So...to eat or not to eat? That is the question! Some people claim there are benefits to not eating before your morning run. Is there truth to this? Let's talk about when it's OK to skip breakfast, and when it's a good idea to have a bit of a snack!
We'll touch on fat adaption as well, since runners who metabolize fats efficiently are often better at longer events like the marathon and ultramarathon! What's the effect of a carbohydrate meal on your running performance in the morning hours, and what is glycogen anyway?

At first I felt lack of energy when I went for a run on a empty stomach, but after some time I got used to it, my body adapted and now I prefer running in a fasted state. The more important factor is hydration.

This man is correct, and I know from experience by going into ketosis and messing around with carb cycling. You need to deplete all the glycogen stores from your muscles and liver before being able to use fat for fuel. This doesn't happen over night, but rather in 2-3 days by not consuming carbs, and really depleting your body of glycogen with high intensity workouts, preferably in the form of HIIT. When you physically and mentally feel like dog shit, you will know you are utilizing fat for fuel.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 3 года назад
Absolutely! Thanks for chiming in! Although I will add that we ARE using fat for fuel all the time, also during easy to moderate exercise, but our ability to do so is improved when we train it. And by depleting our carbohydrate stores we are "forcing" our bodies to rely more heavily on fat than it normally would when carbs are available. It comes with two main costs though, and they are two sides of the same coin: Our ability to use carbohydrate for fuel is decreased in proportion to our fat burning abilities, and that means our ability to perform high intensity work is also decreased somewhat. Would you agree?

I like your humble approach because no one has all the answers. You ask 20 people and you will get 20 different answers. Drs don't know it all. That's why it's called a practice. This is a great discussion. I run 4 days a week, anywhere between 3-10 miles per run. I intermittent fast on most days and typically run fasted for all my runs with the exception of anything over 10. On race (1/2 marathons and marathons) days I always eat and wonder if my fasted training is helping or hurting me on race day. I typically don’t bonk during the week and I do not steer away from complex carbs :). But admittedly, I do love nut butters and avocados : ). Thanks for bringing up the topic, I look forward to learning more. I am going to try your suggestion of bringing some gels on my longer runs to eat after an hour or so ;)
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 5 лет назад
I think the best approach is one of balance and "best of both worlds" probably. Carbohydrate supplementation during exercise makes it possible to hit a higher quality of training in terms of pace and intensity, while depleted runs will aid in fat metabolizing, but as I said - this has yet to be proved to actually affect performance positively. So if anything, a little bit of both will probably be the best approach.

I cannot function without eating before running. If I have breakfast more than an hour before running, I need a top up banana. It's never let me down.. I'm 10.5st, 5'11". I'm usually up for work at 4:30am. I'm currently a mid 18 minute 5k runner.
@richardmiddleton7770
@richardmiddleton7770 3 года назад
It really depends on the intensity of the run. For upto 75% max HR, conversational pace, you don't need fuel before or during. Anything higher and for longer than an hour you need carbs 3 hours before or gels etc. during.
@LifeLongRunner
@LifeLongRunner 2 года назад
Did 11 miles this morning with very little breakfast for the first time. Hydrated beforehand. My average pace went up 20 seconds even though my heart rate dropped below my training zone. I just had no energy to gear up and pick up the pace (running near 10-minute miles instead of my usual sub 8-minute miles!). Now I know I need breakfast as usual before my runs. A fasted/near fasted state run will work for others, but not me.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 2 года назад
Yeah it is somewhat individual, but bear in mind that there is a lot of day to day variation - and that the body adapts over time so if this was your first time doing a fasted run then it would make sense that it doesn't work well. Over time you might find that some days it's fine, and that your body adapts somewhat to it over time. Also, HR is lower in the morning, and particularly if glycogen stores are low from the day before. That said, I'm in favor of having a small breakfast before runs that are longer than one hour. Personally I even have a banana before runs of only 45 min. So yes, if you find that you prefer a small breakfast before running then definitly do that. As I explained in the video there isn't really any great benefits from running without breakfast and the risk is probably greater than the reward over time.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge in this video. I've been getting into jogging & running over the past few months, and have been trying to figure out why I end up feeling physically tired, and sometimes sleepy, about 2 hours or so after exercising. I usually do a combination of fast walking, jogging, and running early in the morning, about 30 minutes to one hour after I have woken up. I do 4 miles and it takes me ~52 minutes. At first I was exercising without first eating breakfast, which means I was doing 4 miles on an empty stomach, having not eaten in 12 or 13 hours (since dinner the prior evening). While exercising I would feel pretty good the entire time as well as for about an hour or two afterwards. After that, my energy levels would start to plummet and I'd feel tired and unmotivated to do much the rest of the day. Sometimes I'd even start to feel sleepy even if I'd slept fine during the night. Thinking it was because of running on a very empty stomach, I tried eating a little something first. That's made no difference. On days when I do not exercise, I generally feel fine and my energy is consistent throughout the day. Anyway, I have so much more to learn and think about in regards to all this. I look forward to future videos of yours. PS - I like the videos better without music. The music in and of itself is fine, in my opinion, but maybe just a bit distracting.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 3 года назад
Glad you liked the video! Post run fatigue is very normal, and although there could be many different reasons for it, some of which might be important to pursue if it becomes a serious problem long term, it could also simply be your body responding to the training. Fatigue is part of training. It means you've challenged the status quo of the body, and asked it to adapt to a new level of stress. After stressful workouts I also can feel sleepy and tired after a couple of hours. If it was a super hard workout, I'll be wasted for the rest of the day. My advice: Pay attention to your training load management and maintain intensity discipline. In other words, perhaps your current level of training is a bit more than your body can handle at one time both in terms of total volume, but also in terms of the intensity of the running. Most runs should be done at an easy intensity. That means a HR of less than 75% of max. Then over time, gradually increase the load, but give your body ample time (as in 4-6 weeks) to adapt to your current level of training before increasing the load by upping mileage or intensity. You could also experiment with running during the day or afternoon instead. Our bodies are all different. And stay on top of the general pre and post run routines with regards to nutrition and hydration, and especially afterwards, making sure you get in enough calories and hydrate well - which may include electrolytes. Most of all, remember that it's normal and natural to be tired after a session, and there's a reason why elite athletes take a nap during the day, and generally just laze about when they are not training. Training is challenging to the body! If you're interested in diving deeper on this topic, talk about your situation/training or perhaps would like a custom training plan at any point, don't hesitate to check out my coaching website at www.mgjcoaching.no/international Wishing you all the best :)

