Thank you at last a good honest review , I have owned this model Range Rover Sport on a 62 plate for 5 years and I absolutely love it , it’s been totally reliable and faultless , OK I admit servicing by a main dealer is expensive but it proves if they are serviced properly they are reliable .
@HighPeakAutos

chris powell Thanks for the comment! I love them too. They’re no less reliable than any other complicated luxury car but they get a bad reputation. If you look after them they won’t let you down but too many people don’t bother taking them to the main dealer or in fact anywhere to have them serviced. What do they expect when it breaks!

@davidellis279
@davidellis279 5 лет назад
Dave Partner , You have to realise you have an 11year old vehicle and unless it has been serviced and maintained regularly you are asking for trouble buying one,I had a Range Rover Sport TDV8 3-6 Diesel that also was an 07plate,I chanced buying it because it was cheap and I have the facility's to repair it,when I sold it the mileage was 143,000 and I had done about 20,000 miles in it,the only thing I had to replace in that time was front brake pads and a suspension compressor which I had reconditioned for £150-00 and fitted it myself,buying these vehicles is a gamble and can be very expensive to maintain,a lot of people who buy them can't afford the repairs and should think very carefully before purchasing as major components like engines and gearboxes are horrificly expensive,I was lucky with mine.

Land Rovers are generally speaking, very reliable vehicles I have found. However, like all 4x4 vehicles they do need (and must have ) more servicing than an ordinary family car. Truly speaking I would call them an enthusiasts vehicle and benefit highly from 'pro-active' maintenance. For example issues with air suspension. The air bags are made of rubber and like all things rubber they wear over time so I replace then every 5 yrs whether they are working correctly or not. They cost £60 each so not a fortune and are a very easy fix - 15 mins each - plus the compressor has a wear part that should be replaced at the same time - cost £15. With that work done, 99% of all air suspension problems will be avoided.

High Peak Autos in your experience which 4wd has been worse? I like land rovers, but they are just hard work. Go to change a discovery auto box oil filter, oh have to remove exhaust and cross member. Own a 2009-2012 5.0l Range Rover, your timing chain tensioner will fail, it will. And to stuff this up after the 4.0 and 4.2 problems is crazy, yeah that was jaguar, but LR should have know. I’m not saying land rovers are bad cars, or incredibly unreliable. But they are below average in regards to reliability, they are more trouble than they should be, the question is are they worth the trouble? Talk to an Indy car mechanic who works on a good selection of cars, he won’t have nice things to say about any modern Land Rover. Yeah I know all cars have there problems, but Land Rover do excel. Edit, again I quite like the sport, looking at buying a 5.0 supercharged, but I don’t kid myself, I will be changing the timing chain, sprockets, tensioners and fuel injectors, add to that that the suspension bushings ain’t last in off road use, not a problem, just extra maintenance. When you come from jap cars, you know it just doesn’t have to be this way.

Hi! The supercharged V8 in this model is awesome (510BHP!!) Most Range Rovers over here are diesel, they're more popular. Probably because our fuel costs about $8 a gallon. A sunroof in a Sport is a rare optional extra in the UK - they hardly ever have them. I'm a big fan of the full size RR - I think I've got one coming into stock next week so I may do a video with it :)

But I'd always wanted a RR Sport so I took the leap. Today my Rover has 110,000 miles on it and I haven't had ANY issues at all. The thing is amazing. I say if you want one, buy one, but get a good past service history check like I did. It took me several months to find my particular Rover Sport, and I haven't regretted my purchase at all.

And now the new car 2 years on is probably halved your money…. Meanwhile the Range Rover would have probably been worth close to what you paid 2 years on (thanks to covid prices) but without would have probably deprecated around £2000-£4000, compared to £6000-£10,000 depreciation on a new car in 2 years.

