What does the Orthodox Church teach about tithing? In a lot of Protestant churches it is expected that you tithe ten percent of your income. But what about the Orthodox Church? Watch our latest video with Fr. Panayiotis, Ph.D. to hear his answer to this question.

I've been struggling with this, as I come from a Protestant background. I'm soon to be baptized into the Orthodox Church ♥️ However, I've been struggling financially. I really do want to support my Parish financially and I will, but I haven't always been able to do 10% or more lately. I'm an artist kind of, so I want to become an iconographer and give back in this way as well. Please pray for me 🙏

This was a good, nuanced discussion. As someone who grew up in an evangelical tradition, I can confirm many protestant pastors pushed a 10% minimum tithe on everyone regardless of their ability to pay, often under some kind of “name it, claim it” prosperity gospel nonsense. This usually resulted in bigger church facilities and bloated administrative staffs to run all the church programs that got created along the way, which in turn required more money to sustain and more guilt trips from the pulpit about giving more. It really leaves a sour taste in your mouth after awhile. Unfortunately, while not as frequent, I still hear a 10% tithe on earnings being preached as dogma in Orthodox parishes. Realistically, the money to run these parishes has to come from somewhere, so its not out of line to expect the members to kick in, but no one should every be guilted about not paying a levitical 10%

I like your comment on tithing... That we are required to give our whole lives.. that's good. But I when I was protestant they didn't require tithing but only strongly encouraged it. Bless them,. They are trying. Thank you for helping me come closer to Yeshua and His Orthodoxy.

Since I have been searching for more understanding, this is something that I had a great issue with personally. There have been ministries that I have given to, however it was not out of this notion to give a legalistic amount, and God blessed me from that. However I have also tried to follow the command of the tithe and that never worked for me, for many reasons. The Orthodox Church has shed much light in areas that I didn't know I had issues in, and I am still being transformed by the renewing of my mind. I found that I and probably many others have an issue with this juridical mindset of obligation. This is not an attack on giving, only to the cash cow who leaves many helpless. The early church was not asked for a certain amount, rather they were to give their whole lives with an open hand out of faith, usually a pledge was made out of free will giving, and much was given sacrificially, and much more than 10 percent. Oddly enough this was more appealing to me. I find myself being more obedient in supporting what I love, and that is the Church.

Well stated! There's no such thing as a biblical tithe received from earned wages. Not New Testament, or Old. And yes, it was evident money was widely used and wages were earned during those times. We're free to give, not bound to pay.

The orthodox study Bible says in Mt 23:23 that the church has maintained the ancient practices of tithing (and it quotes the text "These you ought to have done"). Is this a lie, right?
@iddodomingo6118
@iddodomingo6118 4 года назад
Lucas Gama first of all the text does not state that the Pharisees should also had done tithe. They did tithe from eatable foods just as Moses commanded even tho they were under the Roman money influence. Jesus said you ought also to have done the greater matters which are love etc. But you will not find the apostolic fathers mention tithe unless they are against so that’s how they understood tithe, as part of the law.

@@iddodomingo6118 what about when Abraham gave 10% to God when there was not the Law of Moses? what does it mean? Protestants use that verse for saying that tithing was also a practice even before the Law

@@iddodomingo6118 Hebrews 7:2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness"; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.”

Okay, and? Not everyone can give 10% and the Protestant Church that my brother and in laws attend start each service by praying for money.... Last time they even had a testimony from a woman who bought someone a car, then someone bought her a house, etc. Gospel prosperity.

Father, I have several questions. 1. What about the first fruits where we give unto G-d our first produce, children, love stock etc....? 2.what about the didache where it espouses the continuing of giving the first fruits of both vegetables and fruits and grains etc....? Please help my understanding.

In response to your questions, the point I try to make in the video is that we should give, but not only 10% or just the first fruits. Rather we should give everything. We should surrender our whole life and everything we have to the Lord. Then it will be much easier to give 10%, or the first fruits of what we earn. 10% is not enough any more.
