Here is some help on landing the 172 in VR Abeam the numbers, throttle back from 2200 to 1800 rpm, slow plane to 75 knots and hold Alt. Just before turning base, throttle to 1600 rpm flaps 10, set up for 500 ft per min decent. On base flaps 20 speed 70knots. You want to be 500 ft AGL on your turn to final, this is important for a stable approach. On final adjust speed to 65 knots, rpms to 1500 and leave flaps at 20 degrees. You can slow to 60 knots over the numbers with throttle at idle. The circuit is in 500 ft increments and it is important to manage your speed. Using 20 degrees of flaps for a normal landing allows you to manage your round out a little easier. Also if you want a more realistic 172 performance adjust the fuel to full and configure the plane to have a weight of carrying two pilots. The real 172 climbs at 750 to 800 ft/min. This gives you a little more time to make your turns at 500 ft increments.. Have fun in VR world, I use it all the time to do training and familiarization of unknown terrain. PS.. if you are going to get a pilots licence, it is far cheaper to buy a good computer and VR head set than to pay $200.00 an hr trying to learn the procedures such as power off emergency landings and flying under the hood..

First of all, love your channel. Just getting back in to flight sims after a few years away, and I find your videos to be informative and entertaining. I’ve noticed in all of the videos that I’ve watched that you do have a tendency to come in a little too fast in all of the landings that I’ve seen. Since you are doing some flying in real life, you’ll find that in your good landings, you’ll hear that stall warning horn buzzing at you as you touch down. You’ll find that by slowing the approaches down a little that you’ll be able to hit landing spot a lot easier. In real life, it can get a little worrisome when you find yourself floating down the runway while it disappears beneath you. It’s not a great situation to be in. Don’t be afraid to go around rather than force it on to the runway in those cases. Other than that, great vids, and thanks for sharing!

@WeirdWizardDave
@WeirdWizardDave 4 года назад
Yes, yes you should. Even with it's various issues VR is a transformative tech for Sims. Its a giant leap in presence and immersion in the sim. being the difference between watching a moving flat picture showing you the simulated world and stepping into that world directly. I fly helicopters in VR using just the VR motion controllers to operate the controls and it's a pure joy. Plus of course there are tons of other VR games and experiences outside the sim world but that is, I suppose, beyond the scope of the question posed here.

Just got a 2nd hand oculus rift for xplane 11. Incredible experience. Makes the cockpit come to life. Like many have commented, u really don't want to go back after using VR. The only thing I'll say is the rifts resolution is only *just* high enough for VR flight simming. Any lower and you won't be able to read the numbers on the dials and displays

I’m a pilot in real life (PPL) and I tried VR at a flight sim show at Cosford (in the U.K.). The biggest improvement is that I found it a lot easier to understand my position in relation to the airfield when doing a circuit. I think this is because it’s a lot easier to look around, look out of the side window, etc. I was impressed. But on the downside, the resolution was a bit blurry and it ended up making me feel sick. I expect that better headsets will eventually fix both those problems though.
@AusFlightSimmer
@AusFlightSimmer 4 года назад
Hi Ian, thanks for the comment. My first headset was an Oculas Rift CV1, with that headset I would agree with you. I have now upgraded it to a Rift S, and using for practice (circuit training) I find it helps. The resolution is much better than the Rift, and I find I can see all the instruments with no problem at all... Current student pilot myself ) Cheers
@TresTrefusis
@TresTrefusis 4 года назад
VR can make you feel sick. It's not due to the resolution, it's due to the fact that your brain feels like you're moving, but your inner ear does not and the dissonance between the two can cause a bit of motion sickness. I'm an avid daily VR user and thankfully I didn't have this problem, but if you do it can help to have a fan blowing on your face. That can trick your body into feeling like it's actually moving which can alleviate the motion sickness. It's important though, if you do get sick with VR and want to acclimate to it, do not force yourself to continue using it when you feel sick. What you are doing there is training your body that VR makes you sick and it will not get better. When you feel yourself getting sick, stop and take a break before getting back in. Overtime you can train your body to go longer in VR without getting sick. It's an amazing technology and I agree with some other commenters, after flying in VR I can't really go back to a flat screen, even with the lower resolution. Oh and I use an HTC Vive.