TDV6 has crank bearing failure problems. I’ve had it happen on two of them. Land Rover want around 14k to fix. Good engine builder will want around 7k. Even with extremely methodical maintenance you can’t guarantee it won’t happen. Main dealer service intervals will almost guarantee it will. When it does replace the turbo’s because they most likely will be shot and have it poly bushed while the body is off. Save you constantly replacing bushes. Not a cheep car to run but fantastic when working well. Oh forgot to mention Gearbox will go 2.5k to fix and air suspension pump will also eventually go!
@HighPeakAutos
@HighPeakAutos 5 лет назад
Hi, I've had a few comments about the crank bearings failing. Fortunately Ive never had that happen to me so I wasn't aware of it It annoys me when there is obviously a common issue and the manufacturer won't do anything about it as a recall etc... The new 8 speed box is much more reliable than the previous ones, Ive never had any issues with that. I did mention having all auto boxes serviced at 80-100k (which is something I do religiously) to extend the life of it. They are great cars, but not without their issues. Just like any other used car really.

A sudden move from one end of the country to another necessitated in the purchase of a 4x4. Wasn't interested in getting one but the area is very rural and gets crazy snow, so I had to dive in. Looked at the usual suspects then ventured into a RR. Immediately struck by how nice it felt inside the cabin, so started researching. Came across all the usual horror stories and was, frankly, terrified. Ended up buying a 2001 P38 Vogue 4.6V8 (with the later Bosch electronics) and kept my fingers crossed. Four-and-a-half years later - 60,000 miles later - it has NEVER let me down. I've done the usual running cost maintenance but it has been turn-key reliable. Admittedly, I have only ever owned classic cars (vehicle prior to this was a Porsche 928S4 - you want fun and games, get one of them!) so am maybe a bit more expectant of niggles coming and going but, frankly, have never driven something that has been so nice to waft around in. Comfy, effortless. If you have a 5 hour journey ahead, you want to do it in something akin to a Gentleman's Club. Now looking at either a newer Vogue or Sport. I refuse to go diesel so will only consider another V8 and do wonder if the diesels are a bit less reliable? Who knows! All I know is this: 1) I absolutely have to have a 4x4 where I live and, 2) I like a comfortable car. To me, the only option is a Rangey.

Ah, High Peak Autos. They gave me good advice a few months ago on here, that literally paid off. Cheers very muchly.. I switched over from an 05 TD4 to a 2011 SD4 and five months down the line I still struggle to get used to driving it. I guess I am thinking about it all too much and worrying. I feel like a mere accessory in the vehicle. Plus there is no where to rest my left arm. Despite the manual FR 2 having drivers armrests. How odd the auto doesn't have one. Anyway after 35 years of driving manuals I will endeavour to soldier on with the SD4. Your advise was spot on. TD4 is the strongest gearbox for a manual and SD4 the strongest for an auto. My Sport LE has only done 49k so no worries for a while yet I hope. I located the auxiliary power sockets but cannot get the tyre inflator to run off them with or without the engine running and it works if plugged into the TD4. So I will check the fuses under bonnet F45 15 amp. It claims it has a cigar lighter but I have yet to locate that either in the handbook or the car. All good fun. Sold without a spare wheel and tyre. WTF is all that about? There is room for one in the boot too. I had to source one off eBay and the wheel doesn't match the ones on vehicle. Do L R let them leave the factory with no spare now? Is that the same for all their vehicles? What next they leave the steering wheel off to save space? :0)
@HighPeakAutos

