NASA's plans to go back to the Moon and eventually Mars have been expedited by President Donald Trump. But how long until people are permanently living on Mars, and how will we convince them to go there?
In this episode of "America From Scratch" we explore the ways the government could motivate people to move to Mars and we draw comparisons to when settlers were incentivized to move out West. NASA tells us about their Moon to Mars mission, and why its important for us to become a multi-planet species. Should we pay people to move to mars?

the real question is: should we still be divided into nations when we as humanity decide to colonize space?

Personally I don't think it would matter for we are still and will always be at our core a tribal people. There are those that are not in any way. A huge group that like to think they are but would freak out with out their tribe. And I don't think it is a bad thing. It can become bad because history and current events show us that all over the place. But in the end it would be far easier to get people to the closest stars then end human tribalism. Also far more productive over all. Since once we get to space we will just become tribal again, but by system and colony then by 'Nations' as we understand them today.
@ShawnRavenfire
@ShawnRavenfire 5 лет назад
I would think that a Mars colony would be an independent nation. It would be too far physically removed from any Earth nation to govern efficiently. Even on Mars, we probably wouldn't want a single colony. We'd want to space them out for maximum chance of success, and since travel between colonies would be difficult, each colony would have to be mostly autonomous. Sure, we could call them united in name only, but in function, they would be independent from each other.
@williamjanak2013
@williamjanak2013 5 лет назад
@@ShawnRavenfire I would agree that Mars would become its own Nation/tribe. The core of my post was about trying to get an united species is next to worthless because, like you said we would just brake up again in to different nations/people/tribes.

Makes me wonder if we ever find life on another planet. Would we be invading the land of others like the europeans did hundreds of years ago? Also, Mars should not be split into nations if we "colonize" it.

America From Scratch Hard to say. In that case life may not be sentient, which allows us to think of that life as sub-human. However, if we run into something that is sentient, we may project ourselves on to them giving them the same status as humans. Honestly, I think humans come first, but the universe may think differently.

It does seem a bit off-topic to consider large-scale relocation to another planet (or the moon) when there are so many issues still to address here at home. I like the idea of small-scale exploration and short-term habitation, but huge terraforming efforts and leaps in agricultural and enviro science will need to occur before we can realistically consider habitation on Mars. Of course, the Biosphere experiments in the last century had some pretty cool ideas, so maybe we are further along than I thought.
@1DangerMouse1

Technology requires energy. We're so dependent on fossil fuels and I've read that cheap peak oil could be a serious issue relatively soon. Fracking as a decent source of oil has apparently been kind of a con job (the book Saudi America cover it). Once we are forced to move away from oil and coal, I wonder how much that will slow down technological innovation (due to economic problems and reduced ability to build stuff). Nuclear energy has been stigmatized, but setting up a nuclear energy infrastructure might be crucial if we hope to buy more time to continue being a complex society capable of the sort of technological innovation needed to travel to places like Mars.

Robert Earhart dude, you don’t think efforts put into Martian terraformation could help us here on earth? There could be so many possible benefits to going to mars but because we got problems here means we shouldn’t go for the effort? We should focus on both and maybe they could help us understand and better handle the 2 sides

I suppose if you could terraform Mars any state the Earth got into might look easy by comparison... if it got that bad, maybe we could undo it still?
@DanteYewToob
@DanteYewToob 4 года назад
You don't think terraforming efforts could also help earth? We've already made huge leaps in plant growth, hydroponic plant growth, growing food without soil... etc. That could help many nations with growing food. We've developed highly efficient water purification systems, and water reclamation technologies that could provide clean potable water to dozens of nations that desperately need clean water! Trickle down science is incredibly important to the welfare of our world! Think of how many things you have in your home around you right now that started as NASA projects or space related inventions! It's absolutely worth the effort, for everyone's sake!

