Actually cats did just that. For example wild felines meow only when they are small, adult ones do not make this sound. Cats evolved to be cute to humans so we would keep them around, feed and protect.

Mouser farm cats are still up and about on farms with pest control keeping the rodents away, and just having one around keeps a lot of the rats and mice away even.

I agree but how do we know which species are vital and which are not? The wolf reintroduction to Yellowstone is a perfect example. No one knew that removing them would alter streams and change the number and species of trees. It was only after many decades that we saw how important they were. We were lucky that there are enough wolves for reintroduction to happen. Sadly, there are not enough pandas for this type of long term experiment. So while their numbers are low and natural reproduction rates even lower, we should at least try to understand their roles before giving up entirely.

@@cggc9510 While we may make mistakes, scientists generally have a decent working knowledge of which are keystone species and which are not, so yes, you're right, caution is important; however, I think that we need to be more ruthless in our decisions with the best knowledge that we have at our disposal.

If we want to save giant pandas we have to do it smarter. Rather than wasting billions of dollars down the drain just to preserve the bears themselves we should instead shift towards the ecosystem of Bamboo forests. Bamboo has a phenom called Bamboo blossom where nearly entire bamboo forest flowers at the same time then they all die off at once because most bamboo grows from a single specimen meaning most bamboo in a forest is a clone of the original bamboo which can be bad for genetic diversity. When the Bamboo flower they produce tons of seeds which most will be eaten by rats, the problem occurs is that rat population often swell to overwhelming numbers that very few seeds survive to grow. When the bamboo seeds run out then the rats either die out or move on to nearby farms to feed on the agriculture.This cause a very small number of genetic variety in the surviving bamboo. Coupled with humans enproaching on the bamboo forstes and chopping them down to make room for more farms. We should start on preserving and introducing native rodent eating carnivores that help keep rat numbers down during these Bamboo bloom events, this means more cultivars of bamboo will survive. Then we introduce Bamboo species that don't go through these mass blooming so that herbivorous species including Giant Pandas have something to eat during the Bamboo Blooming.

I think we should focus on saving the organisms most vital to the ecosystem. Pandas seem like a lost cause. They mostly put themselves at risk of extinction without the help of us; they often abandon their young, and for some stupid reason, they decide to have a very limited diet of bamboo despite being bears with adaptations for eating meat. Bamboo is utterly an inappropriate diet for their digestive system. I dunno why some panda long ago had the brilliant idea to eat almost nothing but bamboo. This is one of the few animals where their imminent extinction is, for the most part, not human's fault. So why not let natural selection take it's course?

Miles Wright It's hard to accept an animal that is simply not optimized for survival. I think that panda's should be kept as domestic pets for the wealthy. Thus, we have a way to keep panda's alive without being a burden upon conversationalist groups trying to keep the entire environment alive.

Couch ! True, that is hard to accept. Like the cheetah, for instance, is one of my favorite animals so I have a bias in wanting to conserve that species. Like the panda, humans have negatively impacted their numbers. But like the panda, it seems if humans weren't a factor, they would still be headed for extinction. Cheetahs seem to have the worst luck. For unclear reasons, their genome seems to indicate that they went through a severe population bottleneck around 10,000 years ago. So they're severely inbreed with low genetic diversity. They are the pushovers of the Savannah; 50% of their predatory chases are successful, the highest success rate of any predator, but the majority of their kills get stolen by lions, hyenas and leopards. Because cheetahs can't fight. They're so adapted for speed that they are very light weight with low muscle. They're simply being out-competed by other predators.

Miles Wright Not exactly true. Humans were the cause of them moving towards extinction. Of course, if you meant if we suddenly disappeared, they'd still be going extinct, I would say you are correct. They adapted to their restrictive life cycle, such that they can't go back, and yet can't do much with it. It's kinda sad, all considered.

Ignoring pandas for a while may ironically help them, a genetic bottleneck is exactly what pandas need. Their picky eating and breeding is why they're nearly extinct, and trying to save them liberates them from suffering from their own flaws which means that less picky individuals who could make the species viable again don't enjoy the benefits of natural selection.

I think animals that are very near extinction should be conserved in captivity only, with no efforts to reintroduce them to the wild unless there is a good chance they can successfully repopulate. As well, animals with a low chance of success should be saved in a gene bank instead of as physical animals. If we preserve good quality gene samples, and lots of them, we can very likely clone a new generation of the species later. I think animals important to the ecosystem should be top priority with animals with a good chance of recovery given second priority. The "cute" or exotic faces of wildlife conservation should still be used as the face of wildlife conservation. They can act as funds for the other animals, so yes we should still try to save them, but distribute the money a little better.

