Hi Eleni! For REU personal statements I would really try to highlight all of your previous experience and what you have learned or gained from that experience. In addition, showing that you are eager and open to learn new things is always a plus :)

@@theLifeofGillI really want to apply to an REU program, but I don’t have much experience in the field I’m interested in. Should I still apply or wait until next year. I’m a freshman, by the way.

Hi Ella! I think that you are in a great place to maybe get some experience at your own college, then you can apply to an REU for the summer after Sophomore and/or junior years after you have more experience. You could reach out to professors to see if there are any open opportunities during this year so you could get experience on your campus.

@@theLifeofGill Thank you so much for your reply! I take it that REU programs are looking for students with at least some prior research experience? The ones I was thinking of applying to are also open to incoming college freshmen (which I am) so I wasn’t sure.

I think it all depends! REUs are for undergrads that need experience, so I would think that they are more so looking for the willingness to learn. If there are some for freshman I say go for it1 It could be good practice on applying and/or interviewing as well :) good luck!
