Another advantage of experimenting with switch-hitting is that you may find that you like the way you hit with the opposite hand. Many players over the years started as switch-hitters, but became opposite-handed hitters, for example, a player who Bats-Left but Throws-Right, such as Ted Williams, Wade Boggs, and George Brett. Interesting tidbit: over 60% of all lefthanded hitters in MLB are righthanded throwers.
My son is 14 and he is a catcher. He started practicing switch hitting about 2 years ago, he has become very good at switch hitting. He is a power hitter in the 3/4 spot and is equally successful hitting right or left. It has definitely taken him some time and a lot of work to master this skill.
How long do you think it’d take to really get it? I hit around 320 last year and I’m going into my senior year. I really wanna play college baseball so if hitting left handed to will help I’d try it. What do you think?
I think now is the perfect time to try it in the offseason. Work hard at it for the next couple of months and see if it's something that sticks. You can always go back to just hitting from one side of the plate. I'd give it a shot!
Me too! I am basically ambidextrous but I don’t hit lefty, but I’ve been practicing switch hitting over the past few months and I’ve gotten a lot better
Good stuff coach, remember most players who switch hit aren’t the same from both sides of the plate, most say they have different approaches. Eddie Murray use to hit lefty to shorten his swing righty, wasn’t until his last year in the minors when his coach suggested he try batting lefty in a game. If anyone is going to try it, start off slow to avoid injuries and remember to stay patient, take a long time before ur successful
Great video man i loved it and im thinkimg in becoming a switch hitter. Anyway good job , and keep it up Loved your video a lot man and keep up the legit work
Hey coach Justin, awesome video! I was wondering if you could make a video on how YOU would run an efficient practice for the FIRST practice of the season.
im 13 and im going to 8th we dont have baseball in middle school so im practicing left hand and im hoping to get it down before highschool also thanks for the tips
What age do you think is too old to try this? I’m going to be a sophomore in high school and just wondered if it would really benefit me to try and hit left handed.
I have been switch hitting Since I’ve been 12 years old, except I don’t do it like normal people do. When I’m slumping right-handed and off-balance I switch over to left-handed and it helps me see the ball better right hand, LOL I know it’s weird but it works
That's awesome! That's similar to what I recommend in the video... switching over to hit a few pitches from the other side to work on watching the ball all the way to your bat! Thanks for watching!
next year i’m planning on being both a switch hitter and switch pitcher, i’ve been able to throw with both my hands naturally for a while now, do you have any tips on switch pitching?
I've played for 3 years and have played every position on the field except for pitcher and I try my best at every position I play and have been thinking about becoming a switch hitter
It never hurts to do it occasionally. I would probably rotate in the direction that you throw more often... because typically you'll take more swings in a practice than you will throws, so you'll turn more with your left side than your right side.
It's all good! Thanks for watching and I'm glad the video was helpful! I don't think there's a perfect "right age" to start switch hitting, but I think it's definitely easier the earlier you get started! Give it a shot!
My son has been able to become a switch hitter. His batting stance differs big time from his normal righty gitting stance. should his stance be the same from both sides of the plate?
Chipper Jones had two different stances and even used a different bat when he hit lefty vs when he hit righty. So no, a different style or stance is no problem.
I'm naturally both, left and right handed with both hitting and pitching, One didnt feel unnatural. I had a really high hitting % but my pitching was trash. Never had that power behind them. My old couch said I could have been great but I quit too soon. Got into drawing. I kind of regret that decision.
I am a righty hitter and a lefty thrower and I am going into 8th grade next year. I have hit from the left hand side from time to time for fun but I have now began to ramp it up and have been trying to get equal reps and it feels pretty smooth given that I am not a natural lefty batter. I was wondering if you thought it would be a good idea to start really switch hitting. Thanks!
I'm a switch hitter now got it like 3 weeks ago was excited righty was always my dominant side but I tried left before couldn't do it now I could hit lefty and right made a homer already
A switch hitter isn't always a skill that can be learned. Younger you are, the easier it is to learn. But I've never had to learn. It came naturally. And the advantage you have against the pitchers is immense. My nightmares were switch pitchers. They somehow are unaffected by the pressure a switch hitter puts on the pitchers. Baseball for some is boring. But they don't understand the psychology behind each decision made on the field. Don't be disappointed if at first you fail. Eventually, that first homerun will come and then the next and the next..... Stretching is the key to baseball. Avoid unnecessary injuries.
I do understand what ur saying but my dads friend was in the minors and got to switch hitting in the minors! And made him get called up but great video
