Great video, and great tip on checking for transmission leak. We purchased a 2015 Limited 5/20. Shortly after noticed small ATF drip. Long story short Toyota replaced transmission under powertrain warranty. Was told there is an issue with the transmission housing casting. It may appear that transmission pump seal is bad, but is actually a defect in the housing. Replacing pump seal (very expensive due to labor involved) won’t fix. If not under warranty dealer charges $4200 for transmission and approx. 16 hours labor.

Glad you had that one fixed under warranty! This is a one time issue, the new transmission won’t have this issue again.

@@TheCarCareNut I have a 2014 RAV4 AWD Limited that we purchased new. Now with almost 198,000 miles on it, my transmission is beginning to slip. So I'm taking it to the dealership for a diagnostic eval. It's obviously out of warranty. So I'm dreading the results. I can't afford another new RAV4 Limited; they cost around $45,000. And this video scared me because of the COMPLEXITY of the car and therefore its eventual cost to repair! So now 85 and retired, I'm in a real dilemma!!

@leochen887 up until 2016 rav4 had a lot problems. Engine Transmission seems been fixed for 2016 and newer. Id get rid the 2014 and try looking for a 2016 -2019 rav4 if you like rav4, or a 2009 and newr 4 runner, or older matrix 2005-2008 , or a 2015 and newer camry, 2015 and newer rx350, gs350, es350. New car prices are insane and not worth it.

I have a 2014 Rav4 Limited. I love the car, but Toyota really F*** up on the rear power hatch. I have had nothing but problems with it especially in snow and ice. I finally ended up tearing out the power cylinders, threw them in the trash and converted it to a manual lift hatch using gas lift cylinders on A---* zon and the non-power cylinder brackets from a dealer. BTW there is a switch in the glove box to choose auto or manual lift which may help. I still needed new cylinders and decided to convert to manual only which are much more affordable as well. 👍 As far as the brakes, when it was time to replace the pads, I bought aftermarket drilled/slotted rotors and high-end ceramic pads.. What a difference... It stops on a dime and no shudder or squeaks front or rear...

my wife is driving 2015 Rav4 limited, we bought it certified pre-owned 3.5 years ago with 27k miles, now it has 58k miles. The only issue we had - leaking water pump, which was replaced under warranty. other than that - no issues at all apart usual wear and tear, brakes, rotors, tires etc. Car is smooth, no issues with shifting. Planning to do 60k service soon.

To avoid the 2014 RAV4 shutter I payed $170.00 for the transmission software (firmware) up date. Should I drive in the eco or normal mode. I have had no shutter ever. I change the transmission fluid every 40,000 miles

The 2018 Rav4s are a little top heavy especially when cornering. The suspension is not that great. I recommend changing out the rug floor mats with the rubber bucket ones (e.g. Weathertech) especially in the trunk to prevent high voltage battery damage from accidental fluid spills.
@ejej6934
@ejej6934 2 года назад
You're correct: The suspension is far from great. I loaded my 2017 RAV4 for a weeklong camping trip and installed a hitch-mounted bike rack to carry 2 bikes. The headlights ended up pointing so high in the air that almost every oncoming vehicle was flicking their high beams at me, thinking I had my highs on. I had to get the dealer to adjust my headlights as low as they can be adjusted, just so the headlights would be about where they should point when on low beam. The car I traded in for the Toyota was a Subaru Forester. I could load that car any way I wanted, including putting about 250 pounds of sand bags in the back in the winter, and it rode level and the headlights aimed normally.

All I can say is thank goodness I quit being a car mechanic years ago. My dad was a mechanical engineer and I can only guess what he'd have to say about $1,000 radios that quit, high voltage batteries that have to be driven every day, and rear brake disks that make noise after every rain storm. When are people going to realize that the endless development of complex features on cars accomplishes only two things, higher profits for the manufacturers, and more problems for the mechanics? Enough is enough!

Thanks for the excellent videos! The knowledge you're sharing is really helping me figure out whether a hybrid is for me. I'm wondering if there are any easy ways to protect the high-voltage battery in the rav4 (which you mentioned is located under the back seat) from liquid spills? Some sort of waterproof cover or lining? If I end up with a rav4 I'd be using it a lot as an "SUV RV", possibly even doing a light camper conversion. Carrying around water jugs, perhaps having some sort of a makeshift sink, eating in the back when the weather is bad, etc. would all increase the risk of spills!

Thanks for all of your RU-vid videos they are very informative. Eventually, Red Rad Rav4 will get replaced and I am looking to the Rav4 Prime as a possible replacement. Care Care Nut AMD, today I looked at a 2017 Rav 5 hybrid Toyota Certified with 37,800 miles for $27,500. Per your fabulous video instructions, I checked for the oil leak - none. I found the filters which were down by the floor and checked them out. The filters looked a bit like an outside dryer vent that hadn’t been cleaned in a while - not horrendous but not definitely not clear/clean. I was actually surprised that the dealership had not checked and cleaned them but it did give me an idea that it may never have been checked. Does the dirty filter mean I should walk away? As I was taking the test drive, I educated the salesman about your channel and tested the steering (no accident). Clean carfax and regular oil changes. Your very valued thoughts?