@@HighPeakAutos Cheers for reply. That is insane re no spare wheel.. I am trying to find the cigar lighter socket on a Freelander 2 Sport LE 2011. I can see the two power sockets on the centre console between the seats but they aren't the cigar lighter and the tyre inflator I am trying to run will not work off of them, checking the fuse is next on the list. Tyre inflator works when plugged into my other vehicles cigar lighter. The cigar lighter is mentioned in the handbook, but only in the index. All this because I want to pump up the spare wheel and tyre I had to source off eBay because some cretin decided to manufacture a vehicle with a spare wheel foot well area and no damn wheel. Freelander 2 2.2 with mine having 19" wheels. Not easy to change after a puncture unless you adopt a certain knack I discovered where I hold the wheel up in the correct position for the studs between my inner things. Never ever place my legs under a jacked up vehicle without an axle stand and or spare wheel underneath in case the jack lets me down. Oh of course I haven't got a jack either. Had to use a trolley jack Grrrr!! :0)

I recently bought a Range Rover sport 5.0 supercharged MY11, this in spite of being aware of timing chain issues and the plethora of problems that everyone keeps telling me about. I like that it's heavy, that it moves when it wants to, this is not a vehicle to be throwing around corners either. I have the service records and even though it's low mileage it has had a water pump and air conditioner compressor replaced. One thing to learn is that with the amount of technology packed into these vehicles (at the time) it is bound to fail. Did I buy it for fuel economy? No, I bought it because as you said in another video, I got "Range Roveritis". Good job on the videos! And hello from Victoria BC!.

I've had my 2011 TDV6 for just over 3 years now (put 34k miles on it), agree about the "crashy" ride. Mine came with nice looking 20" wheels which I upgraded for a set of 15-spoke 19's which are readily available as many fools will swap for the stupid 22" variety. The 19's just make it a little less 'fidgety', but handling is almost identical, they still look good too. Regarding reliability, mine came with a Marshall full warranty, which I've renewed each year since. £340, payable monthly, is well worth it. Claims so far have totalled around the £1500 mark. Suspension compressor, MAF sensor, and instrument cluster (LED rev counter needle backlight failed). Own pocket expenses include servicing, front suspension arms as one of the bushes went- better to change the whole set, £650, and gearbox flush, £350. Fuel consumption is ok, around 31mpg measured, nearer 35 on the computer. Fuelling this thing does hurt with our ridiculous prices in the UK, and the £540 'road tax' stings too. Otherwise, it's a good all rounder.
@HighPeakAutos
@HighPeakAutos 5 лет назад
Simon The Impaler The £105 to fill the tank and the high tax does hurt! But that aside, they’re great. The previous owner of mine put the larger 21” on and ruined the ride. I agree 19”S would ride much nicer. I know you’ve mentioned a few repairs, but I think on any used £70k cars you may have had similar issues so they do get an unfair amount of flack. Cheers for the comment 👍
@PhatSimey
@PhatSimey 5 лет назад
Mr High Peak, I concur, the fuel and road tax are the biggest downsides for me. All other things being equal, the cost of repairs and maintenance are about what I expected when I bought mine. Big heavy cars need big heavy parts, which ultimately will cost more. My input was to try and give folks a real world example of the costs involved, hope it's been some help! My machine has 75k miles on the clock now, so getting to that point where things will start to need replacing. Overall though, from my experience, the RRS does receive more than it's fair share of flack! PS Like your video too 👍

Thanks for the video! Many videos are jumping on the bandwagon to just say that land rovers are unreliable. TBH, parts do break down, but so does other cars, and as owners we have to do our due diligence before buying a pre owned one, so pre inspection is one safer way to go. I had my 2011 RSS from new and annual road tax is expensive, a whopping $4400(usd), still chose my RRS because other brand of Suvs doesn't have the feel this car can give, either rough terrain or highway cruising, or simply sitting in it. It's either you love the brand, or hate it and avoid, no in-between.

jaykayelle2 thanks for the comment! I completely agree. I deal with cars all day long, and once you realize that all cars break down, it doesn’t put you off any one particular model or brand anymore. Every expensive luxury car will cost more money to run than a Corolla - it amazes me that some people are shocked by this fact. I love the LR brand, and I certainly don’t think they deserve the reputation they unfortunately have. They’re no more unreliable than a Mercedes, BMW or Audi 👍
