Best thing I ever did was get a complete set of DMC. I can stitch what I want when I want and never worry.

I have a complete collection, I love the way it looks. Had it since the eighties, I also have 3 working projects, when I run low I always replace. Keep on doing what you are doing, got your back!!!Aloha from Hawaii.

I have a complete set of DMC except the variegated. I have had them since I started in 1980's and the price for DMC when on sale was 5 for a $1 or and when the 90's hit you could get them 3 for a $1.

I do, only because when my aunt passed away, my cousin gave me one of each then I bought those that were missing. My aunt owned a quilt store. Years ago I did but not sure what happened to them. I do have a giant bag from goodwill somewhere. It had a ton. We moved several states over and my stuff is in storage

There's another reason why I'm happy to have a complete floss collection. I often cross stitch Dimension kits, and have run out of their floss, so far, only twice. The first was when I first started stitching and ran out of their lime green. At that time, my town, seven miles away hadn't yet gotten a Hobby Lobby store, and Toledo, Ohio craft stores were thirty-five miles away. So I emailed Dimensions with my thread problem, and after two months, I received the needed floss in the mail from them. But just recently, I ran out of Dimensions very light blue, and only needed an 18-inch strand to complete the blended blue and white threads for my waterfalls picture. Having slowly purchased the complete DMC floss since my stitching beginnings, I was able to very closely match that very light blue by comparing it to all of my DMC blues. With the blending, you'd never know the difference, and I didn't have to wait two months nor make a trip to Hobby Lobby.

I had a full set and lost everything in a divorce. I’m starting to add another whole collection and wrapped close to 300 skeins. The on,y problem I’m having now is I’m doing punch needle with them as well as embroidery and I may need 2 to 6 of the same color. Then I have to buy more. Problems of a crafter I guess. They sure are pretty to look at and I enjoy touching each one when wrapping them

I’m surprised DMC doesn’t just have the full set available on their website - even for an exorbitant amount. I see large sets in wood chests on their site, but each seems to offer different colours. They are honestly missing out on impulse people like me who tend to wade into a hobby only to them make a beeline for the deep end.😅 I’ve stitched small kits off and on for years, and recently set about cataloging and ordering what I’ll need for one of my first large ‘pattern only’ purchase. I know that brands like Anchor and DMC are supposed to be reliable and not run their colours etc so I figured that would be best to use. I mean, how much could thread cost anyways? 😅 They would honestly make so much off people like me who just want to ‘have the thing’ and not have to plan ahead. If your the kind of person who would impulsively by a complete set, you are also the kind of person who wants the supplies to hand when inspiration strikes at 11pm. Anyways - are the cheaper alternatives any good? Is there one someone knows of that offers a similar ‘fell-swoop’ collection, but that will not immediately result in crafter tears of regret?

I started kitting up project by project, eventually I decide I wanted the whole set. So now I have all the normal, solid dmc colors. I don't have all the variegated, I don't have the satin or etoile or metallics. But I really like having basically all the dmc and knowing I have everything I need when I go to start a project.

I don't have the variegated or other specialty DMC threads either. I don't think I'd be likely to use them. And I forgot to mention that I don't have the newest batch of colors, but most of my charts are old, so that works out.

Exactly, even if you never use all of them. One day somebody will use. Even if I'm gone and it's sold on ebay haha. I wouldn't want my family to sell it however if nobody see's a use for it, I'd rather them give it away for free to somebody who does :)

After I'm gone, that's what I've told me family to do. I want my stash to benefit someone who can use it, not a thrift store that might make a few dollars.

I like having a full set of DMC for color converting. I can look at all the colors and match up what I like. Over the years, I've used most of what I have.

Just starting out. Can't afford buying the whole set so I just buy as needed, 10-20 at a time. I keep track online of what I have, what I've ordered and what projects need what color. So I always have a shopping list of floss with me. If I complete the collection someday, then awsesome! If not, then it's some money saved at least.

DMC has a great "deal" for this purpose; 500 skeins in a chest of draws for $500! Love it!

Hi! I'm just starting out, so far from a complete set, but working my way there. I'm curious how you sort your floss though; as I collect more I find that my initial organization method of grouping by color gets frustrating. I've been contemplating reorganizing numerically, but am interested to see how others do it.

I'm buying project by project at the moment...already have lots of duplicates, so I'm considering working toward a full set. How may floss boxes does it take to store them on bobbins? TIA, Jeannie

I think mine are in four of the little storage boxes. A couple of days ago, I saw an ad for "The Creative Options Double Sided Thread Organizer" which says it will hold a complete set. It's fairly inexpensive, so now I'm researching that.

@@joanngreen7059 I did order a set that had 489 colors. While we're social distancing, I've put all those on sticks (part of a cat toy) I got from the dollar tree. It took longer than I thought it would. I'm going to order more of the thread keeps Teresa Little Stitcher did a video on and I'll move them all to those as I use them in projects. The rest of the threads I'll order from some of the smaller online shops soon. Take care and stay safe.

I really want to stitch that one, but it intimidates me and I need a break from white floss for a while.

What is a master set of embroidery floss ?
@debbieolagues5283

I organized my collection according to color groups. When I need a red I can go to the box of reds instead of trying to figure out which box the color I want is in. I actually did this out of necessity because the floss I purchased Is not DMC and it no longer has color codes on their skeins. The quality of the floss is not the same as it was before I stopped embroidering. Next time I need floss I'm going with DMC.

Most of my projects call for specific color numbers, so it makes more sense for me to organize that way. I do plan on going through my thrifted floss and putting the "mystery colors" by color group so I'm more likely to use it up.
