I've gotten hundreds of those things in the past year. I pay them no mind. I figure that at best they're going to run me in circles and waste my time chasing something that doesn't exist, and at worst, somebody is up to no good. I saw an old ad for Sears Roebuck. It was from 1906. It said "We do not have salesmen. Persons claiming to be our representatives are swindlers" Refreshingly blunt and to the point eh? Nothing new under the sun.

Expensive guitars are like a certificate of achievement. It's like you've given yourself a little pat on the back for having had a good year. I don't own many top drawer instruments, but those I do have are lovely to play and sound great. But then again, so are my cheap Harley Bentons. The high end guitars, though, are more of a representation of life turning out how you hoped. Just my two penneth.

Hi Colin, I've been primarily a Les Paul player for 30 years, a few years ago I owned no less than 4 Gibsons plus an American Tele. I've since sold them off and have been having a lot of fun with the new Epiphones. I currently own 3 of them. I no longer play live and only record occasionally (on friends projects). They're all great guitars, and it's really nice not worrying so much about the occasional nick or scratch. Greetings from the US! ✌️🎸

Special guitars, regardless of price, make you play better because they bring out emotional playing. I have a partscaster that’s the best Strat I ever played & everyone that touches it agrees. I have 3 LPs that are Frankenstein’s and two of them are magical. Each make me play differently because they each have their own voice I for one thought you played some of your best on that 54 reissue. It’s a good one man, if it makes you play like that, it would be sad to let that go. It’s not the guitar we sometimes sell, it’s the emotion it gave while playing we regret selling.

I bought a $87 “Donner” brand Strat copy the day I retired in 2018. During the pandemic I bought 10 other guitars ( since money was burning a hole in my pocket because bars and restaurants were closed). With all the time in the world to learn and practice I learned the Major church modes and can jam with most songs that come on the radio. Here’s the most important lesson I have learned. A guitar will play the exact same notes no matter the price $.

Law of diminishing returns. 10x the price doesn’t get you 10x the function, but if you choose wisely, it could be twice as good. Beautiful guitar! I was in the market for a 2nd hand Gibson Studio. Had found one, my mate does a bit of buying and selling, went and spent an afternoon playing the Gibson LP Standard. It was a beaut! Went home to count up the pennies ready to buy the beauty! An advert appeared on Facebook for a Cort Gold Top. Being just down the road I went to have a look. Spent a couple of hours jamming with the seller. Yes, it came home with me! To me, it was WAY better than the Gibson LP. Took it to my mate to check out. "A lot of guitars for the money versus a guitar for a lot of money..." a perfect summing up of the problem. I am relatively new to electric guitar so affordable guitars give me a chance to try out different guitars to see what they feel and sound like, and if I like them. I recently bought an Affinity Telecaster and discovered, much to my surprise, that I am a Tele guy. Now that I know I like them I would be more confident spending more money to buy a better one....

You ask - MY short answer: YES! I had a collection of 8 „affordable“ guitars from Epiphone because of my „hunt for all classic Gibson designs“. In the end 75% of my playing time I used my Gibson R8 Les Paul and my Gibson ES 335. The Epi‘s (Firebird, Korina Flying V, Korina Explorer and some Les Pauls) were all great guitars but I personally feel more inspired by playing the Gibsons. And YES I feel that my playing is better when I am inspired in this way! You show very well in your videos how good those Epiphone‘s are and I 100% agree. And because of the fact these guitars deserve to be played more I decided to sell them all - were gone within 2 days for a good price 👍 For a big part of the incoming money I bought my “last” dream guitar - a 2014 Gibson R6 Goldtop with P90😊 - amazing guitar😮 Is it 10 times better than one of the Epi LPs? No - not 10 times but definitely another world! I couldn’t agree with your final thoughts of the comparison between the Gibson and the Epi Special TV Yellow! The Special was one of the guitars I sold and I really think that it made a massive difference how and what you play, because I noticed a huge difference in my own comparison! Here is my longer opinion to your question - and my personal thoughts: - It‘s the decision everybody must make on his own: - Do you love great guitars and have the money for it - buy it! - Do you love to have various models and play them all - go this way! Sorry for the long post! Thanks a lot for your fine videos, Colin! Keep the Goldi ! Greetings from the Germany! 😎🎸

I bought my first Les Paul Custom in 1975. Beautiful wine red. The feeling it gave me was something incredible. I think the big attraction for the more expensive guitars, is that they somehow make you play them. It's kind of weird. You see the guitar on it's stand and it just seems to pull you toward it to play. You don't really get that with cheap guitars. I think getting an expensive guitar can motivate some people to play it a lot more!

@itsalwayssomething7490 Год назад
I think it depends. Some people buy one guitar and just play that constantly. Some buy the expensive guitar simply because they can afford to, but they don't really play it. It's more a thing they want to start getting into, and think they should have the best to start with. Some buy as an investment and they are thinking about the future of the guitar and the value it will have later, so they end up not playing it much in fear of reducing that value by damaging it. Sometimes people spend so much time lusting after something and when they get it, the thrill of the chase is gone, and they no longer have a desire to play it. If you are inspired to play guitar, that comes regardless of the price of the guitar. Expensive is in the eye of the beholder. In the early 90's, $1000 for a guitar was expensive for me. Now, $3500 is the expensive guitar. But at this point, there isn't a big difference between a $1000 guitar and a $3500 guitar. My Les Paul isn't $2500 better than my PRS McCarty SE. It's really what guitar inspires me to play and it all depends on what kind of music I'm in the mood to play at that moment. I want to jam on blues, I pick up my Strat. I want to play rock, the LP or McCarty. I want to play metal, the Ibanez, etc.

