Many schools in the U.S. have added a new digital tool to monitor students when they go on bathroom breaks. Jayar Jackson, Cenk Uygur, and Ben Gleib discuss on The Young Turks. Watch LIVE weekdays 6-8 pm ET. ru-vid.com...

"e-HallPass, a digital system that students have to use to request to leave their classroom and which takes note of how long they’ve been away, including to visit the bathroom, has spread into at least a thousand schools around the United States.
The system has some resemblance to the sort of worker monitoring carried out by Amazon, which tracks how long its staff go to the toilet for, and is used to penalize workers for “time off task.” It also highlights how automated tools have led to increased surveillance of students in schools, and employees in places of work."

I was a teacher for 9.5 years. It always astonished me how many teachers willingly withhold bathroom privileges for students. My policy, ya say you need to go-then go. If your classroom is engaging kids tend not to want to leave. Stupid policies like this do nothing to actually help improve education and just funnel school resources to big tech companies. What a total waste of time and money. Maybe stop doing this crap and use that money to build more classrooms and pay teachers more.

I honestly believe my bladder issues were caused from being denied to go to the rest room in public school because "I should have made time in between classes". We only had five minutes to get our books and go across the school to the next class. I could never make it in time and if you have three or more tardies in a class they reduceed you a grade letter.

Yeah, I always thought those bathroom restrictions in school were BS most of the time. If nature demands I go to the bathroom, I'm going. When I taught some entry level college math classes as a grad student, I had some students still ask to go to the restroom because I guess they were used to high school. So, I told students that if they needed to use the restroom they don't have to ask; they can just leave and come back.

@@Dreamprismwhen i was a kid, i got chewed out by my parents for not telling them i was going to the bathroom while we were doing something (this was at the house, if it was at a store or something i could get), since then i have had it wired in my brain i need to always inform someone im leaving the area. i dont know if it is a matter of "i want this thing done immediately" from people in charge (parents, teachers, what have you) or if its just a thrill of knowing where someone is every second of the day, but i can see the kids getting terrified at the thought of some sort of punishment for not asking to leave to piss

The irony is that teachers have bladder issues too because they are often not allowed to use the bathroom at liberty because they can't leave students unsupervised. Even during their lunch, elementary school teachers are limited to a half hour lunch in which they have to drop off students, warm up food, eat then pick up their students on time. Sometimes teachers are told to eat lunch with their students with no break at all. Planning times are usually meetings and they must show up on time with very little consideration for bathroom breaks. Education is not what people think it is. Teachers are blamed if students are playing in the restroom, unaccounted for, roaming the halls, or missing instruction.

This reminds me of my freshman year of high school, where once the bell rang I had to quickly get from one classroom on one side of campus to the opposite end of the school. It felt like a mission to get there because of trying to get around the other students and the teacher who made no exceptions for arriving after the tardy bell. Luckily the school gave us 8 minutes to get to class. But I had no time to talk to anyone, let alone go use the restroom. One day I wanted to explain a situation in class with my teacher once the class left. I only decided to do that as long as my teacher would write me a pass to get to that class.

Part of this is because of parents. The crazy ones to be specific. So many parents ask me to track their kids’ bathroom breaks and admin makes me do it. It takes so much time out of my day because I have to write down when they went, when they came back and parents want me to let them go even when I’m in the middle of teaching (which is incredibly distracting for everyone). On the flip side, I once had a kid who went 6+ times a day. Insisted that it was an emergency every time. Mom and dad came into the school and demanded that I be fired because it was October of second grade and their kid couldn’t write yet. I brought up her bathroom breaks because there were so many and she often missed about an hour of school everyday. I had to produce a time sheet of her bathroom breaks (there was on in the back of their agendas admin made us use - and thank goodness in this one case). They still demanded that I should be fired but they had no grounds so they just made my life hell for the year hoping I’d go on stress leave… That was the same year we came back from COVID (2020-2021 school year). And people wonder why teachers are at their limits. Point is, parents made bathrooms an issue and the schools had to respond…

The concept of making school not just about education but about life skills. But no the powers that be concentrated on control and containment. If you make learning accessible and interesting you might just reach a majority of the students. But as usual the powers that be spend money on things that have little to do with education or the needs of the students. For information on what students and teachers need try asking them and not spending money on consultants who take your money and tell you either the things the students and teachers have already told you or they wasted you time and money just to suck up to the powers that be.

Something that didn’t occur to the 3 men covering the story: girls often take longer in the bathroom for multiple valid reasons. Sitting down to pee takes longer than whipping it out at a urinal. The last word in the last post was supposed to be love not live. In the life of jesus he didn't look down or respond to people with anger or disdain he made efforts to enrich the people around him. He also forgave those who wronged him. For example Judas and this part will get some Christians up in arms. Jesus forgave Judas for his betrayal not just because that was who jesus was but because jesus knew that Judas was fulfilling his destiny which was set by God. The death of jesus happened exactly how it was destined to be. But back to the subject it is man who changes the narrative because God gave people free will and he did that because he wanted his children to love him and do right because they chose to not because he made them. Somehow the Republican politicians and the others have switched the narrative where good became bad and bad became good. For instance any programs that help people and their lives is seen as 'bad' in other words socialism. And the only people deemed worthy of help are the multimillion and multibillion dollar corporations and the richest people. They are in turn only obligated to pass on the wealth to the politicians and those who help keep that system in place. In the area of corporations getting what they want is a bipartisan effort. Although that is the most that the corporate Democrats do wrong in the grand scheme of things. Other than that the Democrats at least try to make sure people don't lose their civil rights and try to do the right thing mostly.

