What are your thoughts on switching stances? Good or bad idea? Something everyone should try or is it just for advanced martial artists?

Petrosyan got knocked out from a stance switch. Also Samy sana lost his last fight after a stance switch hihg kick So it can be good to open unexpected angles and knockout oportunities. Good to mix up and have a wide arsenal, also u got ur oponent something to think about. Is it a good idea to train it? It depends on how much time u have to train. For begginers its better to stick with the basics

I like to stance switch. Defensively, you're constantly throwing different looks to your opponent which can be confusing and it's easy to set up angles. Your advice to learn one side really good first is really a must before you try switching. Once you start stance switching, it can be frustrating because the other side is so much better and everything from basic muscle memory to balance to footwork is reversed. Something as simple as what foot you use to push off with can throw you really off. You really have to start at the beginning and train the other side like you did your original side. Once you have that down then you have to learn how to safely switch. There are a number of footwork patterns such as triangle steps which allow you to smoothly switch. And I almost always throw up some kind of offense when switching. A jab or a lead hand feint or obstruction thrown while switching can disguise the switch. It's not for everyone.

I switch stances a lot. Naturally I'm orthodox, but after almost having my left hand amputated due to an infected injury I had to adapt to southpaw. The only drawback I have is using and generating power with my left hand due to the scar tissue across the back of my hand

Good advice. That said, just because changing stances doesn’t work for somebody doesn’t mean using shifts into the opposite stance to create openings for new attacks and then getting back to your usual stance quickly won’t be useful. It seems like a lot of guys are afraid to try shifting because they’re so stuck in the idea that one should not switch stances.
@paulpelle3046

Exactly my point @IMightBeWrong. There’s a HUGE difference between temporarily switching stances to create better openings, and staying PERMANENTLY in your weaker stance during a round. 🙏

I personally switched to southpaw after training Orthodox stance in Muay Thai and Boxing for 5 years. The reason for this change Is my vision is just better my right eye, meaning I can simply see what the opponent is throwing at me making my defence better (your lead eye gets used more). It took me time to adapt and a lot of frustration in sparring but now I am mostly a southpaw fighter that is heavily right handed with a super annoying jab and right switch kick making it a hard puzzle to solve.

Stance switch can be really useful, especially for MMA. Cruz laid out the reasons why it's useful and we're seeing many fighters apply these concepts, like Adesanya or Dillashaw. Stance switching is also a really broad concept too. Dillashaw is one of the fighters who can use it at a high level. It really comes down to how much time you've invested into understanding it. One of the issues are people who dismiss it. They're likely to be basic fighters who will be quick to dismiss it. There's nothing wrong with being basic, but dimissing something will only hurt your understanding. You benefit more from understaning how it's used than just dismissing it. There's a ton of uses of stance switching and its such a broad concept to simply dismiss. You can use it to feint, open open up unique offensive angles, create defensively good angles to counter or avoid takedowns, you can use it to bait the opponent, close distance. If somebody can't figure out how stance switching can be used for these applications, it's probably a sign that there's still a lot to learn.
@DeathscytheBleh
@DeathscytheBleh 2 года назад
Are there guys out there who do this alot that arent tiny dudes like Dilishaw/cruz? I wrote this off as a style for small guys on EPO but maybe I'm wrong. I think it looks sloppy but again, just my opinion. I have to admit it works those guys can take an angle
@kenpachizaraki4184
@kenpachizaraki4184 2 года назад
@@DeathscytheBleh adesanya uses it. But mainly defensively. Wonderboy, Cory sandhagen yan, Max holloway, Loma, Ggg, to be honest, many people use it. Mike Tyson uses a form of stance switching in the form of his signature D'Amato shift. Not sure what you count as small guys but its not suited for big guys like heavyweights unless they have agile movement. They naturally carry a lot of excess weight and prefer to be more flat footed so you don't see it as much as fighters get heavier. It comes from other arts in the first place so it isn't exactly unque to mma. Nothing in striking is new when we're talking mma. It's built off concepts from other striking arts. Cruz openly talks about drawing his style from classic boxers like willie pep. Guys like tj and cruz will use it often but not always. There's certain fights and style matchups where it wont work as well and they resort to using less of it. Example, tj vs sandhangen. It's easier to think of it as a tool. Sometimes a tool works for one scenario and sometimes it doesn't. I don't think of stance switching as a style. It's more like a tool and some fighters may end up building a style more heavily around that tool. Similar to how a fighter builds a style off a jab, or leg kicks etc.

