Thank you for talking about this. The diamonds aren’t “redeemed” just because they stopped fighting Steven. I think the issue is the fan base assuming they’re changed out of context. I would say the same of peridots arch. She wasn’t “redeemed” until after she betrayed yellow, which was half a season after she stopped fighting the crystal gems on a regular basis. In short, there’s still more that these characters need to learn and work on

Forgiveness is never given freely, it must be earned. On that note, it seems like the Diamonds are working really hard to earn the trust of Steven and his crew. Now, before anyone decides to bring up their past behavior...for like, the eleventeenth time; let me remind you all of someone else who performed similar actions. Two words: Prince...Vegeta! Since his childhood, he had performed countless atrocities while under the command of Frieza. Even after he defected from his ranks, he STILL killed many people for giggles; good AND evil. Then, after the events of the Namek Saga; everyone's begun to show kindness towards the Saiyain Prince. In time, he even becomes one of the good guys...just like the Diamonds. My point is that while people have begun to forgive the Diamonds, in spite of their genocidal actions in the past. Such behavior is not uncommon in the world of media. After all, the surest and swiftest way to defeat one's enemy...is to make them your friend

Honestly, I think the only diamond I can really even feel a tad of sympathy for is Blue. I feel she's the most empathetic of the three and possibly the most influential Diamond since she sort of portrays more emotion than yellow and white. She and Steven can actually do something to improve the world.

White Diamond knew that Pink didn't die but let Yellow and Blue believe it for thousands of years. Is it cool if I just point that out real quick?

Honestly, I don't think we have enough information to accurately decide whether he did the right thing. And perhaps that's for the best. It leaves it more...... uncertain, that way. In life we're never sure if we made the right choice, or the best choice, and that's what's going on here I think. We aren't supposed to know the best way to handle the diamonds because they're so different from us. We can only try what works and see what doesn't and move on from there. And that's pretty much how any interaction with anyone goes, diplomatic or otherwise

Blue felt like the easiest and more well-handled one. Yellow seemed a bit rushed yet plausible. White was messed up. There was no time to "redeem" her and her whole turn around from being an all-powerful god that could mind control you into being a soulless drone to "oh no I blushed so that means I won't try to kill you now" was just...ugh...it was trash. She got little screen time, little interaction time, big hype, and it ended poorly.

I really didn’t like how they were treated I. change your Mind, I mean, I can understand Blue being the first one to be redeemed, Yellow I thought was a little rushed, but White Diamond, the most mysterious of the 4, and yet she was redeemed by being roasted.

I want to see how Steven would react about trying to redeem these characters if things got really hard. Like if the diamonds or Spinel were directly responsible for the death or shattering of someone Steven actually knew and he couldn't get them back. THEN we would see if Steven's compassion could really be put to the test. It would just put him in the same boat as the other crystal gems, I'm sure Blue Diamond personally had plenty of Ruby or Sapphire's friends shattered. It's easy for Steven to dismiss what they did since they never did it to him.

I think what a lot of people forget is that the diamonds have only just begun to properly change. Sure, they helped heal corruption in Change Your Mind but that one instance won't immediately make them redeemed. They've done a lot of awful things to a lot of plants and species, which is not okay by any standard, not to mention they abused Pink for a long time. They have a chance to change and they are doing their best to. They've only had 2 years to change millions of years worth of atrocities and a lot of people are quick to judge them because of that. You cannot change that quickly, even for someone you care about. It just isn't possible. That's like committing 10 years worth of heinous crime, being arrested then being asked 2 minutes after being put in the cell if you've seen the error of your ways. You just cannot change that fast. The diamonds are inherently bad people, yes, but they- like anyone else- deserve a chance to be redeemed properly. They are working on changing slowly, day by day, and you can see the progress they've made for the better. You have to remember, Yellow laughed at being alone for 6000 years, which obviously isn't very long for a diamond so 2 years couldn't be more than the blink of an eye to them and you can bet anything that Steven didn't stay for the entire time. They may have relapsed in the time he was away and reset all the progress he had made. They mourned Pink as much as anyone else, even if it was their fault, and now having her back is going to make them clingy. Blue is no longer in mourning and so she doesn't make anyone cry anymore, which is a big thing as it hindered her and her court from doing anything for 6000 years. They have flaws, they made some pretty massive mistakes but they are trying and that's all you can ask for from antagonists who have been doing what they did for millions of years.

White Diamond = Steven's Grandma Blue & Yellow Diamond = Steven's Aunts I think that seems accurate.

