If you tell me we'll be playing PlayStation games on a device of the size of a PS Memory Card in 20 years time in year 2000, I'd laughing at you, but two decades later here we are.
I mean, the psone was already pretty small 20 years ago, about the same size as the controller. Could fit in my jacket pocket easily. Even with the LCD attachment.
More like keychain PS1+TV+controller+many other consoles+all games for those consoles. Imagine saying, to a kid in 1995, this device would one day be released.
6:19 if you showed this to someone in 1996 when the PS1 was out and people were playing Crash Bandicoot this would have absolutely blown their minds that one day it would fit on something the length of your finger. It's amazing how Moore's law keeps electronics getting tinier yet incredibly more powerful and affordable.
I agree that this is primarily a novelty device, but it is surprisingly playable. I play a lot of GBC games and even the occasional PS1 games, as well as Super Mario 64. It all works very well and it's not like I'm playing for hours at a time. Just 20 minute bursts when I'm on the bus or I'm taking my lunch break
I would buy this if it only did GB, GBC, GBA. But it does so much more, and for a lot of the systems its emulation is top-notch! The screen is amazing. Yes it is tiny. Will that stop me playing SNES Chrono Trigger to completion? No. Will it stop me playing PS1 Final Fantasy Tactics to completion? No. Yes you can get a bigger handheld, say the RG351V....but a 1.2 GHZ computer in my pocket in a case alongside my wallet? Unbelievable.
All of the Colours😍😍, I think imma get the atom purp and the GC purp at some point. The screen is brilliant and bright for its size on top of that play out the box. So much on in tiny form factor, What an impressive device👌🏾 Thanks for an awesome video👍🏾
I got one of these because of your original video, and it’s amazing. I think this is the smallest possible screen that’s still playable, and the clicky low-travel buttons are surprisingly precise.
@@cagataycakmak2280 It was comfortable for me right from the beginning, but I’ve always liked small electronics. FWIW, I think it’s actually more comfortable than the actual GBA SP. The SP was chunky enough that you had to actually grip it in your hands, leading to strain after a little while. The Funkey is small and light enough, that your grip doesn’t need to be as firm. You can kinda just rest the Funkey on your fingers while pressing buttons with your thumbs. However, this makes the shoulder buttons kinda suck because you have nothing to brace the Funkey against when you press them in unless you do the SP mega-grip again. Kinda hard to explain, but in any case, I’ve found it very comfortable.
controls and comfort aren't as bad as you'd expect. I managed to get a time under 1 hour on my first playthrough of celeste classic(gba port, pico 8 emulation is still being worked on) on this without taking a break.
That is unfortunately the case for many of these handhelds, even properly sized ones. People are way too spoiled of choices these days, they end up owning like 10000 games on their pocket in multiple devices and not playing any of them.
Pretty impressive. One question though, does the Fun Key S already come preloaded with games already installed or do you need to download the games. If downloading the games how do you do that and how hard or easy is it do that? Thanks.
I have one of these and it's great. Just be aware that you definitely shouldn't be using it as a keychain. It will get scratched up badly. It's built well, but anything that size is going to be reasonably delicate
While I also wish EVERYTHING came with USB-C these days in the case of this device I completely understand why it didn't. USB-C is just TOO BIG to fit! I mean, if you think about it, you would have to make the bottom of the device about 10% thicker/larger AT LEAST just for that one change! P.S. - I love my atomic purple FunKey S WAAAAY more than my Pocket Sprite. I have easily surpassed the hours I played on my PS with the hours I've played on my FKS. I got both when they originally launched so that says a lot!
There's not enough Atomic Purple in the world. Ever since I got my very 1st GBC that was Atomic Purple when they first released I've been in love with that color. I even got a custom Atomic Purple shell for My Nintendo Switch.
when you lower resolution on a device, the fps goes up considerably. so that probly has alot to do with the performance given the size and resolution at play.
There actually is a pocket emulator smaller than the Funkey S called the Pocketsprite, although it has very limited specs and doesn't have the same number of emulator options.
@@jensinamart5153 I knew both funkey can fold thats why its small and the other which u r saying can't be fold its also not having this much variety of game So i like this one only and you
Gotta be honest, the 50hz screen is a total dealbreaker for me. I somehow didn't catch that detail in the original campaign, but if I had I wouldn't have backed. It's a cool novelty and I'm sure a lot of other people will love it, but 60hz SNES, GBA, etc games with 1/6 less frames is SUPER noticeable to me and ruins my experience.
I don't understand the obsession with usb type C. Don't get me wrong usb C is good but micro usb works absolutely fine and in the case of these handhelds performs exactly the same. Literally everyone has a micro USB cable somewhere and if it comes with one in the box then who cares what type it is.