Great reviews, thanks. Re your flare - I'm not an instructor but went through the same problems early days - 1. Stabilised approach, GET THE SPEEDS NAILED, don't give yourself any excuses, get the speeds nailed. 2. Study and understand the aircrafts landing attitude from your seat (spinner level or a bit higher or just below the horizon for example) Keep your eyes looking at the far end of the runway during the round out. At the flare, bring the nose (yoke/stick) BACK BACK BACK (deny the touch down), don't let the mother land. 3. Don't hurry the touchdown, it's going to happen, be patient. Good luck. Foxbat, G-EOID, take a look at some of my vids. :-)

I hightly recommend for those who use Oculus ( any device) to download and install OpenComposite and OculusTray Tool ,with that programs you can run Xplane with out SteamVr and adjust properly the SuperSampling and turning off the ASW ( for unlock more than 45 fps ). This work for any simulator like Il2 Great Battles or DCS World.

Like you, my rig is starting to show it's age (3-year old build) but still handling the Oculus Rift OK with acceptable frame rates. In looking to upgrade my VR headset, one important headset spec you need to look at is the IPD or Interpupilary Distance acceptable range. My IPD is up there and I'm finding, for example, that the Rift S will not work for me. I would suggest that one should measure your IPD (phone apps available) to make sure your new VR headset will "fit" you. Thanks for another great video!

I am very glad that I found your video now, although I have subscribed to your channel for a long time ;-) I am just at the stage of purchasing VR equipment. The currently announced HP Reverb G2 and Oculus Quest 2 look very interesting. But the requirements for the equipment are certainly greater than with the older Rift S. Therefore, to start with, I think about buying a Rift S so that I do not have to invest in a computer for now. I am currently using: i7 8700K, 1080Ti, 32RAM. I know you are using (have used) the Rift S and therefore I have these three questions. - Is the image viewed directly in VR of better or worse quality than the presentation on the film? - Is the display of the cockpit indicators clearer when using the Rift S or do you still need to zoom in to see something? - Are you using oversamling with Oculus (ovr setting plugin)? I really hope that you will tell me something ... ;-)

Thanks for the fine video. I’ve got a gaming PC that’s new as of late 2019, and the specs look about right where you’ve posted. I’m not a gamer, but I’ve used PC flight sims since the first ones in monochrome or 4-color screens. (We’re talking 1985 here) I’m really interested in VR now. I’m flying X-Plane 11 and FSX with my young boys and I’ve got an adult son who’s interested in it too. I’ve been flying in real life for 30+ years and while most of it is in larger aircraft like 767’s and A320’s, I’m finding that there’s just so much to general aviation that I’ve not gotten around to. Let’s face it, there’s a lot of world out there that I just won’t be able to fly to in my remaining years. One of the things about it is that it’s the fun of flying, but without consequences. There are no flight violations, no danger, and no expense other than what I’ve already put into it. Going forward, there’s only the cost of running the computer. The realism has gotten so good, it’s just amazing. I have seen computer-based flight training come a long way since the late 80’s and early 90’s. I am a proponent of it, but it’s not everything. Still, I will say, there have been plenty of times where I’ve taken a short-cut in the PC sim, and it catches up to me big-time. And that’s when you say, “That’s why we don’t short-cut that way in the real-plane.” And that little tidbit of a lesson will be worth more than gold in the real plane.

It’s night and day difference on visual quality and being able to read and view the cockpit console in rift vs rift s and even between the rift s and the valve index. I fly with elite dangerous and the cockpit on the rift doesn’t compare to it on the index. It’s easier to read and the FPS is unparalleled at 120+ FPS that the index does by default unlike the rift s. Even 90 FPS makes all the difference, which the rift s can’t hit. Seated games like this tho, the external base stations aren’t needed and you can get away with the inferior tracking of the rift and rift s, but the rest of VR for room scale and standing games, you gotta have the external tracking for proper VR. Rift-s is a good cheap PCVR but if you’re going to spend it on a good headset and you’ve already dropped $1000 or more on your PC, take the leap and go index. You won’t regret it.