My opinion on the subject is, perhaps they don't deserve forgiveness. Maybe they do. It doesn't really matter. Regardless of whether you think they deserve to be forgiven or not, they're changing. Like Tom said, it's not necessarily the reason for them changing that matters, it's the fact that they're changing at all. They may not be doing it for the right reasons, but they're doing it. Take a look at Homeworld. It's changed drastically since CYM. In the end, they may or may not be deserving of forgiveness. It doesn't matter. They're genuinely making an attempt at changing their ways, and that's what we need to see.

Steven: I think it would be good to reach out to all the saviors of the species that were killed. Diamonds: Like who? Steven: Umm...

If Steven's entire focus is to be on Earth and assisting the former Crystal Gems adjust to life here, then the only business he needs to deal with concerning the Diamonds is making sure their collective attitude remains friendly towards him, and thus refrain from devastating this world. In such case, it matters nothing whether the Diamonds are "good" or "evil", only that they aren't trying to blast Earth. The rest of the universe will have to take care of itself. If his goal is to institute a complete reformation of Gem society, including halting Homeworld's imperial expansion, then he's going to have to divide his time between Earth and the cosmos, influencing the Diamonds and their instruments of power, and which may entail compromising some principles in the near term for success in the long run. Morally and practically, he can't hang around Beach City exclusively and expect currying much favor with anybody in the Gem Empire. Obviously, there are moral lines that I can't see Steven crossing...I'm sure he'll refuse to shatter a Gem execution-style, and I doubt that he'll contribute his essence for making better Gems if they're intended for the annexation and exploitation of other worlds. If Homeworld does run across a organic life-bearing world, Steven might well balk at cooperating with the Diamonds, so this could be one of the possible compromises he'd have to consider if he wants to make further gains with the Diamonds. Finally, every one of us makes a morally-compromising deal when we decide to purchase consumer electronics made in places like China, so I'd be wary of looking down on Steven when he maintains friendly relations with his "aunts", especially as this keeps Earth safe from deliberate destruction.

Can you do a video about how the Gems are a race of cosmic viruses using a crystal matrix for their bodies? I think that the gems are viruses that once had biological hosts that they controlled. But since the hosts never lasted as long as they needed, they developed crystal matrix bodies that they could project their self identities through. And with the amount of energy that they put into the gems as they develope in the kindergartens, the viruses could probably last indefinitely, especially if they can regain that energy while staying still.

Well, I didn't think they really changed due to the announcement Steven was making when White Diamond was telling Yellow Pearl to cut the feed, and how they were all talking about what they stopped doing to other gems, that was when White said "And I've been saying please and thank you to lower life forms." Then Steven had to correct her on equal life forms.

While Steven isn't obligated to help the diamonds, especially after the terrible things they've done, I do think that Steven should help the diamonds to be better people. Also, I do think that the diamonds are sorry for some of the terrible things they've done, especially when in regards to pink diamond (especially Blue Diamond). That's usually how redemption works. A person does terrible things, feels sorry for all or some of the terrible things that have been done, and try to make up for terrible things that have been done.

I don't know if Steven should take the role of a diamond. However, he should take some kind of ambassador or advisor role. If anything is going to change on homeworld (fusions, off colors, organics) then he needs to give some new directions that the diamonds aren't capable of.

You know when Steven dies(we all know he will there is not a human mind out there that can handle immortality) chances are they’re just gonna restart the empire (the diamonds have already grown bored after two years chances are they’ll fall back on the prime directive of empire building) so I honestly think it would be better if Steven truly teaches them the value of life then establish protocols for if they are gonna colonize a planet to pick one with no life on it like say random example Mercury also make sure there’s still some military chances are if there are other space-faring races at least a few will be hostile and won’t talk at all take the Starfleet approach have weapons for defense but never actively seek conflict but be better than Starfleet and continue active weapon r&d so that no technologically superior race can sneak up and destroy what remains of Homeworld

I think they need to incorporate an actual villain into the story a person that can't be redeemed with ideas perhaps an opposite Steven Now this next part is my own theory: a gem experiment perhaps a carbon or metal based gem iron pyrite or carbon quarts an opposite Steven he(yes he because he's opposite Steven and an experiment) instead of heal he can only destroy literally he would have something like whitebeards guru guru no mi(because Rebecca sugars favorite anime is one piece and she based a lot of spinels moves off of luffy) his weapon is a sword (based off lemongrabs sword) the diamonds can't effect him because he's not a gem and unlike Steven he can't fuse with any lifeform human or gem etc. He's skinny,pale, and has wavy silver hair, he is meant to be like thanos as in he has good ideas,reasons and believes what he is doing is wrong but believes he has to do it for the sake of the greater good, his ideas are similar to that of legalism,Confucianism and Taoist use because he would believe the diamonds and Steven have betrayed there roles as diamonds.

