Next week there will be a video addressing disparities in healthcare. I wanted to give it the time in needs in terms of research, and take time to learn as well. See you next week for an important conversation I was not ready to have today 🖤

Becoming an LVN was one of the best decisions because at 20yrs old I was already making 50k a year. It also exposed me to many professions in the medical field and helped me find my interest in becoming an SLP, I recently completed my bachelor's in SLP and will be applying to grad schools soon. I was able to make a good income while continuing my education and now with 6yrs experience I have learned so much and I love my job I have now in a subacute unit as "respiratory lvn" where I do many of the same tasks as the RTs. For people that are also not 100% ready to commit to nursing forever I think this is a good option.

I can't believe how much I hear online about LPNs being phased out. Where I live they are utilized in every area of healthcare I can think of. Nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, home health, dermatology offices, etc. On average an LPN will start with no experience at 18-20 dollars an hour. In some places more depending on the job. My ex mother in law worked in a dermatology office for years and made killer money. I'm glad I live in an area that still values LPNs.

Yes. LPNs will not be phased out any time soon. There is too much of a nursing shortage for that. Lol they better take what they can get. Especially with the pandemic. A lot of nurses went into retirement early and some even left the field. In my area LPNs can work in many settings. Also depending on which speciality...LPNs can make more. I make $21-$26/hour right now as a CNA.

But the point I was getting at if someone is looking to make an educational investment, there's a lot more bang for your buck if you become an LPN (or even a CNA.) ...Most medical assistants can't afford to live alone due to low wages/no overtime. I started as a Cna and worked in home care as a caretaker and in LTC for 6 years . I then went through an Lpn program ( took 1 year of school) and worked as a Lpn for 7 years. I worked in a family clinic , home health and as a school nurse during this time and made decent money . I just graduated from a bridge program from Lpn to RN which only took a year in texas . I'm glad I did Lpn first, in my opinion it made the transition and content in the RN program much easier to understand and the clinical aspect was easier for me since I had been in healthcare as an LPN. It just helps you build on what you already know . My perspective is if you get your Lpn first which takes a year , you can work as a LPN making decent money while transitioning/bridging to RN which in most areas is only a year program vs taking 2 years+ to become a RN without the transition. I felt better prepared with this route .

@@kimberlymichel725 Hello Kimberly, I was a single mother of 3 working as a CNA and barely making ends meet . This is what encouraged me to move forward with LVN. It took me 1 year to complete and as an LVN I was able to breathe financially . I do think it would be a great opportunity for you if you are looking into nursing, it's a great start . There are many opportunities as an LVN and this is what helped me to be stable financially . Like I stated above if you're interested in RN, once you get your LVN It will only take you a year to transition to RN which is awesome ! Just pray and led God lead you In the direction you need to go in he won't steer you wrong . Don't let fear get in the way and all the what ifs that come along with wanting to start a new journey , fear tries to block us from our blessings . I was afraid the first time (with LVN) but I made it out and God provided for me during that , I was afraid again transitioning to RN and had many legitimate reasons why I felt I wasn't sure I would be able to do it (5children and a working mom ) but I stepped out on faith and I was able to do it just graduated in May. You are able to do whatever you set your mind to . Have faith , let God lead you and trust the process . Again don't let fear of the unknown stop you !

I am a FL LPN. My program was 1year. There are jobs available in every setting(LTC, outpatient surgical, substance abuse, dialysis, home health, blood bank, etc) with the exception of most hospitals which has positions mostly available in the ER, L&D, and surgical assisting the RN with patients as opposed to having your own patients to care for. I became a LPN due to the long waiting lists for RN programs in my area, and the opportunity to make more money, faster. I was able to double my CNA pay right out of school and now make even more due to experience. Now that I am in a LPN-RN bridge program, the material is not so overwhelming because its like just another layer being added and I am able to help my classmates that are not LPNs better understand the material. Another, great point to make, Ive encountered a lot as a LPN so I anticipate a much smother transition to RN. LPNs in FL can administer IV meds and do IV starts, with additional training.

Personally I did the LPN program cuz I had kids and didn't have the time to wait for the RN program. I am an LPN. I took the LPN Exit Option in my dual-enrollment RN, BSN program. The term "exit option" is misleading, because you don't actually have to exit the entire program. You can get the LPN in the summer, and finish the last two terms of RN school in fall. So far, it is the best choice I could have made because some classes may be canceled due to COVID-19. Also, I like the idea of getting to transition before being thrown into the new grad deep end as an RN. I am hoping to learn time management skills as an LPN while I finish my RN, BSN! I think having real nursing experience before getting my RN will distinguish me from other new grads next May.