Omg, what? This sounds like a workaround for large classrooms in which the students can't be monitored naturally by a live teacher. THAT'S the reason it's bad. The privacy paranoia surrounding the tool is just a distraction from the fact that we aren't doing what it takes to ensure adequate numbers of skilled, qualified teachers in our public schools. It's always easier to get one-time funding for new tech than it is to get an increase in funding for sustained, ongoing expenses like labor. I guarantee someone sold this to administrators as a "cost-cutting" measure that would make it easier to "safely manage" large numbers of students with fewer faculty.

Lot of ignorance on show in this piece and the comments. Tracking does not always mean putting a dot on a map, and this system is just making digital what could already be done with memory or paper. It just makes it easier on both students and teachers to handle hall passes, and lets staff that see students outside of a classroom check their app without bothering the student to find out if they are allowed to be there.

I recently came across your channel and I thought it was pretty informative, but honestly this video completely discredited you. Do your research, you're journalists! Did you even talk to a teacher? This is an incredibly tone deaf piece tbh. It presumes either teachers are assholes who want to surveil students or we're incompetent. This video autoplayed and I had to double check that I wasn't somehow watching a reactionary conservative channel, my goodness. Do you know how much behavioral paperwork and outreach a teacher has to do on top of lesson planning, assessment tracking, etc? A tool that's honestly no more invasive than a pen an paper comes along that would make our lives easier and you make us out to be *villians* in response? If you'd spent any time in a classroom these days you'd know there's not much we can do for kids who abuse the bathroom system. You've got a kid who asks to go every day and leaves for 20 minutes? Sure call home. Parents don't/can't do anything about it. And you can't deny the kid from going, that'd be cruel. If you try to deny them they change their tune the next day to, "Ms. I got my period can I go to the nurse," or "I don't feel well can I go to the nurse," and there's like 3 pandemics going on so you can't say no. If you get guidance or a dean involved they can't do much either, there's 1 of them for every 500 students, they're busy. Hall monitors can't stop them because they have a valid pass. And you're saying teachers should just get the respect of the students and this wouldn't happen? That's offensive bull crap. I can have the respect of a student and they'll still pull this crap because they can't make good decisions, they're 16. I wish they could just make better decisions, but the decision making part of your brain doesn't fully develop until 25 yrs old. Kids literally can't always make the best decisions for themselves. (and yes even high school kids).

On the fence on this one - there needs to be control of movement to prevent mischief. But this would provide more information than necessary. It could be used to predict and track a girl's period. Who gets access to this? Why can't they just use hall cameras?

We used this in my high school, it’s honestly not that bad. Because the old system we used, people would take advantage of “using bathroom” bc people would be gone for 15-30 minutes at a time. It’s also used for other things besides using the bathroom.

How long before schools implement the six sigma management style of Amazon? Get your TAKT time up kids, those questions won't fill themselves in, now answer answer answer! To get anyone interested in learning anything, you need to make it relatable. Play to a student's interests, and know that those may be all different.

I have a disease called interstitial cystitis which is a bladder condition. I’m very sensitive toward kids who have bathroom issues. I NEVER say no to kids going to the bathroom but I do develop a level of trust so I can discern who is probably wandering or who is being truthful. I try to make my class a place that kids don’t want to escape from.. I also let them know if they need a breather they can go take a five minute walk and come right back or go wash their face or whatever. However this system would make me feel a lot better knowing where they’re all at. With the teacher shortage class sizes are getting larger and larger. It’s extremely difficult to know where all your kids are at if they’re going in and out Willy Nilly for different periods of time. If I let 1 of my 30+ kids go to the bathroom and they’re gone 20 minutes and the office calls for them to check out and I say “they’re in the bathroom” and they really aren’t in there or if I say “umm I’m not sure where they are”, the parent will say I’m irresponsible for not knowing where their child is and for making them wait to check out their kid. If you’re not a teacher you don’t know everything that goes into it. If one of my students says they’re going to the bathroom and I look at this app or whatever and see they’ve been gone 45 minutes there might be a problem.. I implore any of you to come and be a teacher for a week and see how stressful it is being responsible for the lives of 30+ kids and being held responsible for there whereabouts

I attended a private Christian highschool (which doesn’t exist anymore, thank Satan), and when I first started there, I noticed that students just got up and left the class when they wanted to use the restroom. Teachers didn’t even bother stopping students. Eventually I got on-board, and it was nice to just be allowed to get up and go when I have to. It even made me value the things I was missing more.

I wasn't diagnosed with Chris until my colon perferated after my third child was born at the age of 31. It was horrible for me growing up bc I was not believed. I was always suffering bc the teachers wouldn't let me go to the bathroom when I needed to. Bc when I did go I was in there a long time. And they thought I was just trying to get out of class.

If I had to go, I went. If the teacher or schooled wanted to claim I didnt go or wasnt allowed to, then they had to prove I did not go. They never said a word after that to me

As a teacher at a school where this is used, I can say their take is incorrect. I basically just set up a pass to go wherever the kids want to go and approve it. It doesn't have a GPS component or anything. As soon as they're out of my classroom I have no idea where they actually are. They could say they're going to the bathroom and run to meet their friend instead. It does know all the passes in the school at one time so you don't accidentally send 5 kids to the library when it already has 30 kids. I mark when they get back myself. It keeps track of how many passes I have given to a single student, but if you're paying attention you already know what kids are abusing the passes. TLDR it's not as bad as they made it out to be, it tracks number of passes not students.