No older ppl basically from what I've seen in ever case, isn't find one to go against my argument, they're here to share the passion for the thing they're doing. The 89 yr old grandma who plays Skyrim is there cuz she loves it. Young ppl are doing the guitar thing for free guitars and pedals and clout. Such a lucious sound. There is definitely something about them. It may be completely psychosomatic, but I love the Gibson USA versions. The Epiphones are good as well, but not quite as delicious. That being said, if it brings you joy, keep it, if it doesn't, pass it along.

I had a phase in which I bought a lot of rather cheap guitars. It was never as satisfying as buying a high-priced guitar. The cheap ones came in cardboard boxes. No slow opening of a (usually great smelling) case, no fine nitro lacquer. It was a short "high". I have now sold a few guitars again and only buy "expensive" guitars (but that may well start at £1000). It can also be cheaper. My 2010 Gibson Melody Maker cost around £400 and is one of my main guitars. So I definitely tend to own less but more valuable guitars. And your Les Paul is fantastic. I would keep it. Thanks for the video Colin. PS: I am not a lawyer, a dentist or a wealthy man either 😉

@@BeantownToBigD Do you really think there's an extra $2,000 worth of craftsmanship in a Gibson USA LP over a stock Epiphone "Inspired by Gibson" LP??? I have to fight the LP a little, and don’t want to fight a guitar to get ideas out. I’ll use it for solos, or maybe a layered rhythm, but it’s never been my go to for songwriting. When I first started playing the difference between a cheap “beginner” guitar and a half decent instrument was huge. Now even the cheapest squire is miles better than what I started on. The quality proposition at the lower end of the market is infinitely better than it was. I bought a G&L ASAT classic tribute last year for £350 and I love it! So we don’t need to spend 3 grand for a decent guitar, but if it makes you feel happy, play more, feel more engaged etc then go for it, ‘cause I understand that feeling.

The 490T and R pickups sound great but I will replace them with a Classic '57 and Super '57 eventually, with Jimmy Page handwiring that will be my perfect LP and all that I need. To me the Gibson brand is worth the extra over the Epi when the extra is a few hundreds and not thousands. I love P-90s and am watching for a good deal on one of the Gibsons for around $1K or less. And BTW I got a Gibson SG Tribute on sale for $932 also. Again, mine was worth it.

This is a super awesome video, Colin! The most expensive guitar I own is my 2003 Epiphone Elite Les Paul Custom. I think I paid around $1,100 for it brand new. In 2003 that was a RIDICULOUS price for an Epiphone. But because I had fallen in love with the brand and I wanted something special, I bought myself the best instrument I could afford. I’ve never regretted it. But I’ve also never had the itch to buy anything more expensive. Like you said, I realize an expensive guitar won’t make me sound any better. I sound just as good playing my $1,100 Custom as I do my $250 used Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Yeah, it’s always a special feeling when I pull the Custom out and let it rip, but it’s just a guitar, like all my others. The price doesn’t make it (or me) any better. If you can afford something super high priced or if it’s something you’ve always dreamed of, by all means, buy it. But don’t think it makes you any better than the kid who feels lucky to have a $100 pawn shop guitar. Whether it costs $4,000 or $100, if a guitar makes you feel good when you play it, that’s what matters! CHEERS!

Hi Colin, great video as always! I have always been in love with the gibson les paul standard P90 gold top, and fortunately twice I had the chance to buy it but in every occasion at the end I bought something else. The first time a fender tele ultra won the contest (a gibson standard SG was also there) The second time the contest was between the gold top, a Gibson special tv yellow (I hate that color so much) and Yamaha Revstar standard (encouraged by Chris Buck and your review) I ended up buying the gibson special despite the color. I promised myself when I went to the shop that I would choose purely by the sound and lord that special sounds amazing. Now, two months later I don't pay attention to the the color, I just close my eyes I listen to those amazing P90s do the magic. I have to mention I replace the wraptail with a Schaller Signum Bridge otherwise the intonation is terrible. NOTE: if anybody wants to do the same don't forget to buy the imperial studs. The bridge comes with metric studs and they just don't fit in the gibson. Now I wonder if things would have been different if I tried a Gibson Les Paul R4🤔 but it's a lot of money Thanks!

I owned the standard version slightly thinner neck. I’m sorry I didn’t hold onto it, but you know how it goes! Great 👍.

Wow ur right in the end. This is your best jam. Great vibe. Superbe sound. Bit like Sweet Smoke, an obscure band in the early 70'. Incredible. And yes this guitar made u do it. Keep it bro.

That Outro was Sweet, Nice guitar maybe enjoy it for a while longer then make a decision, Sometimes things really tune in after being played for a bit. Been enjoying some of your shows for awhile now. Just wanted to say Thanks for sharing.

I completely agree. I bought a Gibson Les Paul many years ago. It is lovely and I still have it. Back then cheaper guitars were not what they are now. I've played guitars less than half the price of my Gibson recently which sound and play equally as well. The secret is the set up. On another note.. Good lord that SG is pretty!

Greetings from California USA. Your channel and especially today this video struck me as brilliant and important. So many RU-vid channels give the 8mpression that 5he only good instruments or electronics are the highest end vintage or custom shop giving many people the idea that anything less is rubbish. This is hardly the case as many high end expensive instruments are really not worth the money or perhaps the same brands more affordable lines can be nicer made or just have that special mojo that makes you want to pick it up and play. I'm thinking of wrapping my Les pauls strings next time I change them for a different flavor ! Thank you for sharing your love of guitars and your knowledge with us✌️.