LPN in NJ. I work in a short-term inpatient rehab facility. Our patients generally stay 1 week to 2 months. I’ve worked in long term care and assisted living. I love this part of nursing. I do want to advance to an RN/BSN and maybe further. But I will say I’m often going to work and relieving an RN or giving report and endorsing my assignment to an RN. LPNs and RNs are interchangeable in the same position as bedside/floor nurses. We also have both RNs and LPNs as desk nurses and wound care nurses. It’s funny because the area where I live, people think LPNs are obsolete. Then these facilities I’ve worked in are full of LPNs (many who have had other professions and even degrees in other areas).

I was only making 30k doing administrative work and I bumped up to 60-70k the first year of working with my LPN. And it was relatively quick to get since my bachelor's covered most of the prerequisite classes.

I’ve been following you since before I was in nursing school! I used to be a CNA in long term care but I recently got my LPN! At my school, everyone goes LPN then to RN. There’s no other choice. Pre reqs take 1 year, LPN takes 1 year and so does RN. That’s pretty normal for getting your ADN so it takes no extra time and it’s so cheap! Plus I make more money now than I did as a tech. Also, I wanted to say I work with an LVN and she said the only difference is if you live in Texas or Cali, LVNs have a larger scope so they start IVs and do assessments that LPNs can’t do. I want to work in the ICU so I need my RN, but LPN has been a great stepping stone for me!

35 YO male CNA currently applying to LPN programs. the reason I chose that over RN was that my prerequisite GPA is 3.2. I cannot stand working LTC but my facility also has a rehab floor which I am working now. If all there is in my area for LPN is LTC jobs, then I will have to look at a different profession in the medical field.

Pls become an RN as it is vry versatile n rewarding in terms of growth. As a LPN u r stuck, there isnt any GREAT opportunities no matter WHAT anyone says. If YOU want to become an RN after becoming an LPN then u r wasting ur time n money. Its not easy to breach from LPN to RN. Take a look at the amt of pre-reqs required to become an RN from LPN. MOST importantly the pay GAP between RN n LPN is lots. And there is no respect for LPNS. Start working as an LPN, u wil find ot the REALITY soon.

Hi Liz!! :-) I love that you posted this video! I literally just posted my last assignment and graduate with my LPN on Friday 👩🏻‍🎓👩🏻‍🎓 I completely agree with your thoughts! Real briefly, I graduated as a Medical Assistant in ‘06. Love my job but wanted more- started RN prerequisites 10 years ago.. attempted and failed to get accepted into local Associate RN programs as was facing being timed out of some of my prerequisites, so I applied for the LPN program and here I am!!! ❤️❤️ I will have to work 1,000 hours as an LPN before I can apply to the bridge program and I will do just that. I’m in Seattle, WA and largely LPNs are as you say in Long Term Care, personally it’s not for me, but they do have some ambulatory clinic positions and also there’s home health too- I’m okay really with anything but LTC/SNF as I know it’s not long term 😊😊 I’m up for any questions if needed too! 😊😊

I'm starting with my LPN program in the Fall and doing bridge programs after that (long term goal is FNP). The time frame to BSN is about the same and the cost is significantly less than going straight to a four year university. Even with the grades I decided that experience mattered more to me because this will be my first time working in healthcare and I learn best and feel more confident and competent in taking on new endeavors when I've had hands on training. Overall, the cost, clinical driven approach, and appeal of being able to start working in the field sooner made the difference for me. I live in NC and there are a lot of jobs on the boards and many pathways to education available to get to where you want to go.

Good video Liz!! If you want to be an LPN forever, then go to school for that, but realize hospitals are hiring less and less LPNs/LVNs. If you want to be an RN, just go to nursing school for your RN, skip the LPN as it is a waste of time and money in this case. If you want more job flexibility with an expanded role than go to the RN program. In my state LPNs can't do assessments in the inpatient or ER setting within the hospital without supervision, they could not hang blood , they could not hang the first dose of antibiotics, and could not push or hang a lot of IV meds. It was to the point that it was a waste of time having them because they were still taking an RN away from other duties so that they could be supervised doing certain things as required by policy. My point is, as Liz stated, if you want to be an RN go directly into school for your RN!

My initial goal had been to become an RN so I could work in a hospital and do peds. But I just got a job at a rehab facility as a CNA and I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying working with an older population. So now I'm considering getting my LPN instead and working at the same rehab place. Seems much less stressful than a hospital setting (I'm just assuming) so I'm thinking once I have kids I'll appreciate that! Side note, here in CO I heard that LPN-RN bridge programs are hard to find, so I was told that if I can get into an RN program to jump on it and forget LPN, so I don't get stuck unable to bridge later on. Still undecided though!

I’ve been a CNA for 13 years and I’ve moved on from LTC to the acute care setting the last couple of years. I’ve looked for opportunities to explore ability to gain experience before nursing school to have more awareness. It seems more inviting to join a lpn program because it gets your foot in door to a nursing program in a shorter time. In the acute setting and overall there is only expansion as a RN or higher. The be all is the RN if nursing is the goal. There isn’t a focus on building up cnas to exist to be stronger in their role to support RNs or lpns.
