It’s possible, although I believe the FA wanted to keep him. If he did manage the USA he would have zero pressure from anyone in the federation, so maybe that mystery would be solved.
@@TheAmazingBlizzzair Southgate is continued purgatory. please get me out of here. He is cautious because he is not tactically confident. do we want a leader who is held back by fear of criticism?
He will be an okay coach at best, has done absolutely nothing of his own merit, with some crazy decisions. Anyone happy with this because of results hasn’t watched England.
If he wants a job where he’ll be appreciated then the US job is a good option for him. He’d be a huge upgrade on Berhalter who tried to play club football which was never going to work as he didn’t have the players. The US needs to stop playing like its got something to prove and the pragmatic style he’ll use is better suited to a team like the US which has lower expectations and less quality players to pick from. They should be playing like France and England did.
The US should be going all out for him. His pragmatic defensive style might not be exciting to watch, but he’ll make the US a lot tougher to break down, playing counter attacking football. You might not have much quality, but you’ve got plenty of young athletic players who will be dangerous on the break. Success is relative and if he gets the team to the last 32/16 he’ll have done well. As the host nation you can’t afford to not get past the group stages two tournaments in a row.
The Crocker - Southgate English connection makes me nervous. But at the end of the day, I think he's too much of a gentleman to get results in Confacaf/Conembol. You need someone who knows all the dark arts and gamesmanship. I remember that Colombia gave England a really hard time, totally through them off their game with tactical fouls a couple of World cups ago.
Gregg Experience: Assistant in Bundesliga, head coach Swedish 2nd division (not promoted), head coach Columbus crew. Southgate: head coach of Middlesbrough (took over right after they were in UEFA Cup) 3years later…. Relegated, head coach U-21 England, head coach England. World Cup Semifinals and Euro runner-up. Better than Gregg, yes. He had so much talent with England. I don’t think England reached their potential. Not excited about Southgate but realistically ok with it.
I’m not so sure he’s going to want jump right back into the fray so soon. Frankly, the expectations of most Americans are almost as unrealistic of those of English fans. He might actually the best qualified US manager - ever, but I’d be surprised if he said yes.
There is a big difference in managing major world tournament football vs club football. We need a manager who knows how to win major football tournaments but at the minimum finished in the final of major football tournaments regardless of where he has managed. Southgate has takin England to back-to-back Euros finals and a World Cup semi. I don't thing Southgate ig Gregg.
Thank you so much for the super thanks! We’ve heard that Pochettino wants to stay in Europe at the highest level, but the interest from USSF is real. As for de la Fuente, that would be an amazing hire but honestly we think he’s just using this as leverage to get more money from Spain.
Why exactly? You don’t have too many quality players, but you do have young athletic players who’ll run all day. He’ll make you tougher to break down and playing counter attacking football. He’s got loads of experience and should get you to the last 32, maybe 16.
@@1972dsrai that's the problem. Our teams have been to 32 and 16 multiple times in the past with worst players. Now that we have better players we want to take a chance on someone who could potentially get us further (even Morocco got 4th last time).
Also i think the optics are kinda bad. Many of us had been hoping for a new coach for years. Then, in the world cup, we watched Southgate actually get outcoached by the guy we wanted to leave 🤷🏾♂️.
I don't think its a horrible hire. Most coaches can only do so much with USA talent. They need to fix the youth soccer, high school, college and MLS. Then we will have a chance.
Not a bad shout, but will he want to move into international football? He’s still quite young and if he failed to get the US past the group stages his stock would take a huge hit. Alternatively, if he does well and gets you to the last 16 it will be seen as a success. As hosts you can’t afford to flop again after the Copa debacle.
I want to add a serious negative. Dual national recruiting. Southgate is the reason England doesn't have Musiala, a potential World Class talent. Germany will likely be World Cup contenders for 15-20 years at least, and Musiala is one of the biggest reasons why. Generational talent potential. On top of this, England lost Tomori to Italy, and possibly to Canada, and Musah and Balogun to the US. I'm very worried on that front. Also, his only club job, he got relegated. That has to be said.
Please NO on Southgate. And thank you for pointing out the path England took in Euros and in WC… you can only play the teams you’re scheduled to play but they had easy paths to the finals and semifinals respectively. Their game against Slovakia this Euro felt exactly like our miracle bailout against Jamaica in the 90th minute. To me, biggest issue with Southgate is he has a TON of talent to work with, but didn’t seem to make full use of it. Out talent pool is much weaker, so we absolutely NEED a coach who will get the most out of the talent we have… that’s not Southgate. Southgate is GGG 2.0 with a British accent. No thank you.
Let’s be honest, who do we think we are? We should be happy if he’s appointed, he’s a proven coach, not the sexy name we want but he gets results. The USMNT head coach job is not that attractive for foreigners, we can’t fill stadiums, have an okay squad at best, can’t splash the cash paying too much above market price, dead federation that has had a lot of turmoil, whiny players, and play in the most boring region in the world. We are deluded and think it’s attractive but it isn’t