Is it possible to upgrade the software of Rav4 2018. What I'm interested the most is the behavior of 'cruise' functionality. I drived a small Toyota Yaris 2021 and the difference between my Rav4 and Yaris cruise function is that when Rav4 speed falls bellow 40kmH/25mph the cruise functionality turns off... while the Yaris, stays on even when the car almost stops and if the car in front is driving away Yaris will continue to drive and follow the car in front. Levels are good but I can see the telltale sign on the hood. The water pump looks pretty straight forward to replace as a DIY project.I've replaced water pumps, starters, and A/C compressors on 80's and 90's cars but I'm a bit afraid of working on this Hybrid. Will I be getting in over my head being that this is a hybrid or is it a relatively easy job for a DIYer equipped with a garage full of tools?

That’s a very good question. Not all dealerships are good. And not all mechanics within a good dealership are good. Your best bet is to get to know the advisor and the mechanic working on the car so you’d know who’s taking care of your car and can make a better judgement if you should trust them or not

I have a 2014 AWD and only 71,000 miles on it. The rear brake calipers have to have yearly caliper rebuilds or the sliders hang up and eat pads and rotors. Recently, I had a vibration between 30 and 40 mph. It turned out to be what used to be called a universal joint, BUT, Toyota makes you buy the entire driveshaft for $900!!!!!!!!!!! They make the universals inseparable from the driveshaft and they even put a bearing in the middle. What is it, a dump truck with two-piece driveshaft?!! There are parts on these things that are not stocked in the U.S. too. My buddy had to buy a bearing from a guy in Canada! Mine has a 6-speed automatic. When they and other brands changed to the 8-speed, they created a monster that is constantly shifting gears and giving lousy performance. If you are considering a Rav, look for a VIN that starts with a J = Japan made. Having to take off the entire front facia to change a bulb is brilliant too. although it isn't a big deal, in my state we must turn on the headlights when using the wipers. For some reason, the clock dims with the lights on and you can't rear it in the daytime with the display dimmed.

@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 года назад
Most of Toyota crossovers are good. Some of the older ones you want to watch out as finding one in good shape gets harder. Highlander is usually a very good one to buy alongside the RAV4 but this very good car can easily turn into a nightmare if you buy one that’s neglected because it’s a Toyota. I would focus more on inspecting the car before buying it above all with Toyota

@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 4 года назад
I am working hard to get this one out as soon as I get my hands on a RAV4 to film with. The filters there’s 2 are part of a panel that’s on both sides of the back seat bottom. So as soon as you open the back door on both sides look underneath the seat and you’ll see a vent on each side. No need to remove the vent to clean it just run a vacuum to pull any debris out that’s stuck on the mesh of the filter and you’re good to go. If you shine a light and it looks clean and clear then you’re good to go. Removing that filter involves removing a few surrounding panels which I will cover in a video in the future.
@treborg777
@treborg777 4 года назад
The filter looks like it’s recessed 3 inches inside the seat bottom behind a tight grid, so it would be difficult to get a vacuum cleaner nozzle close enough to get much off the filters. I look forward to your video.

AMD, I was wondering if you knew what the chances are for a 2016 RAV4 AWD having a bad torque converter or transmission are? I recently got one and for some reason only at a specific speed (around 55 to 65 MPH) and very light throttle input, with the RPMs under 2000, there is a strange resonating, low frequency droning sound that happens. It increasing in intensity when there is higher load, like a hill. It goes away when shifted into neutral or when accelerating more rapidly. Sounds like the front of the car. It is accompanied with slight vibrations in the footwell and armrest area. Would this be symptomatic of a torque converter or transmission problem? Or something else in the driveline? It only happens at very light throttle input, when the "Eco" light is on the dash sometimes at lower speeds intermittently, but always consistantly at exactly between 55 to 60 MPH. Its driving me mad and I've taken it to Toyota twice to get looked at. At first they reset the Transmission computer and said it was the "shift points", but that did nothing to change it. The second time they simply told me it was "normal". I was wondering if maybe you might have encountered this before or have heard about it. Thanks in advance for you reply.
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 года назад
Hi! Depends on the intensity. This transmission does tend to have a tiny bit of vibration which is normal in that specific condition but if the dealership felt it and said it’s normal then likely it is. So the question is did you drive with the technician and show them the condition?
@norseneukdae
@norseneukdae 3 года назад
@@TheCarCareNut Thanks for the reply. Interesting, what kind of conditions cause the known vibrations? Yes both times I requested to have a tech ride with me and he did, it was the same person both time and he did hear the noise both times. The second time he said the noise was the transmission is "getting ready to shift" and he thought it was normal, but said he needed to confirm on another RAV4, but the odd thing is that there is not gear shift point at that speed so I didnt understand what he meant by that. What would cause a noise at a very specific speed range I wonder?
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 года назад
When the torque converter engages you will feel it and if you accelerate lightly you’ll have a feeling similar to when you’re in 5th gear in a manual transmission and accelerate without downshifting at lower speeds. Kinda of a lugging feeling

Very informative video. I have a question, mine is 2017 limited hybrid and I noticed that it decreased its fuel efficiency driving in a city. Before i usually got 5-7L/100 km and 655 km distance to empty. Now for the past 3-4mos, my rated fuel economy is 9-10L/100km and distance to empty was down to 580-595km per full tank. Theres nothing change in my driving style or in our road condition here in Vancouver. The service was all up to date and no major things happened in the past. I've tried to drive in a highway and compared it to my previous highway driving and it stays the same highway fuel economy with 7-8L/100km. Seems like only the city driving has an issue. That’s actually a new trending issue coming up with hybrid Rav4s the first step to fix it is to bleed the brakes. This has to be done with a scan tool and if this doesn’t fix it then it’ll need parts replacement due to a very small crack causing air to come into the system.
