Nothing can salvage this Titanic but a Cup win and Marner winning the Conn Smythe. There’s a better chance of the actual Titanic uncrumpling off the ocean floor, floating back to the surface intact, firing up its engines and cruising into New York harbor full steam ahead.

Part of the reason Hyman's numbers look so good now is because he's on a line with the most offensively-talented player in the world, and on the powerplay with arguably the two most offensively-talented players in the world. His production wouldn't have been the same in Toronto.

Players have a short career. Players negotiate a contract and are expected to fulfill the contract. Marner has a contract with a NMC and it is not selfish for him to hold to the contract terms. The Leafs had the ability to trade him when his contract allowed them to do it without his consent. Marner is living up to his contract and expects the Leafs to do the same. Knowing the Leafs are desperate to unload Marner every GM will expect to pay very little for a player they can sign for free the following year.

Losing Hyman, at the time, wasn't like losing Matthews. Hyman's track record in the playoffs with the Leafs was 1 goal in each of the series they played. Now, he didn't get Power Play time, but he did play with Matthews and Marner. Playing on the Oilers power play was a godsend for Hyman because you could have put any big body there with good hands and they would have probably contributed in a similar manner. Not saying he hasn't scored some great goals, but a bail of hay in front of the net will get points on the Oiler PP. Hindsight is perfect, as always, and while I know that Hyman is a good player, I doubt that his performance with the Leafs would have been a mirror image of his performance with the Oilers.

He was 29 at the time of signing and the deal is nearly half over. These first 3 years (27 goals, 36 goals, 54 goals, 29 playoff goals) in conjunction with the cap going up (resulting in the percentage of the cap this contract takes up going down) have made the contract worth it already, even with 4 years left barring a really sharp decline.
@alanpaul9481
@alanpaul9481 3 месяца назад
You forgot to mention that Dubas also, out of spite, didn't even accept a draft pick back from the Oilers to add a year to the deal. This didn't keep Hyman a Leaf. It doesn't benefit the Leafs, who can't see the Oilers unless in a cup final. It also told all current and potential players that the Leafs will hold a grudge, and will take money from the player if it is possible for them to do so. A lot of spite towards a player everybody seems to love. Might not have gone over well in the Leafs room either.

Unpopular opinion but what if the Leaf's just re-sign Marner and then just tank for 1-2 seasons to bolster their D. you leave the forward core (which is great in my opinion). Tavares comes off the books or re-signes for a lower AAV and you have the freedom to add to the team after that point. Another thing to note is that the Leaf's are in a division that has had 7 teams make it to the finals in the last 6 years. it's easily the toughest division so maybe waiting would reduce the stress from the division.

And by the way McDavid was invisible for most of the FLA series as well. Florida had two garbage games but when they played their best McDavid was totally ineffective and Marner-like in his impact. I watched the games he had almost no impact on the outcome in games 1-3 or final games where the outcome actually mattered. When the series was on the line the Oilers offense was non existent. Kind of what the Leafs have to deal with every year when they play against elite playoff defensive teams. Oilers had no business winning this series but Florida took their foot off the gas. They were outscored 11-4 games 1-3 where the series was decided. I was not surprised at all FLA won game 7. They just had to play their A game.

*sigh* let's put this to the rest, Toronto fans... and this is coming from an outside perspective to three different clubs that will be mentioned... and for two different players. It would have changed *NOTHING* had you kept Hyman in Toronto. He didn't magically turn into a frickin gem as soon as he went out the door. Playing with McDavid will make ANY player look better than he actually is. Not saying Hyman is a bad player, far from it. But, oh dear Toronto fans, you want me to pull another name? Tuukka FRIGGIN Rask. You see that guy as such a mistake of a trade given how he's performed in Boston. We're talking here about the single most overrated goaltender of the cap era, BTW. His best days in Boston was when the Bruins were a defensive juggernaut on the blue line; ANY goaltender would have pulled it off by then. Had Rask stayed in Toronto, it wouldn't have changed a thing either! So with that said, let me reassure you in a sense: the day Marner gets traded and becomes a world beater elsewhere in the league, don't even DARE treat it as a mistake. It is what it is.

Both the Oilers and Panthers will lose players to free agency this summer because of the cap. I think we have a Bettman curse. As long as he is involved with the NHL a Canadian team won't win a cup. @@Hockeyhobo89 Ummm a ton of people were upset Hyman left. And probably half the Leafs fanbase thought Dubas was nuts at the time

At the time I wanted to sign him. He was heart and sole. I knew the risks of his age and some injury stuff but he was mr fix it. His versatility was undeniable. He’s exactly what we needed when he was here. But that being said. NO ONE saw this coming. Guy has been beyond anything anyone predicted and it couldn’t happen to a better guy

Paraphrasing what Jason Strudwick said in an episode of Overdrive when asked if anyone ever thought Hyman would be a 50 goal scorer: "I guarantee you Kyle Dubas didn't!" 🤣

Had they not overpaid for Tavares, then Marner and Mathews, the Leafs could have kept Hyman and should have kept Kadri. You have to wonder how this team would have looked under Lou if Dumbass wasn’t promoted.

The Leafs should have kept Carter "Clutch" Verhaeghe Dubas made some awful trades. Giving away Seth Jarvis for nothing well taking over a horrible contract.

It looks bad now, but that Habs series was brutal. The hooking, holding, and slashing on Matthews and Marner was brutal, and it was Hyman’s time to step up. He had countless 1 on 1s/ breakaways and did not do the business. He had to walk

Hell yeah, they did!! They got rid of all their sand paper and kept tje cottonelle! He was your Brandon Gallagher, only better and just let him walk. Ouch!