But when turned 13 I started thinking more rational (like probably everyone else) and at that age I didn't think about pandas but if i asked him about it he would probably say "yeah, let them die. That is actually pretty interesting. But I feel like it's more of a "Unintended Casualties" than a "Dolphins are cuter than Tuna" we hunt tuna for food. We don't hunt Dolphins because it's a bad species to farm given the rate of reproduction and the amount of offspring per birth. Though I also realize that some tuna are becoming endangered, so your Quoted argument does have some great validity. (I realize this comment is over nine months old, I just wanted to add my completely unneeded two cents)

Agreed. Pandas are cute and I don't want them to die out anymore then their diehard fans do but Humanity doesn't have the resources and time to save EVERY plant and animal species on Earth. We have to make tough choices which requires us to let some non-essential species die out to save ones that're essential to their ecosystems and can rebound once freed from whatever endangers them.

Bees are an invasive species. They are driving other pollinators to near extinction. If we let them die in North America we would have better habitats. They take up space that other pollinators we use for their habitats. Those pollinators could definitely pick up the slack if Honey Bees would just BUZZ OFF!

Yea they play a big role in our environment, but it was pur actions that did that. He used weed killers and other items, and basically kill bees. Our poaching of white rhinos are making them extinct. No animal should become extinct, but the way we are heading, soon th ed human population will die. Pesticides, poaching, wars, forest fires, pollution, global warming, all of these action were caused by us. We are the main reason most animals are dieing. Before humans came, earth was way better. This might be our only home, and the way we are treating it doesnt show we care enough. So maybe let's now let animals go extinct, let us change the world and have it become a great world, with world peace.

Breed pandas to sell as pets. A pet panda market would make tons of money, and they'd be all over the place. They already have to be pampered by humans to survive, and they are generally not aggressive. They'd make perfect pets, and people would pay good money to take care of them without charitable support. Then we could focus our charity donations on saving more important and/or less costly species.

It took less than 50 years to domesticate the silver fox in Russia -and that was without the benefit of genetic manipulation or cloning to help them along. +Paul Bauman Bee's are INFINITLEY more vital to the ecosystem then pandas. For one, bees pollinate most plans. That jelly? Wouldn't exsist without bees. Quite litterally, almost everything in your kitchen needs bees. Name one thing in the world that ABSOLUTELY requires pandas to function. Secondly, panda's were probably on the way out anyway, regardless of human interferrence. They spend most of their day eating a food they're not ment to eat and can't digest taht's low in calories, vitamins and nutrients. Then when they're done eating they refuse sex like a priest.

I can’t believe we are spending billions of dollars on a specie that: 1. Die of starvation for eating something that isn’t supposed to eat and don’t eat things that it could 2. Can only reproduce for 2-3 days per year and still abandon their cub if they have more than one 3. Can’t even hibernate because if they stop eating (something that they shouldn’t be eating in the first place) they die of starvation 4. Even if they have only one cub, it’s extremely probable that the cub is gonna die crushed accidentally by his mother. Some animals kill their cubs for many reasons, but this is the only animal that is SO stupid to kill his only responsability in his entire life by accident In conclusion, we are throwing cash to the trash trying to save an animal that ask to be extinct for its stupidity for the only reason that they are cute. We spend so much resources helping pandas, because we have formed a symbiotic relationship with them. This can best be modeled from an economical perspective. There are many resources derived from cows, so we trade with them. We provide protection from predictors and food and they provide leather and beef. Similarly, we give protection and food to pandas in exchange for their product; cuteness. Cuteness is a type of entertainment, and entertainment is one of the biggest markets in industrialized nations. The same reason is why dogs, cats, and fish are kept as pets.

you know, in the conservation biology there is two concepts, umbrella species and flagship species. Pandas are both of them, protecting them could not only conserves species those live in the same habitat, but also attracts widespread attention. The choose of umbrella species is not entirely depended on their importance in biology, and it is also the reason why pandas are the symbol of WWF. By the way, the endangering of pandas is almost because of the destroy of their habitats from human beings, and if we give up protecting them they could still be alive.

if you drink coffee, you're drinking the juice of a coffee fruit, that's right, coffee is a fruit, and bees pollinate it. if bees go extinct, say goodbye to your morning drink and other fruits and veggies that we eat, say goodbye to that, if bees go extinct, we would loose dairy products, we would be eating corn, wheat, and rice, that's how important bees are, and fruit is both good for us, and tastes good, but we do know as a matter of fact that trees with pinecones, they are called conifers, and reproduces with wind pollination, male cones produce pollen (they don't fall out of the trees) and females (they do fall down but they need pollen to make seeds, they might fall early)

I did some research and I saw a lot of articles about this topic.... One thing pandas do is that they play a crucial role in China's bamboo forests by spreading seeds and helping the vegetation to grow. So by saving pandas, we will also be saving so much more.

Bamboo isn't exactly super useful..There also isn't many pandas anyways so I don't see how they're making such a big impact?? Either way we aren't "saving" pandas..just babying them and carrying them. They aren't walking on their own, we're carrying them on our shoulders. They're basically goners might as well let 'em go or selectively breed them so they can actually survive.

I don't know what you're talking about, a lot of people don't care about looks! I fell in love with my partner just on the fact we get along well and he's been there for me through thick and thin. I only fell in love with his looks like a year after crushing on him and a few weeks after fully falling for him.
