Please be careful who you buy 18650 Lithium Ion cells from, as a lot of them are fake. The best way is to check the reviews, like on these 18650's amzn.to/30x6ZFH .

Yesterday I made a short circuit by mistake with an 18650 battery taken out of a Lidl drill and it instantly caught fire in my hand, instinctively I threw it down but it had already caused a 5mm burn on my finger. These 18650 batteries are extremely dangerous, I never thought that from a short circuit a battery could catch fire in less than 1 second and become incandescent

Incase anyone wants genuine battery’s go to fogstar. All the 18650’s and 20700’s i have purchased from them have been + or - a couple of mah Just make sure you know what amps your application needs cus if you go under it can be dangerous and over should be perfectly fine. For example 2x 3400 mah at 6.2amps will not run anything that needs over 12.4 amps for longer than a few seconds every couple of minutes. However if you step down to 2500mah at 20 amps a cell thats 40 amps and so if it uses less your safe. Also for vaping just keep a battery pack handy and charge when not using should not take over two hours for a full charge and so just keep topping it up this will also increase the cells life time as part cycles put much less straing on the cells as they will be putting out a neer constant amperage regardless of its voltage damaging the cells faster than using it from 100% to lets say 60% and charging again leave cells at 40-50% for storage and 20%-30% for shipping to reduce total energy so in case of damage the cells will do less damage

I don't understand why using thick gauge wires to wire batteries would be a problem. To my understanding the bigger the wire gauge is the less resistance it'll have. Could someone explain it to me?
@hardnachopuppy

Wire which are just thick enough to carru the batteries rated current are ideal cause in case of short circuit the wires themselves act like a fuse
@hadi27O
@hadi27O 10 месяцев назад
look closely at 1:39 it's not mentioned as "thick gauge", but "high gauge". in terms of cables, lower the awg number mean thicker cable core. Example: 18 AWG is lot more thicker than 26 AWG.

Depends on the chemistry. The LiFePO4 batteries seem to be pretty much inert, even if you torch them. LiCO and LiPO are the mainstream batteries, but they are very dangerous. Even Tesla cars can burst into flames, because they use that chemistry.

Actually, the problem is very strange, and happens when the cells become overcharged. Say you have 4 cells in series, if all cells are the same, it is good. But say one cell becomes bad, it may stop holding a charge, so when it is charged, its voltage rises quickly, this causes the voltage to go over 4.2 volts, which causes explosion. This can also happen when cells are in parallel, because the bad cell is charged by the good cell.

I avoid Ultrafire and similar cheap cells. I have a flashlight that I use these in. I do not vape or smoke. The unsafe ones will often have a very unrealistic capacity on the wrapper. Even if they don't end up being unsafe you are cheated by the ones with sand in them because you don't get the capacity you would realistically expect

@charleshines6155

The ones I don't trust are those 18650s that have something like 9800 mAh on their labels. Usually those ones appear to be a generic or much lesser known brand. Ultrafire comes to mind with all the blatantly false capacities. Then there are some of those that just have a smaller battery inside them a powdery filler which might be sand. While those ones might work for some things they won't last as long as you might expect them to. Then they may even be so badly made inside that they are not even safe. The way I see it 18650 and other lithium ion cells can be safe if you use some common sense and use a good charger and also not overly discharge or short them out. These cells WILL get dangerously hot and even explode or vent if you mistreat them. I remember once I was at a Walmart store and some guy had batteries in his pocket with his keys. They looked like they might be AA or some other size alkaline battery but these things caught his pants on fire and were glowing red on the ground. I do not know the whole story behind that but it is a safe bet that he has gone to the burn unit very soon after that. NO batteries should be kept in your pocket in such a way. Even loose change or any other metal object near a battery can cause a very similar problem. I do not know that guy or anything about him but I hope he is OK and has learned his lesson and won't do that ever again. Think about it, what if the batteries blew up and harmed someone nearby? They would sue him. I most certainly would have sued him if his stupidity caused injury to me with those batteries. There are a number of ways an exploding battery could cause permanent injury. Blindness is one of them.

Your conclusions are weird 1. the main issue seems to be improperly designed circuits/wiring 2. most people who buy these products expect them not to explode 3. the main causes of the explosions are because of the lit ion battery (regardless of how it is assembled), the kind of battery is what causes the final result Now since people can't be expected to take apart everything they buy and inspect the wiring, they should be weary of buying things that use lit ion batteries.

Luckily got it put out before it could try to burn our whole San Francisco condo down. Landlord was pissed when I moved out and finally had to show him the burn marks left on the carpet a couple years later

Today i just disasembled a vape that i found in the streets just for the battery i was looking at the battery in my hand and saw that the battery had very bad manufacturing quality i also saw that the negative terminal had a fake ground wire, i was looking at the battery when one of the wires decided to self combust in my hands luckily the cell itself didnt combust it was like the crappy terminal that conected it to the actual cells with no protecction at all it was wrapped in electrical tape (btw my first instinct was to throw it to the wall the whole ground wire burned and in fear of anything more happening i disposed off the battery, also my hands smell sweet after the battery combusted on my hands even after washing 2 times my hand, luckily i didn't even get burnt or blind, my hands are still shaking like wtf)

@WindyJAMiller
@WindyJAMiller 6 лет назад
No they are not, sorry, NO THEY ARE NOT. Liquid fuels are the most dangerous fuels you can get.
@WindyJAMiller
@WindyJAMiller 6 лет назад
You've bought up some other points that have nothing to do with your original point which is what I was specifically responding to and shall continue with. Yes liquid fuels require oxygen, and there is plenty of that around thankfully (science). When one does have a crash with a tank of liquid fuel, say petrol, the tank can rupture, the liquid run out all over the occupants, on the floor and generally splash about a bit. The nature of an internal combustion engine being what it is there are lots of hot objects about that the petrol can get to and given that petrol has a very low flash point (some science for you there too), chances of fire are very very high. The joy of a liquid fuel of course is it runs under gravity and so will spread around as it is alight, which is fun if you are unlucky enough to be trapped in a car, so I am confident in saying it is not a 'safe' fuel. What makes it a 'safe' fuel is how designers and engineers go about building in safety into the systems that store and control the flow of the liquid, for example using plastic fuel tanks that are much more durable than their steel counterparts and also the use of computers to detect crashes and stop lifter pumps and fuel injection systems dead in their track the instant a crash occurs. So if we apply the same concept of designing safety into the energy storage system application for a car using LIPO than we can say with a high degree of certainty that batteries are much safer because they don't run around and instantly combust in the presence of oxygen. Now I appreciate you have some hang ups with the way electric vehicles are funded and this means you may be looking for any reason, regardless of how spurious, to support you argument but LIPO batteries are used in everything these days, and whilst you do here the odd, and I will stress this, the odd story of a battery exploding it does not happen at anywhere near the level you're inferring.
@WindyJAMiller
@WindyJAMiller 6 лет назад
Interesting video, maybe we will see new batteries in the future, maybe we wont. With any technology, if you use it for what its not designed for it will run into trouble. That's the major point I've been working on here, everything has limitation and working within these keeps us safe from danger. We also need to keep are comparisons, apples for apples, or else run the risk of missing the point in hand.