The Crystal Gems were an army of 8 soldiers. 8 Soldiers who aren’t Avengers. Trying to make peace with a Nazi Germany is fine if you’re a Poland. Not much else you can do.

I think it was nice of how it was dealt with on the Change your mind episode, since at least the diamonds are trying slowly to change to be better people because of Steven's help, since he's the reason they're starting to better to their colonies in homeworld, how things are changing for the better too

I think Steven HAS to help them change. Since they still need to find a way to support gem creation and Steven has nixed the "world destruction" path they have used for millenia (and the only way so far shown to create gems), they will need Steven to consult or they may fall back into their old ways in frustration. Speaking of gem creation, Pearl has commented that Gems are born with all their energy they will get, not infinite power. So EVENTUALLY they will die. It's been theorized that homeworld is having a power shortage (since later gems seem to have weaker powers and use enhancers) and that's why they colonize and destroy planets and were creating the gem shard experiments. So now that they are no longer colonizing/creating new gems and gem fashion actually subtracts from their overall population number (creating 1 from 2+ gems) how WILL they sustain their numbers? Have they just all accepted an eventual extintion? Are they still colonizing only uninhabited planets? Or is there a third (unheard of) way to create new gems?

Change Your Mind _was_ the point where everything went haywire with the story, and it _wasn't_ because the diamonds shouldn't have been redeemed... it was because they were redeemed _WAY TOO QUICKLY._ I am so sick and tired of seeing this issue framed as either "the diamonds should've been straight up evil and should never have been redeemed ever!" or "Steven Universe is fine the way it is and y'all are just salty that your headcanon didn't come true." the diamonds being redeemed is not necessarily an issue. the fact that White Diamond herself had like, one appearance before her redemption scene is a _HUGE_ issue. and yeah, I am a little disappointed that a lot of the diamonds' villainous clout seems to have been squandered! I think that the diamonds are an area where Steven Universe could've really gone ham on the villainous panache! god, like, just the wasted aesthetic potential with White Diamond alone has me grinding my teeth... that character had such good bones for villainy! she gave off the same vibe as the other mother from Coraline, like, the show could've really leaned into that and made her a big threat! _she didn't even get a creepy villain song. do you understand how cool that could've been?? she could've possessed a whole room and turned them into a CHOIR for god's sake!!! that could've been THE MOST EPIC SHIT EVER._ I friggin LOVE a good villain, okay? they up the tension in the plot by giving the characters a lot to do. a framework in which to express their values as they oppose the values of someone they disagree with. and because Steven Universe is so concerned with redeeming antagonists, having a really challenging antagonist is the show's _bread and butter._ this is what the show is _for._ I wanted Steven Universe to spend a decent amount of time with these heroes, and these villains, and the messy, difficult struggle to come to some sort of understanding. like, I've mentioned this in other comments on roundtable videos, but I personally would've loved it if Steven had only managed to redeem Blue at first. that would create a schism in homeworld's leadership, with the diamonds split, two and two. Pink and Blue would be advocating for more freedom of expression for the common gem, while Yellow and White would be intent on maintaining homeworld's strict policy of conformity. and Steven Universe is in the unique position of being able to pull that off in a medium aimed at kids. it could show how this complexity manifests in an easily understood narrative. and there would be so many stories to explore within the resulting situation! they could've explored what it would mean for a gem to "defect" from White and Yellow's side in order to join Pink and Blue. they could've shown Blue still having doubts about the side she's chosen, because she had spent so long operating as homeworld expected her to. they could've focused on how Blue is going through character development and getting closer to the people around her, while Yellow is becoming stagnant in her thinking, and White is as aloof and detached as she's ever been... they aren't united by anything more than a shared ideology. they even could've put emphasis on the fact that Steven is trying to change a society that has remained unchanged for a long time. change takes time, and change takes work, and Steven is willing to do it, but it is hard. he may have the ear of one diamond, but she became a rebel the moment she decided to step out of line, because the backbone of the system is a higher power than even her. and ultimately, affecting societal change might have to happen from the bottom up, rather than the top down. because the truth of the matter is, whether you're the highest of the high, or the lowest of the low, we are all equally thinking, feeling people, and that needs to be recognized. and if the leaders won't look down, then sometimes you do have to get their attention in an aggressive sort of way. sometimes you have to force them to see the people they should be empathizing with. anytime you have the basis for a good struggle like this, you will have tons and _tons_ of good material with which to create an interesting plot. _why throw that away??????_

Change Your Mind is when Blue and Yellow begin wanting to change because they were miserable enforcing Homeworld ways. Blue realized she hurt Pink, Yellow realized she was unhappy, White realizes even she isn't perfect after finding she was off color. They each had a very meaty personal motivation to change outside of wanting to be close to Steven.