First off I don't like the music in the background lol. I have ran over 40 marathons with ten Bostons in a row and I have found that for me eating prior to running is the way to go. I feel that I need the carbs to help me run my fastest. For a marathon I eat, then take 4 gels, one every 40 minutes or so and about 20oz of sports drink per hour during the race. Marathon fueling is different for everyone, you really need the experience of racing to find what works for you.

Breakfast, to me, is essential. Why on earth should we omit breakfast before running if we do eat it on a daily basis WITH NO running? The best treatment I ever found is on McMillan's website. He explains specific situation where eating breakfast is mandatory (i.e. intervals/repeats, pace stepping-up long runs, etc.), and other ones i.e. steady long runs where it could be omitted. Sugar is also far from being the best choice as a nutrient in advanced marathoning. Cereal crackers or so, 1 to 1,5 hrs before training, will work best (IMHO). As a ruler of thumb, I used to eat 1 or two bananas when 21 km distance is overcome, prior to continuing my way. Thanks!
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 5 лет назад
Manipulating diet to achieve certain metabolic effects might be worth pursuing at times, like omitting breakfast before certain runs. Most of the time though, breakfast is a good idea, and it's certainly training - not diet - that creates most of the metabolic adaptations beneficial for endurance performance. But as you mention (or rather what McMillan mentions according to you) it doesn't make sense to omit breakfast before important high intensity workouts. Easy long runs though, perhaps some time - but it has to be measured up against the potential downsides in terms of prolonged need for recovery etc. When it comes to fuelling - it does not matter whether the carbohydrate is coming in the form of complex carbohydrates or simple sugars, the latter will however be easier to digest and thus decrease the likelyhood of GI issues. Before a run or race, the important factor is to have liver glycogen stocked up. It stores 100 grams approximately, so as long as you get in about 500 calories of carb heavy food 2-3 hours beforehand, you're good. During the run/race, 30-90 grams per hour is a general guideline. Whether that comes from bananas or plain sugar is up to personal preference. But towards the higher end of the spectrum it needs to be a mix of different sugars (fructose and glucose for example, ideally in a 1:3 ratio) in order to maximize uptake through different transporters in the gut lining. :D

I know this is a comment late, exercising with just a little to no food is better. Bicycle or walk a long way to the theater in the morning. w/ballet (Germany & Switz) it was intermittent fasting, with morning class & rehearsal, no food or drink until 2. no coffee, only on training days. After 2. bicycle or walk a long way home. then a small meal or just chocolate. take a nap, head to the theater around 6, Maybe a little chocolate on the way to the theater (bicycle or walk a long way). 1 ritter sport a day sometimes. If I was nervous about a performance, I added pasta at lunch, as a slow carb release for energy also. (not healthy pasta, just semolina) I used pasta as a calming mechanism for evening performances at 8. After I drank a lot of beer or wine with food, late around 11-midnight, bicycle with my dyno-lite headlight or walk a long way home. Today, I'm on this gray hair issue, and diet, & fasting. 2 yrs ago there's no gray hair on you. Maybe make a vlog if you know the answers about it. You look great.