I just wonder how "sustainable" colonizing Mars would be. After your supplies designed and produced on earth break down over time, then you're done. I mean, humans would still be earth dependent. Also, energy is a crucial consideration here. Once humans reach peak cheap oil (some argue we already have), I'm not sure how likely it is that we would be going to Mars anyway. My understanding is that fracking has been overrated. We should look into nuclear energy and figure out how to live a more sustainable life on earth first... If we end up forced into a steady-state economy (rather than a growth-focused economy), then we probably won't have a complex enough society to do much space travel anymore anyway.
@ipomoea3067
@ipomoea3067 4 года назад
My main concern with any sort of effort to colonize Mars would be that the demographics of the settlers would be skewed towards able-bodied (because astronauts are required to exercise multiple times a day to offset the effects of being in space), affluent (if private companies are involved), and otherwise not truly representative of humanity (because discrimination in hiring/choosing potential settlers) until a) it takes significantly less time to get there and b) the habitats are secure/safe/large enough and technology advanced enough to allow people on Mars to live more or less as they would on Earth. That leaves a window of time decades or possibly centuries wide wherein, if Earth were to become unlivable for humans (a real possibility due to climate change), several marginalized groups of people would basically be left behind to die. I get that any portion of humanity surviving such an event would be good (for the survival of our species, at the least), but that just smacks of eugenics to me. It makes me wary of the long-term goals of anyone advocating for the colonization of Mars.

@princesswavesanddiamondshi2277
Maybe at first, but as things evolve there, money becomes very relevant. Businesses are worried about the bottom line and they are not going to invest in any long term colonization without expecting a profit from it. Ergo, they will be paying the people who are engaged in their business there, as well as the contractors they bring. An economy will inevitably develop.

Honestly... they need me. People like me. I've always been very fit, active and healthy. I've always had a keen interest in learning and education, and have a vast understanding of random sciences and random knowledge. On catch... I'm dying. Cancer. I have nothing to lose. I'd ABSOLUTELY go to Mars on a one way ticket. I'd happily give my life for the betterment of science and exploration of a new world. I'd work and study and then die when I couldn't any more. Beats the hell out of my current life, watching TV, studying, training, sleeping, TV, studying, training, sleeping... etc. Right now I just kinda do nothing but learn, and workout and teach the occasional class when I feel well. If they could find a group of people like me, who have nothing to lose but a passion for science, that would be perfect. Send me up with a huge supply of anime and sitcom DVDs and I'll work for free. Lmao I'll happily plant potatoes, collect rocks, build settlements... whatever. Then watch ash ketchum catch em' all at "night". . Sounds like an absolute dream! :D

Whatever it takes to get to Mars is worth it for the simple facts that building materials like iron are plentiful, the environment can be made locally habitable more easily than other places like the Moon, and the gravity is such that a space elevator could be constructed we current technology. If we go to Mars to stay, we can go everywhere else. Mars is the escape from our gravity well, and can even allow us to easily harvest the solar system to support the population of Earth. Mars is the first step toward space-faring post-scarcity.

i wonder if humanity is every gonna start just moving back and forth between mars and earth. We destroy one planet or overcrowd it, or a big meteor wrecks it, and we move to the other planet to let the first one heal and nature take over again, then in a few thousand years we move back when we wrecked the second planet.
@krisray9
@krisray9 5 лет назад
Humans as a race permanently inhabiting anywhere other than earth would be as far away from 'natural' as can be. Veering away from said natural course of life has now landed us into a lot of trouble, including the highly polluted state of the earth. It will be extremely selfish of us if we were to live here and exploit it till the point it is liveable, exploitable and go colonise another just because we can, notwithstanding what we would do for the fate of the millions of our co-inhabiting species. It's like not feeling the responsibility of fixing our wrongs and trying to revert earth to a near pristine state but having many options, ways out of doing it. From the statements of the nasa personnel based off of his fascination with humans colonising one planet after another, i feel like mission drivers are actually reading (or perhaps being made to read) fantastic science fiction to fuel their drive. It'd make me uneasy if space scientists or any scientist were to base their visions on science fiction; there are so many with unethical storylines.

That's stupid, we will eventually destroy earth no matter what. That's why we must spread off of it. The good news is once earth is uninhabitable we can break it up and use the iron in it's core and it's other resources to build giant space colonies, ships, Dyson spheres etc. We don't need earth, we need to become space faring! Then the whole universe becomes our home!

I'm all for space colonization. As our population continues to grow, we can't limit ourselves to one planet. Plus, we don't want to risk the entire species being wiped out by an asteroid or something. However, there's no real rush right now. Let's say that in a hundred years or so, we'll have better technology that could make a Mars colony a lot less risky. When we went to the moon, we had a time limit (getting there before the Soviets), but with Mars, we have the luxury to take our time and plan more carefully. Something to consider.

Hell, why go to all the bother? Just start constructing O'Niell cylinders - no need to worry about possibly contaminating Mars with terrestrial life, spin-gravity is adjustable to suit all your needs from drug manufacturing to industrial needs. You can move them if needed. If you embed them inside an asteroid for protection from radiation and other asteroids.