Depends on the style too i think in TKD they switch stances very often and in muay thai and boxing as well they switch to a somewhat lesser extent. Sometimes ill step forward with my right leg into a left cross from orthodox stance, or step back with the lead leg and pivot into a right hand check hook. I dont think constantly switching stances a lot is a good idea but its good to have a couple tools for extra adaptability to at least be comfortable doing it without tripping over yourself if you need to. Then again i havent really used these moves in sparring yet so i may be talking out my ass

Thank you! I've seen so many young people come up and try stance switching with me and as I'm already a southpaw I know what they'll be exposed to. So I learned every technique on both sides to the point that they’re identical. She. I go into highschool and found out the majority of people only fight in one stance I was so confused lol. I was like “Wait, y’all don’t randomly switch stances in a fight?” It’s great skill to have in your toolkit, definitely worth taking the time to learn it and make it both stances feel “orthodox” or “unorthodox”, they’re one in the same now 😂 🤷🏾‍♂️ 🥊

My personal experience is that stance switching is way more usefull in light contact rulesets. It gives you a ton of extra ways to hit people once you're used to it and because of it being light contact the downsides are somewhat lowered. I'd never advise anyone to spend to much energy on the whole switching though. For me it's mostly about not having to worry about returning back to safe orthodox stance, that opens a lot of possibilities .... but again probably would go back to only orthodox with a skilled opponent in full contact rulesets, because the risks from a slip up is a lot higher.

A lot of old school boxers and boxing commentators do not like stance switching and say as much when they see it during a fight. Recently, I was watching an RJJ Boxing card on UFC Fight Pass and one of the boxers switched stances and Smitty said he didn't like it when young fighters do that and as he was about to explain himself the boxer got knocked down and he didn't even have to explain. Most people who switch stances know the offense of both stances but have tissue paper defense in one of them

I switch to southpaw is if I’m pushing the fight, usually what I’ve noticed is that defensively is not smart to try and defend punches on the guard. If I’m in southpaw and I find my self getting pressed I rely on my lateral movement to create space and sneaking in a feint without giving it away to my opponent that I’m having a little trouble so he doesn’t gain confidence. It really depends I wouldn’t tell anyone to make it their entire style to switch hit, it really depends on the opponent.

I studied, if you able to practice a high power shots in both sides just in kick boxing you got left spinning and right front high kick or in punches if you practice some deadly hook from right and deadly jabs from left the combination becomes a great way of ARSENAL of both sides makes a great switiching stance player and for defence it should be practice in both ways.

Almost every time I have switched this week I have had great success. Sometimes If they circle out to the left I throw I rear roundhouse. Sometimes If they circle out to the right I throw a straight left. My straight left lands almost every time because my opponents' sense of range has been disrupted and I have a really good straight left from SP. I never had success then idk what happened. Orthodox vs orthodox is not the same fight as orthodox vs southpaw. The priority and pattern changes. Knowing the opponents’ pattern and priorities as well as your own is important insight and a huge advantage. The stance may be temporary but the knowledge is forever. I personally stopped getting horribly wrecked from southpaws in sparring ever since I switched stance and started walking in their shoes. But thats just my experience.

My feeling is stance switching is EITHER the newest fad when done all the time as a style of its own OR just something people have been doing incidentally in fights all the time but is only now being talked about as some kind of revolutionary thing to do. For instance, if you should end up squared up with your opponent, why not take a step forward with the other leg so you can hit him with a power shot as he moves the other direction in an evasive move? I don't consider a case like that to be "stance switching" so much as "switching your stance." But then again, my personal "style" is just to be as non-tricky and conventionally boring as possible so maybe I'm not the guy to comment on this.

If I switch a stance I end up in orthodox and everybody has more experience fighting against it, even other southpaws. The closest thing to a stance switch I use are shights and during quick angle changes. I think it is much better trick to learn for orthodox fighters. You video montages of GGG is more shifting than stance switching. GGG is always 100% on his orthodox stance and always resets back to it. You will never see him switching to southpaw to "box" in a middle of a fight, unless he is shifting or in an angle. Yes, all boxers can throw punches from any stance and from any arm, but that doesn't mean they can box from both. The only pro boxer that I've seen be successful at switching stance during a fight and box from them is Terrance Crawford. I think people are confusing shifting and stance switching. But if the question: is it important to learn to punch from difference stances? then yes, just like it is important to learn to punch from both arms. But I highly suggest you master your stance before anything. You can't go around switching stance just because you think you punch from both sides and attempt it during a fight. I am sure there are possibilities you probably can't slip, dodge, Bob and weave from your original command anyways.
