So... Slim Phatty or Sirin? I do not know what to buy. Phatty seems to have outdated VST (missing) and Sirin has advanced VST support with patches. What would you recommend for DAW use? I must say i like Phatty more but lack of VST scares me. MIDI is fine but can be problematic. Any ideas?

Thanks for watching! Never had any experience with the SIRIN unfortunately. I can only share my thoughts on VST integration in general; while I'm not using it much in my own work, it's absolutely great when producing more commercial content. I use Digitakt and Digitone via Overbridge and it's absolutely great. Maybe some other viewers can chime in?

@mikelo303 please, I don't want to be rude here, but why do you want to use a VST when you are going to have a Moog in your hands? if you want to use VSTs then buy VSTs, bet there are some great quality emulators out there like the arturia's or native instruments. CHEERS MATE!

@@berval5948 the vst for sirin/minitaur is just for control, not standalone sound generation. it lets you use a ton of under-the-hood features. however it's super buggy. re: sirin, it's the most beautiful sounding synth i've ever heard and i'm so happy i bought it early. there's one on reverb now for €850 but that's the lowest i've seen in a while. most are around 1000-1200 now. there are some for 1600 even but that's never gonna sell.

@@LateNightBeatsOfficial tried to tag you below but couldn't so: i own the sirin and just bought the slim today (happy birthday me :) there is probably SOME overlap but ultimately two different synth engines. Taurus and Voyager (Model D, but i think it's more in line with voyager as I understand it). Either way, from what i've gathered these are both the "sexy", buttery, smooth side of Moog. bassy but not growly Sub series engine, or the retro leaning modular (mother series).

@@berval5948 you might want to rack the unit out of the way and control it via something else. This is one of many ways of working. We all work different, nothing wrong with vst.

Like with everything, it depends on what you expect from it. I've just bought one on ebay. I always wanted a Moog synth, I've played with Little Phatty in local music store some time ago, but it was always hard to justify the size of the keyboard versions and price for a relatively low feature set. I also had Moog Rogue back then, and to me Little Phatty definitely sounded like a Moog - the LP had more fidelity, and yet had loads of dirt and character. I got rid of it for the same reason actually, I loved the sound, but I could use the money for other things back then and it was just not very convenient. This thing however comes at the right price in a convenient rack sized package. Heck, I could buy a second one for that price, and it wouldn't be hard to find room for it. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE old school analog synths with hands on control - I'm actually in the process of building an ARP2600 clone (actually PCBs and the frontpanel alone for this project were more expensive than the Slimphatty with shipment), and will probably start making actual modular system after that. But this time I wanted a small affordable 'preset' box with killer Moog sound that I can put in a rack. First thing I'm going to do is initialise all the patches, probably won't even play factory presets, as I want to discover this synth on my own.

the little phatty was my first synth also. whilst sounding amazing, I didn't like having only 1 knob control so many parameters. however, I still have never found a synth with such a deep/strong bass that really rumbled my speakers like the little phatty did

Hi I watched this video before I bought my slim phatty and you sold me on it lol. I've always wanted one. A lot of my favorite artists such as EPROM use it and you confirmed it for me. PS I personally love the overdrive lol
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 7 лет назад
It all comes down to personal taste. I come from a guitar background, so I'm extremely particular when it comes to overdrives. I think it really works live, but I'd be extremely careful when tracking with overdrive in the studio, because whenever I did, I ended up having to re-record the part. I'm really happy to hear that you got it though. That's one synthesizer that I'll probably never sell :)

I'm glad to find these explanations about tunning ! Because when I bought it, I though my slim phatty got a problem. Then I find very fast the manual tunning, and I have ALWAYS a tunner in the slim phatty channel on ableton. Because when you're jamming, you often heard that it is not tunned anymore. At least, without warming it several minutes before (the manual instruction say to turn if ON 45 minutes before playing it). I have also difficulties to find a place in the mix for it. Honnestly I don't know why but it's very hard for me to put it in a track. Most of the time, I use DIVA instead. I have listened to a lot of Jan Blomqvist liveset, and he always has a Slim Phatty with him. I always wonder how : 1 - he does to mix this synth with others digital stuff 2 - he does for the tunning :) maybe if you put it ON 2 hours before the show in automatic tunning mode, that"s ok. Never test. Sorry if my english is not perfect, I'm french.
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 3 года назад
Yeah, tuning was a bit of an issue for me as was placing it in the mix. For me, the phatty was the thickest sounding synth I’ve ever owned (better than the Sub Phatty even), so mixing it was a bit of an issue.

@@LateNightBeatsOfficial Great EP ! Very well produced. Yeah ok. Tomorrow, I'll try to turn it ON like an hour before playing it. In AUTO mode first. And your EP is very good, the bass is amazing. So I guess I just have to work on it :) For the moment I got it for several months and to be honest, I never put it on one of my track. When I have tried to use it, I always stop because of tunning issue mostly. And mixing issue too.

