Why Doesn't Monaco Have A National Football Team?

Monaco is a sovereign city-state with almost 40,000 residents, a 16,000 seater football stadium, and a football team - AS Monaco - who have won eight Ligue 1 titles and reached the 2004 UEFA Champions League final.
There's just one thing missing - a FIFA and UEFA affiliated national football team.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at why that is the case, what makes Monaco unique within international football, and whether it's likely to change anytime soon.

Winning the CL with Vaduz on Football Manager is the final boss of challenges, you have to win the Conference League to get in the Europa League, then win that the next season when you are in it, then win the Champions League in that next year too. Great vid Alfie, now fancy doing one about Jersey/Guernsey? Both have attempted multiple times to ascend to full FIFA recognition, both have failed. For interesting reasons…
@exsandgrounder
@exsandgrounder 11 дней назад
Yes, and like Monaco, they have club sides that compete "abroad" (in England of course), although given they're not as good as Monaco they have less to lose. I'm a Guernsey resident and I think there would be sufficient national pride to support FIFA accession, plus there is sufficient local base to form a national team. Meanwhile, there is the Island Games and Muratti Vase that "national" teams from both islands compete in. There has been some talent from the islands too, with Graeme le Saux (Jersey) and Matt le Tissier (Guernsey), and Alex Scott of Guernsey is now a Premier League player. According to Wikipedia, Jersey's FA was considering accession to CONCACAF last year in a quote from the Greenland manager.

I don't get why Alfie believes AS Monaco couldn't play European matches. It's not like Swansea was barred from the Europa League after winning the League Cup a decade ago. FC Vaduz is special as the Swiss consider them a 'guest club' and won't allow them in the Swiss cup. That's not the case for AS Monaco, Victor San Marino, or the Welsh clubs in the English league system.
@kieranfogarty778

It's because FC Vaduz are members of the Liechtenstein FA, not the Swiss FA. Swansea are members of the English FA, not the Welsh FA, therefore on paper they're seen as an English club. Same for Monaco being classed as French and Victor San Marino as Italian.
@TylerAven10

@@TylerAven10 I doubt UEFA would allow the Monegasque FA to become official if there wasn't a club representative competing under it then. To me there's no point anyway. They were in the past treated as Welsh, as there was no.league of Wales. Cardiff, Wrexham and Swansea were in Europe a lot until 30 years ago.
@OutdatedBeverage
@OutdatedBeverage 11 дней назад
@@gvogas I believe but I could be wrong, that UEFA essentially told the 4 big Welsh clubs that if they continued to compete in the Welsh cup they would have to become full members of the FAW and be classified as a “guest” in England and that would mean their only route (like Vaduz) to enter European competition would now be through the Welsh cup. So now as you say they are de jure English clubs but de facto Welsh. But I think the comparison stands because it’s precisely what the Welsh clubs (which operate more akin to how Monaco does today) would have been faced with.

Did you notice, in Monaco's results, a 0-10 defeat to Ellan Vannin? Did you think "who are Ellan Vannin?"? I'll explain. Ellan Vannin is the name given to the team put out by the Manx International Football Association. MIFA is a ConIFA member, but not affiliated with the Isle of Man FA. The IOMFA acts as a County FA under the FA. MIFA and the IOMFA have an agreement under which any players playing on the Isle of Man are eligible to represent Ellan Vannin, therefore making the Ellan Vannin team a _de facto_ Isle of Man Football League representative side, although not the official IOMFL representative side that competes in the FA Inter-League Cup and has represented England in the UEFA Regions' Cup twice (2007 and 2015).

Football is often used as a means to escape poverty... Jokes aside, i think it gets complicated in a country that effectively allows you to become a citizen by payment and/or sheer will of its governor. Potentially the Prince of Monaco could put together an entirely foreign squad before the round of next call ups by just handing out passports to every talented 18yo or uncapped "slow burner" in the world immediately establishing themselves way above their weightclass. A Monaco national team could actually result in the development of more Monégasque footballers, but the French FA likely wouldn’t let them do it even if they wanted to. Also they could still support AS Monaco as a club team on the side if UEFA theoretically granted them an exception from having to need a league.

Maybe it's because the majority of Monaco residents weren't born there and don't even live there really they just register their Monaco home as their primary address to avoid taxes 😂

As a counterpoint to Monaco's difficulty qualifying for the champions league: The concacaf champions league now allows Canadian teams to qualify through the MLS as well as the Canadian cup. Of course, Concacaf and EUFA are different organizations, but I think they could figure it out. Especially given that the financial incentives seem to align, and that's really all that matters right?

Vaduz could technically play champions league football, but they’d need to win the europa conference league AND europa league in back to back seasons in order to qualify

A semi-example of Forchério in San Marino: Massimo Bonini was a Sanmarinese defensive midfielder who was a regular for Juve in the 80's (winning EC I), but did not play for Italy despite the fact there was no San Marino national team until the 90's. In the autumn of his career he played a few games in the beginning years of the San Marino national team.

Haha, a really nice elaboration on what everyone first thinks seeing the question in the title: Why Doesn't Monaco Have A National Football Team? - Because there is practically no such thing as "a nation of Monaco" to represent. In theory - yes. In reality - no. (I was a bit surprised to learn Monaco has a national Olympic Committee and does compete in the Olympics though - I guess individual sports are a bit of a different case than team sports...)

I've always wondered where AS Monaco draw their support from? Does it come from the small native Monégasque population? Do people from the areas of France surrounding Monaco look towards AS Monaco as their local team? I know attendances are not high for a club of their success level, but of those who do support them, who are they?
@tayloryoung9803
@tayloryoung9803 10 дней назад
Yes many places around support Monaco, but similarly its an old population most often. However across France it is fairly supported club and in away games they always draw sizable crowds for them
@guessundheit6494
@guessundheit6494 8 дней назад
The unwillingness to compete in FIFA or UEFA only applies to team sports because of the money and population required. Nobody in Monaco objects to celebrating Charles Leclerc as their native rich boy winner. Individual sports can occasionally produce champions from countries normally viewed as "minnows", as seen in the olympics. In 2024, Julien Alfred won gold and silver for Saint Lucia (pop. 180,000), her country's first ever medals. Letsile Tebogo won gold and silver for Botswana (pop. 2.4 million), only the 3rd and 4th medals ever won by that country. Marc Girardelli won two silvers in skiing for Luxembourg (pop. 670,000) in 1992; previous to that one 1500m gold in 1952 and nothing else since the 1920s. The biggest overachievers were Hanni Wenzel (2G, 1S, 1B) and her younger brother Andreas Wenzel (1S, 1B) for Liechtenstein (pop. 40,000), six of the country's ten medals (all from skiing).

4:45 what's selfish about wanting to keep more of your own money? Isn't it far more selfish to demand other people give you their money? And how did the societies they came from "make" them as opposed to them making themselves? How else did they "make" themselves if not by fairly providing a product or service that their society first wanted anyways?
