole "just send it" mentality and start being the kind of friend who tells you to maybe not do it this time.. Hmm. this turned into a long comment..

I almost always ride solo. Only one of my friends is into mtb and he works shifts so isn’t always available. As an older, female rider most of the riders I meet probably wouldn’t want me to tag along and I love the feeling of being able to empty my head and just be in nature. If I come across a situation I find challenging, I can always get off and push lol and with iPhones and Apple Watches etc I’m not ever alone really.

I assume they don't know about the smart watches / bike computers with Incident Detection on them..? I'm mainly a solo rider, but my wife always knows where I am. Garmin sends my live location. On more than one occasion I've come off (luckily just small stupid slips so far) and she has received an automated text with my location. A quick phone call or an "I'm alright" follow up text later and I'm back off riding . Nice to know it's there if I never need it though

I can second this. It's my time away from work, renovation and the family (and I don't mean that in a bad way at all as I'm a Dad that does everything with the kids). But getting that time to be free and explore without having to make other people feel like they have to do it is super important. In the early days (over 20 years ago now), I really wanted my wife to get into riding once my mates all stopped riding but I've come to realise that she doesn't like it, and I similarly like pushing on with the pace and planning where I want to go. Solo riding is awesome.

Solo riding has always been my goto and my favourite. I like riding with other people but MTB has always been my me time and opportunity to get away and just explore. When not with other people I don't have to worry about taking a second to admire something or ask if we could try a new route. I'd even do something like ArdRock on my own (granted there's plenty of people around) just to take my own time

If i didn't ride solo it would probably mean i would rule out 2/3s of my riding. There is a risk to almost everything we do on or off a bike, and if your driving to get to your ride the most dangerous part of your day is likely to be the journey there and back in your car. when im out on my own i wind it in a bit but never so much that i stop having fun.

I often ride The Dog at Cannock on my own. First light on a Sunday morning is a great time and as you pointed out, you never see anyone! I love having the trails to myself and being able to take my time or mess about on sections to improve my riding. I will say, back on September I took a nasty fall and banged my head on a rock cracking my helmet. I finished the section and sat on the grass for a little bit before heading back to my car. A few people eventually came by and asked how I was but in that moment I really did wish I'd been with my friends! It's not stopped me from going out on my own though 🤣7

I always enjoy riding my MTB and eMTB solo, as I have often ridden solo on my motorbikes over more than 50 years, and even used to quite often head off into the mountains to go ice, snow and rock climbing climb by myself (when my climbing mates were having rest days) and loved the solitude. I have often gone bush walking by myself and even done many really big night walks and climbs. I do not try to impose my standards onto other people and do not expect others to try to impose there standards onto me, and have pretty much been very independent since I was a very young child.

I'm 65 years old & haven't got any friends to go cycling with! I i often worry about accidents & being chased by mad dogs, but that's just a part of life, isn't it? Does that mean we can't drive a car without a passenger just in case we have an accident or a breakdown,

Both types are great. Solo is good for exploring, you can take your time & not feel pressured by others. You just have to be careful & ride within your limits. When riding in a group, I love the company & makes it more fun, I feel I can push myself & try features I wouldn’t when riding solo as I know someone is there if I do crash.

Most of my rides are early morning before most people even wake up. Empty parking lots and nobody on the trails, both summer and winter. But with age I am much more careful, especially since I ride in a very technical, rocky area. I no longer feel the need to do all technical sections.

I kayak as well where friends can really help if you get into trouble, less convinced in biking. You can walk out of most crashes and the ones you can't, well your mates don't have stretchers or helicopters, so they are really just there to call emergency services

I'll often ride alone and can cover 50 odd miles, which for me is nice to get away from the stresses of work and the like and it is not always possible for others to join me. Before I go somewhere I check on maps for things to see/do and explain to my partner before leaving that I will be riding here today and will probably take the camera and drone to go and visit some bunkers, or sites of interest for example, which might not be agreeable if I was not out on my own. The keys I believe are informing others of your route and possible diversions and not trying anything that has the potential to harm yourself, that would be better to do with a friend or friends

It won't be banned. This argument has been around all my 49 years of life. Back when I first heard it was in relation to mountaineering and, guess what, I've climbed a lot of mountains on my own. I've also had more near misses both climbing and riding because I was with other people and trying to keep up with them or getting a bit too brave because I had an audience. On my own I tend to be a bit more risk averse because I don't have help to hand. What I would add to your great suggestions is that all riders - solo or not - should have a a good first aid kit on them and know how to use it. And they should have a bit of extra kit with them in case they have to sit in place waiting for rescue.

It was a few people on Instagram reels and tick-tock. Some were really new riders (and obviously struggling on the easy trails) and others were just walkers moaning about cyclists. Either way they had very limited views on what our MTB actually is. I have nothing against people learning and not feeling confident riding on their own, but don’t try and ruin it for everyone else. Next time a video crops up I will share it on my Insta.

Best thing about solo riding no waiting for the faffers & fettlers in the car park. Before I had kids my hobby was scuba diving. If my usual dive buddies weren't available I'd dive solo, rather than buddy up with someone I didn't know. Used to get grief for that as well, despite the fact the most dangerous thing you'll ever encounter underwater is a panicking diver.

I've never heard about this before but I'm certain it's propagated by the same people who'd ban smoking, drinking and beg for a lock-down if there was a risk of getting a sniffle. Busybodies, to put it politely. The problem is that they do have a good point with all those issues. But I think they fail to appreciate the long term effects not only on individuals but society of restricting what people can do with their own body. Personal autonomy ftw.

It would be wrong to outlaw solo riding. My level of risk taking is my choice and my choice alone. I make every decision on where I go and what I do and factor in being alone. Of course when I’m solo I take less risk than when I do with a friend. Take water, food, lights, the correct clothing, and a fully charged mobile phone. If you can’t survive with all these things then you lack common sense imo.

Can't condone solo riding, having spent many hours downhilling alone. But always respect the trail and your ability, depending on the situation. Having suffered a serious accident, I was lucky to be supported by bike park medics, my friend and a bunch of other lads who hung around helping me onto my rescue by helicopter and surgery. I couldn't move, so I needed someone. I was lucky, my full body armour and helmet means I will ride again. Although I'm looking at neck braces too. Great video 👍 Security/safety can also be an issue when riding alone, but I agree with the peace riding offers.