It's a cool novelty but kinda wish they just made a device the same size as a SP. Real talk, staring at a 1 inch screen for extended periods of time is going to wreck your eyesight.
For people who aren't gamer and tech savvy this thing is a pain in the arse to get games on. I bought 2 off of kickstarter and just got them in. This weekend my re-re self needs to figure how tf I'm going to get my favored games in here.
I love my Funkey S. I got the atomic purple version and it just looks cool. I've had no problems with any emulation either. Such a good little product.
I can't help myself Brandon, I'm going to have to buy every colour. I've got the OG GameCube and the gray colour. It must be done. Big thanks again lad. You know, with all the product you shown me, you've never actually steered me wrong in a retro purchase. I can't say that about some of the newer channels.
You also usually have your smartphone with you, and there is the "Zero 2" gamepad ". That would be a nice alternative. However, you would need a really good multi-emulator with ready-made games in it. Or just download individual games or packages in the app. Is there such a thing? Just as easy to use as this device, but as an app for Android.
This looks like it's perfect for getting your kids into retro games. I always wanted to get my kids (If I ever have any) into older games first so they would be greatful for the classics
It looks okay. But I have big-ish hands for someone who is 5'5. But it's too small and looks like it can break easily. And I'm sorry. But playing Super Mario 64 on that doesn't look easy.
the vertical screen is wack, especially if you're trying to play GBA games. Also, the battery life is caca, ive read slightly over an hour. pretty bleh...
That looks like it’d be really nice but my hands are to big. They’ve cramped over things that are bigger than that so sadly I’ll have to pass on that even if I do love the design of it
@@joelmiller6849 My fingers are also big along with my hands lol, so it’s more than just my grip because sometimes the buttons are kinda annoying to press if they’re to small
I really, really wish it had usb-c. That would make it perfect. As it is, it's only so portable in my life if it needs an extra cable I don't use for anything else, you know? The community aspect is amazing, though. Gaming has always been perfected by fans.
I wish they made a full size clamshell out of this similar to the Powkiddy V90. I like my V90 but sometimes find the screen too small. This Funkey S looks like it has a great build quality and excellent front end with emulation station already. I would buy this device if it was cheaper (can't justify to myself spending $80 on another retro handheld I won't use).
Ordered two back in November and still haven't gotten them yet. The claim is they ran out of the color I chose, yet I chose two different colors. I would hold off on ordering until people start to actually get them who aren't influencers or who live in China. I will update when I finally get at least one of the two or are given some shipping information at all except "they're coming".
So as someone who’s new and doesn’t want to screw anything up with emulating, is there a way I can emulate any games from the systems available? I mainly just want to play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance but I need to know for sure before I get one myself
I just bought one for the library of games it comes with! I’m hoping they make a bigger one in the future, id gladly pay for another one if it was bigger
@@RetroDodo But where exactly? I have seen one on github, it says something about DOS on it that is a Repository for the FunKey project. Is that the one?
Fun fact: The famously awful E.T. game for the Atari 2600 actually sold more than its most famous game, Space Invaders. E.T. sold 1.5 million, while Invaders only shifted a million.
No, no USB-C, but remove the port and add wireless charging on the bottom. Come on, it is 2021; all portable devices should support wireless charging....
@@RetroDodo A lot of people say something like that when I request wireless charging, but isn't it sort of an illusion that wireless charging is a premium feature artificially created phone manufacturers trying to charge a premium price? I mean, Nexus 7, a $229 tablet back in 2013 had wireless charging. Usually, as time passes, technology gets cheaper. And I could buy wireless charging receiver for phones for $1~2 from AliExpress. I had bought one and opened it to see what's inside. Just some coil and a very thin small circuit. Judging by that, I would say that adding wireless charging would not cost more than $1 for manufacturers.
if someone made a thing this small this powerfull, how nice would it be if someone made an SP sized equivalent or even better because the performance could scale
With the component supply chain issues in China at the moment I would imagine orders placed now wouldn't be fulfilled until June at the soonest, but hopefully things improve. If you had any questions about the device or wanted to chat with other backers about it, the FunKey Community Discord Server is abuzz: discord.gg/G9kCvjg.
this is so disappointing! The system looks amazing, and it's exactly what I'm looking for, but nearly every electronic I've owned with a micro USB charging port has broken on me. They're so fragile, and eventually just stop being able to charge. If they ever release a version with a USB C port, I'm first in line.
The interface and attention to detail for an out of the box experience alone makes me severely hope they'll make a "normal sized" version of it. I've had mine for a few weeks now, and am loving it - but a normal sized version of it would just be perfect. One thing I hope they'll fix in a future firmware: I'd love them to remember that I like to play games "scaled" instead of "stretched". Having to set that after each sleep-mode or game start is a bit of a drag. But otherwise... I love it.