Thanks for the nice review. I'm right now struggeling with the desicion to buy one. I'm doing atmospherisch ambient/ melodic techno or neo classic music like Kiasmos, Two Lanes, Olafur Arnalds, Hania Rani etc. Many of them use such like the Sub 37 but even the sub 25 is too big for me to carry on stage. Right now I own the Minitaur but it feels a bit weak in the sub-base frequencies and it drives me crazy not to be able to store presets on the machine. Can I get more nice warm sub bases out of the Slim Phatty?
@axymoulm

Regarding the LFO: If I remember correctly, the LFO is even unipolar. When I had one I couldn't really get these funky vibratos which are shifting oscillator pitch slightly up AND down. I think the Phatty LFO just shifts above but not below zero. Regarding bass sounds: I loved single-oscillator bass sounds with glide on the Phatty but bass using both oscillators is not a Phatty's thing because of the drift between both oscillators which emerges very soon in a rhythm. This drift was causing me gradual losses and gains of low end volume. It was very uncomfortable to sort out and replace weak tones after recording. All together I'd buy a digital oscillator-based synth if ever again.
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 2 года назад
Interesting take, it's true that phasing caused by drifting can influence your low end, that's why I'd typically use one oscillator for the bass and the other one tuned an octave or two higher for a bit of definition in the sound.

Analog will always be temperature sensitive unlike DCOs. The Little Phatty internal design/routing seems in the spirit of the Minimoog.
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 7 лет назад
Correct :) I guess we're living in a very demanding time: we want the warmth of the analog oscillator and the stability of the DCO; just a heads up from my end that these OSC tend to drift sometimes.

@ubiquitousreverser

Hey, thanks for posting this. I am considering the Slim phatty myself and I'm guessing since you didn't mention it that you don't have any issues with how the knobs can give a jerky adjustment to match the preset parameter with the position of the knob when you go to move it. Moog introduced RAC- real analog control to the tribute edition of the little phatty, b/c a lot of people complained about that sudden jerk to the sound when they go to change a parameter from a preset after loading it. I know you said you ussually start from scratch, but just thought I'd ask if you really ever had any issue with that being annoying. I have a sub phatty so, aside from the slim's warm up time I'm not sure if I'll find myself bothered with that as I do tend to explore when I create patches, and then just load the patches later when I record. But I'd hate to think I'll be recording and want to tweak a parameter, forget about that hiccup and get blasted from a sudden response during play. Thanks again and cool setup!
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching. Sorry for a delayed response. I have no problems whatsoever with the knobs working in that "takeover mode". Because you see the LED suggesting where the knob position is, you can smoothly "glide" over it and activate the pot. I wish more synths had that LED architecture: it's brilliant.
@ubiquitousreverser
@ubiquitousreverser 6 лет назад
Ahh, so you can select when the pot/knob is active and not active! That is cool. Thanks for the response, and for making the great content!
@jansonrawlings8169
@jansonrawlings8169 7 месяцев назад
Old comment, but the tribute edition wasn’t created to fix any issues with the phattys. The tribute was in fact the very first version of the little phatty. Stage i and ii came afterwards. The difference between the tribute and stage is aesthetic as well as a lowered noise floor in the stage edition. The tribute had a design flaw where certain components were too close to others and introduced a high pitched noise. Moog acknowledged that issue and serviced the tributes for free for a time. Stage i and ii were identical, save for the USB over midi found on the stage ii.

@@jansonrawlings8169 Ah. Well, I went w/a Roland System 1m. I had gone too long w/out an analog poly and it was SOO Cheap! Was going to just hop back to the xd module, over another Mono, but I had the Sys1 keys for a minute, and though I found the filter knob to easy to be jerky under my hand, I loved it’s depth, and it has more upfront and it kills for my taste in 80’s analog, compared to the xd in it’s up front feature set and controls, where it lacks in patch mem, & the whole programmable OSC on the XD, it makes up for in it’s own feature set, esp in the 1m module version, can pass ext audio through the modeled filters, efx, LFO, and patch w/other modules. Maybe one day I get another 0-Coast. Love your channel, cool you got back to me and educated me some more. I enjoy learning synth and esp Moog Synth HISTORY!

Hey HalutioN! Im a saxophone player and I wonder if I can control the slimphatty with an AKAI EWI. The upside playing with an EWI is the posibility to control the notes in a creative way. Would be really cool if I could do this with an EWI :)
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 6 лет назад
I actually tried that with a CASIO DH500 horn and yes, you can control it with a wind controller. It wasn't the most musical experience ever, because in order to take full advantage of the Slim's potential, it'd be good to have it send CC's for filter, vibrato etc. and as far as I know, the EWI doesn't send those and they're not configurable. On the upside, the sound of the oscillators on the Slim would lend itself really well to a sax-inspired feel.
@TooSlowTube
@TooSlowTube 6 лет назад
Toto Kruse, I think your best bet would be a MIDI->CV converter. The EWI can send different things, but they're all just Breath, relabelled as something else - e.g. Expression or Aftertouch. You could spend quite a bit on modular stuff if you get into it though. E.g. you could use a linear CV mixer, and a Precision Adder or two, to change how the Breath controls pitch and the filter... The basics are convert a CC you can send to a CV, then you can control at least the filter with it, as well as sending notes. You could just use a cheap MIDI splitter cable to feed the MIDI->CV stuff at the same time as the synth, or use MIDI Through from the synth. Either should work. Adding other stuff, like a mixer, or just an attenuator, makes it easier to control how much response you get. With an adder, you can do "Key Follow" too, though it's possible you can do that directly on the synth... On my Korg Odyssey module, using filter CV overrides that, so you'd need the adder to do it.

How do you think it compares to the Minitaur?
@LateNightBeatsOfficial
@LateNightBeatsOfficial 7 лет назад
I personally think, they're pretty similar. A couple of people say that the Slim packs a bit more punch than the Minitaur. When it comes to technical specs, I believe the Minitaur is octave-limited to the lower range, whereas the slim has a higher octave range. From a functionality standpoint, an LCD with easy, hardware-only preset saving is the main advantage for me.
