You take out your brand new suit, slip it on and start to walk out the door.
As you do - you look at yourself in the mirror.
And that's when you notice the tack stitching is still on your suit!
You notice the lapels are sewn to the suit.
The vents are sewn together.
To your annoyance even the breast pocket is sewn up.
What about your pocket square!
“What the...” Is this some kind of tailoring practical joke?!
Today we're answering a reader's question about what the the stitching is that often holds pieces of a new suit or in some cases a new shirt together.
We'll look at some specific issues like:

Mike Jones this is a short conversation in the comments section of a blog post. This link points to the top of that thread, but you will see the post below a few with dates, comments and links. They tell a story of their own that after speaking with many people here in central L.A. it is nearly certain to me that it is time for people to remember what happened "LAST TIME" we went through times of "change". This one small decade included... ready for it... a full shift in consciousness... ( lol ) heard that before? This is easy to see how in less than 10 years, the entire US population had changed to a whole another "world": www.ascensionwithearth.com/2015/05/five-major-banks-plead-guilty-to-felony.html?showComment=1432263810811#c5931832185006301418

I don’t remove the stitching of the pockets I don’t intend to use, especially the lower front pockets of a coat. It will prevent fabric sagging and holds the shape of the garment better.

A seam ripper is probably one of the best (and cheapest) investments you can make for your wardrobe. I use it to remove price tags, stray threads, and everything you spoke about in your video. Great advice! However, I never remove the seams on my outside coat/jacket pockets (except the breast pocket). It keeps me from putting items in them and making me look more bulky than I already am.

Thank you so much for this explanation. I'm a woman but had to pick up a new jacket for my boyfriend before he got back into town because he won't have time before his meeting to do it himself. It's been many years since I have handled a brand new men's jacket (before the tack stitching had been dealt with). I'd forgotten all about tack stitching! So when I picked up this new jacket for him and was removing all the tags, I noticed the pockets sewn shut. And I couldn't remember if this needed to come out. For a bit of background knowledge, a great deal of women's clothing come with FAKE POCKETS! It is infuriating to no end! Women's dress jackets will often just have a flap on the front and no actual pocket. So when I was tidying up my boyfriend's new jacket, I had a flashback to when I bought a good ladies' jacket many years ago. But then I thought "No.... Men actually USE their pockets. I'm pretty sure this needs to be carefully cut open..." And away I soared to the internet for the answer! Thank you for this informative video that not only answered my question, but did so in a thorough and easy to understand manner.

I took a new sport jacket to my seamstress to be fitted. I was like "this jacket has no pockets" She was like: RIIPPPPP, "there you go, you have pockets." I actually didn't know about tack stitching. I went home and found new pockets on 4 jackets. Thanks for what you do Antonio!!!

I remember having the sleeve tag discussion with a hard headed friend, who was convinced it was there to show off the brand to others. He literally asked me, “well if its not supposed to be there then how will people know what brand is my jacket”.

April 2021 and I just bought a suit for my son who will be graduating in May. I wanted to know about the stitching in the back. I asked youtube and your video came up, thank you so much 😊 really appreciate it!

Back when I started using suits, I immediately cut open both the pockets and the back of the jacket, just because leaving them like that didn't make sense, and was later told by my mom what those stitches were for. Which makes it funnier for me whenever I see an older guy with the back of the jacket still stitched, since it was commonsense for a 13 year old me to remove them.

Very timely. I just had this removed on a breast pocket on a suit I purchased last year. I did not even know that it was secured until I went to use a pocket square. I then noticed that the lower jacket pockets were also stitched closed. I elected to leave those sewn shut as I do not use these pockets and feel that it helps the pockets lay smooth and neat looking. In the future, I will check these out when I purchase my next suit or sport coat. Thanks for sharing.

Real Men Real Style You are meant to keep your pockets stitched, it helps to maintain the shape of the suit. You shouldnt be using the pockets anyway
@D.C.22
@D.C.22 8 лет назад
+Henry Huish That is erroneous. If they weren't to be used---why would there be waste of time and money to put them in??? You should use them with "discretion". Wallets and keys and such bulky items shouldn't go into them. But notes, tickets, tissue....use the damn pockets!

I know it dosen't have much of a connection to the video, but I'd be really happy if I could get some advice. I'm a young guy and I'm going to a semi formal party next weekend, however I'm not sure about my outfit. I wanted to look unique and cool, so what I thought about wearing was a dark blue navy jacket with some bright grey-blue pants (You can clearly se they aren't supposed to match) I picked a classical white shirt and a red tie. I'm not sure if this is going to look really good or if I'm out in the woods, personaly I like it, but maybe you would disagree. Obviously you can't know a 100%, buy maybe you had a general idea.

Thanks for the nice video, I bought a blazer recently and it has red trim stitching, going around all the edges, and I don't mean the pockets or vent. Should I keep or remove? Not sure if this the design of the blazer but I can see the ends are loose when I look at the inside and the thread can be pulled easily. any advice?

Antonio I always remove the stitching from the breast pocket, but I usually leave the side pockets stitched up. I never use them. Do you? Can't really think of anything I'd store in the side pockets, since I use the interior pockets for my cell phone.
@Grabehn42

Reggie E Most people I know do, but if you don't use them and the stitches are covered there's no real reason to cut them, especially since that helps even more in keeping the shape.