If you're considering VR, do yourself a favor and get a Rift S or Oculus Quest right now! That is: if your computer is up to spec. If you've got XPlane running smoothly in busy scenery with all sliders maxed out, you have nothing to worry about. If Xplane runs doesn't run too smoothly for you, you may want to check out Aerofly FS, which has low spec demands and runs buttery smooth on just about anything.. It'll give you an amazing VR experience which most of the time actually looks better than Xplane.. but it's also more limited in covered area, add-ons, weather, etc.. but what it does, it does very well! It's pretty much all I 'Fly' now on my Rift S, and it's amazing!

Nice job, demonstrating VR. Your speed to to high on crossing the end of the runway on approach. If you where to think of it , 1.3 Vso stall in landing configuration, as an approach speed, but during the round out abs flare you need to lesson that speed and get the nose to a flare attitude without climbing. You see this “outside” by looking down the runway to the far end. Timing speed reduction and flare is the technique. So no power approach your time to round out and flare is based on speed only no power. Where as if you keep power in on the approach you have to reduce power and pict up a little together to reduce speed. Power alone the done drops to maintain speed to stay in trim. So time being at stall speed close to the runway. If you are 1.5 vso on approach ok, just slow to 1.1 vso by the round out phase. Keeping your speed is “flying it on” and not great technique and can lead to porpoising landings. This is two years old, I am sure you have mastered landings at this point if you continued training. Learn where to look, what to look for and what to do about what you see is the key. Eventually you can learn when the airplane is ready to land looking totally outside. An airspeed indicator is just that, and indication .. we drive cars not focused on a Speedo, but looking outside. Take care

Now all you need is to spend around $4000 on a 6 degrees of movement racing/flying chair and you also get some of the movement there :) Up to 17 degrees to a side (pitch, roll and yaw) and dunno how much movement in front/back, up/down and left/right directions. :D If I had the money, I'd probably do it...

Twenty minutes of video failed to answer my number one question: Do you absolutely have to have binocular vision for VR to work, like in iMax, or is it just an up-close monitor that senses your movement, that you could see as you would the normal world?

Not really the video to be figuring that out, and every video describes it as it is, simply two screens that represent two seperate camera positions in games in order to enable depth perception.

Great review! For your round out, flare issues, you re carrying way too much speed. In rl the C172 especially R and S floats as hell. 65 lts should be target speed (correct with wind if needed), passing the threshold at 60 kts and you ll improve your landing. Ballooning and wasting runway are the results of extra speed. In real life, you can turn from downwind to touchdown with almost no power so don t carry extra speed.

Aus Flight Simmer Flight simulators are good for either instrument flying or for procedures. The one other thing I can think of that you might get benefit with is to practice crosswind landings and rudder usage while doing it. Trying to improve your flare on a flight sim is going to damage your real world flying in my opinion (and I’m a big fan of VR flight simulation). After having more than 200 hr of real world flying + something similar in GA simulation this is my firm opinion.
@captmulch1

@cbcdesign001
@cbcdesign001 4 года назад
It's not for me, VR just isn't ready. Those that like it are attracted to its immersive quality but I find its a bit blurry, this video is blurry for example, I cannot see the instruments clearly enough and those two factors are big cons for me. I will stick with my ultra wide until VR resolution is good enough to give me the sort of experience that matches the image quality I get on my 2D screen.

@TresTrefusis
@TresTrefusis 4 года назад
I would argue it's only just begun. The landscape is a very I retesting one right now. The reason your u see a lot of tech demo type things on the market right now is because people are writing the rules for VR as we speak. New engines, new interactions. Blade and Sorcery for example is a great representation of meele combat. Hotdogs horseshoes and handgrenades has perfected the way guns should be handled inVR and the real games are starting to appear now. Half-Life Alex is on the way and the new waking dead saints and sinners is amazing. It's such a cool place to be in right now. Like the birth of any new technology it will have it's struggles and take it's time finding it's feet, but I believe VR will change the world. These are just the clumsy first steps we are witnessing now.

Sorry but I think you are miles off the mark. VR is in its infancy and it will get better over time. At some stage sims like the new FS2020 due out later this year on a really good VR headset are going to provide an incredible experience. Many like me are just not buying into it yet because we want better resolution. Many experts say photo realistic VR and is probably 10-20 years away so it has a long way to go.