Hey! I would not recommend a time restricted eating pattern for anyone looking for optimal performance and fitness, and honestly even just basic health. Exercising in a fasted state, or as I explain in the video in a depleted state, is a training tool to be used sometimes but I would not recommend doing it very often, certainly not every day. Eating regular meals and sufficient calories, from quality food, is the basis of healthy eating :)

In order to look and feel slim, & costume fittings can't be after a meal either. I don’t eat breakfast before a run BECAUSE I’M FAT ADAPTED. I’ll eat at 3PM as my last meal of the day. I’ll wake up at 6:30 AM the next morning and run 8 miles at a 7:15 pace and feel GREAT. THIS FAT ADAPTATION TOOK ABOUT A YEAR TO DEVELOP. Quite honestly most athletes don’t have the PATIENCE to develop this ability. If you achieve it WOW ITS WORTH THE EFFORT. Actually when your liver AND your muscles are depleted of glycogen what the liver does ingeniously is perform what’s called Gluconeogenesis. This is the liver’s ability to convert fat into glucose AND IN ADDITION IT WILL PRODUCE KETONE BODIES ( thus the term keto) WHICH BURNS MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN GLYCOGEN.. 1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 cal. of energy. 1 gram of fat = 9 cal. of energy. THATS WHY I LOVE RUNNING FAT ADAPTED. THE MORE YOU DO IT THE BETTER YOU CAN PERFORM.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing. Yes fat adaption is a real thing, but the other side of the coin is that you loose the high end and ability to burn maximal amounts of carbohydrate and thus perform optimally on race day and during key workouts. Studies looking at fat adaption and performance do not find that it improves performance as far as I've seen, and looking at the diet of the best performers in the endurance sports it's clear that a high carbohdyrate diet is favored. That said, even while on a high carb diet you will still become more and more fat adapted just by doing endurance type training.

When you run on a empty stomach you use the carbs /sugar stores in your muscles. The energy from a potential breakfast you will use later.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 2 года назад
You'll use your glycogen stores (muscle carbohydrate) regardless of whether you eat breakfast or not. The breakfast will stock up your liver glycogen however, helping you avoid low blood sugar on runs that are longer than perhaps an hour. You can store about 100 grams of glycogen in your liver, and you deplete most of it during the night. You'll be able to run for a while without going completely empty though, but for runs lasting over an hour it's a good idea to get in some carbs before or during the run. If you eat a breakfast with a lot of simple carbohydrates like the sugar in fruit - you'll utilize that almost immediately, not later.
@moose1689
@moose1689 2 года назад
This is very interesting. I bet there are genetic differences what suits best to your body. I've been doing approx 7km morning runs on HR zone 2-3 with 3,5km cycling before and after. I've had only coffee and water before the exercise and felt good. Today I made an exception and had one banana as an extra. Everything else was pretty much the same and I was 100% recovered according to my watch. I had run probably 1 km when my body crashed totally! I just had to turn and walk back to my bike. This hasn't happened to me before during this years training. The way I reason this, is after having the banana, my body couldn't use the energy from the body anymore, but was craving for more food. That's why I was also very hungry during my run.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 2 года назад
There are certainly genetic differences as to how our body metabolizes fat vs carbohydrate, but it's trainable. There could me more explanations to your experience (based on other variables than food) than just that banana, but if it did indeed happen due to a blood sugar crash, it's not certain that it would happen again. It could be just that day. Either way, if you experiment over time your body will learn how to deal with this. If your insulin sensitivity is low due to a high fat diet, it's possible that the surge of insulin (bigger than it would be if you had a higher insulin sensitivity due to a lower fat/higher carb diet) caused a blood sugar crash when you were also consuming glucose at a higher rate due to exercise. This is all speculation and not medical advice of course. My thought would be to experiment.

@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 4 года назад
Hey! No I do not focus on organic as the organic foods have pesticides on them as well and in some cases those can be even more toxic than the synthetic ones. Andrew Perlot has a good video series about it on RU-vid, look it up. It would be nice to eat "true organic" but it's hard to find and I don't prioritize that right now, time wise AND financially. I prefer raw fruitarian, no doubt, but only IN the tropics where the fruit is EPIC and super sweet and calorie dense. So I'm happy eating the way I am right now also.

I want to lose weight so I might do run before breakfast
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 5 лет назад
It's not going to make a very big difference when you run in terms of weight loss. What matters is how big the calorie deficit ends up being. Running before breakfast might burn more fat - but that doesn't mean you'll lose weight, it just means your body prefers fat over carbohydrate during the exercise. The key is to calculate energy out and energy in and make sure you're in a deficit of perhaps 300-600 calories per day.

I ran 22 miles today on a VERY empty stomach and I didn't like it very much at all. I didn't even eat dinner. I know I went over board with the mileage but you live and learn

Most of the time that's actually fine for me, not a problem at all - although not ideal.

no breakfast ever, eat later after 2pm
@LoneEndurance

That might work for some people but it's certainly not ideal if you're an athlete looking for peak performance and health.

I eat a chaboni 90 minutes prior then after i eat full breakfast.
@LoneEndurance
@LoneEndurance 3 года назад
That probably works well! I think you could probably have the snack closer to the run than 90 minutes though. I often have a banana or something and then head straight out and then eat breakfast after. If the goal is to run depleted though, you need to fast for 12 hours minimum first, and/or deplete your glycogen stores by going long/hard the day before and then eat little in the mean time.
