Watch my next video where I tried waking up at 5 am for 30 days which is already out on Nebula at nebula.tv/videos/zachhighley-....
Two months into quarantine my fitness was at an all-time low. I made the decision to run for 30 days. I have never run before. Here are the results of that experiment (my life will never be the same).

best thing about running in the morning is that you feel good about yourself for the rest of the day and you end up making the right decisions throughout the day

Its bc exercise reduces your bodies sensitivity to stress and anxiety. It almost makes you numb to stressful situations. And you can think more clearly because you are not constantly at unease if you normally have anxiety

While we can certainly run, we're not built to do a lot of running. Over time, the body will breakdown.. Distance runners typically suffer various spine, leg, and feet problems. To avoid this, it's better to cross train such that the body doesn't keep doing the same repetitive motion every day.

Endorphin highs are addicting. Beating personal best times is addicting. Freeing your mind is addicting. Feeling better is addicting. First we build our habits, then they build us. Every human with a relatively functioning body can get stronger and better through running. Period.

For beginner runners; most runners are just glad to see you out there doing it. People get so caught up in what others think of their pace when the majority are just happy that people are discovering the joys of running. So don’t worry about your pace. Don’t feel embarrassed if your slower than others. Just keep getting out there and doing it. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you. For the most part, the running community are some of the nicest people I have come across!

For real, though! When I’m on my runs, I’m watching runners pass and I’m thinking “You go dude!” and “Go get ‘em!” Maybe because it was because I was in cross country, or something xD, but man, I love when people are running because they’re helping themselves in the long term.

Most of the time when I am running I am not even thinking about other people. I’m more concerned about the bikers and them passing (I run with my RayCons turned way up) without me getting hit. So I am constantly checking my shoulders which makes me look like I am checking on where the person is behind me. Be selfish when you run and don’t care what people think because most of the time they are excited to see you out there or are more focused on their own run to be concerned with you! Running has been the best thing for me and helps me enjoy the summers more!

It's not other runners who criticize me for running slowly. Ironically, it's strangers loitering about on the street. Maybe it's because I'm thin and young so they "expect" me to be a better runner, but lots of people have no fun making fun of my speed for some reason. It's so annoying and frustrating because it usually just stuns me into silence and then all the time alone with my thoughts during my run really lets it get to me!

Yeah, just a shame he said "he was glad the 30 days was over" as soon as he said that he was done :(.. He should have said "I made 30 days, feel great.. sometimes i have off days but you know what? in everything in my life has gotten better, i smile more and attract smiling faces back, i see other people running and i get hello`s back, i radiate happiness, there are so many positives, not only in my life but in other sports if i decide to take them up, why? Because i know my cardio is at peak form now and i won`t be some slob out of shape and out of breath, which would be a good reason i might give up on something new. I am also guessing in those clips those are the rocky steps? That in it`s self should be inspiration to keep going. As Stallone keeps saying "Keep punching" or in this case.. Keep running

When I started running I was in my late 30s, could hardly run to the end of the street. Felt like i was going to be sick every run, heart was pounding, gasping for air and I was literally only jog walking.. I smoked, drank way too much alcohol, other vices too and my diet was terrible. I was absolutely determined to get fit enough to just run once around the block without stopping, then once around 2 blocks, then my whole neighbourhood, then my whole town.. Its been around 6 or 7 years since that first run and now I run 25km almost every single day and it's easy.. If you want to get fit never give up, it's absolutely horrid for the first few months but gradually your body will adapt and it will become normal and very very enjoyable. I gave up all my bad habits due to running, I took up some hobbies I probably wouldnt have without running.. Realistically running changed my life completely for the better, it's now the thing I love most and every day i cannot wait to get out and run

@el SM I prefer morning running, but evenings are nice too. Just be mindful of what you eat and how much energy you have, you might be worn out by evening. Regarding embarrassment, maybe try wearing a hoodie or put in ear buds and distract yourself so you're not self conscious. It will get better as you run more, as well.
@MAttWDroneVids
@MAttWDroneVids 3 года назад
@el SM Hey, when i started running I was so unfit and self conscious I would only run in the dark, and wearing jogging bottoms and a hoodie. Once I was able to run around the block (maybe about a mile and a half) I started wearing a T shirt and then shorts and now its pretty much running vest and running shorts.. Whatever you do don't give up, your fitness will definitely come and so will your confidence. As far as running in the evening, I personally prefer evening runs although on a Saturday and Sunday I usually do a morning one but whatever suits you is fine. If you are going to run in the evening try to give yourself around 3 hours since your last food or drink otherwise you will possible get a stitch.. Other than that just go for it and if you don't give up you will start noticing fitness gains pretty quickly although be prepared for the first couple or more months to be horrible. Just remembered another thing, you don't have to run fast to get fit, so slow and steady, try not to run as fast as you can all the time cos thats a sure way to get injured
@MAttWDroneVids
@MAttWDroneVids 3 года назад
@el SM Keep it up and you will get there. Slow and steady and never giving up is the key :)

Great job brother!!! That’s exactly how I started, “slow and steady wins the race” my drill sergeant used to say. I was the worst runner in basic training because that was literally the first time I ran in my life. I went from completing 2 miles in 26 minutes, to running a 5k in 16 minutes because I did what you did, I applied discipline and embraced the suck, now, I run 5:32 minute miles, have ran several half marathons and am currently training for a iron man in September. Stick with it, I’d love to continue to see your progress!!!

This is so motivating. I started running at age 40. I remember the excitement of getting more endurance, running 15 min without stopping to being able to run 2 hours nonstop. Running 2 miles to being able to run 13 miles nonstop. I ran consistently for 8 years, 4-5 days/ week, then menopause slowed me down and had to deal with other health issues relating to aging. I enjoy going for walks but I am still curious to see if I can build endurance back now at age 51, maybe I won’t be fast or run long distance but I miss the “runner’s high”, I want to feel it again. I can’t wait to recover from Covid and go out for a walk. Thank for this great video.

But despite haven given up on everything, my goals, dreams, and others, I am not able to give up running. And after all these years, I still find myself learning so much more consistently in regards to running, having many "aha!" moments. Running is great.

i'm really happy i stumbled across this. i am a track athlete, and i'm so happy to see another person get into it! and especially in the RIGHT way. so many people i see go hard all day every day but you learned to take it easy and build a base. running is not fun generally, but when youre in shape, it feels like you own the world when you run :)

I never used to exercise or run. But then I just started, the best advice that I have been given is to start slow. You don't want to be so sore that you can't run the next day. Within a week, your body won't be sore and you can run as much as you want to. The key is consistency.

Very inspiring story Zach! Thanks for sharing! I started running in my mid 40s pretty late, but it's ok, never too late to start something new. My first run I could not run 120 seconds... without stopping. Not even two freaking minutes, that was my starting point. Also I got this notion in my head my entire life that I am not a runner. It's just not who I am. No idea where this came from, just making excuses I guess. Sticking with it is the trick, especially at the beginning. My progress was a lot slower then yours, but after 6 months I did a 5K. Now I am running 5K and 10K trails runs in national parks and film them for youtube, I look forward to every run I film or just do for myself. Great way to just clear out your mind too. Cheers and keep on running!

Looking at the shape he was in at the start, I don't believe he was as unfit or out of shape as he claimed - the guy's chest, shoulders and arms have definitely seen a gym. The guy was running over five miles within a few days - he wasn't in bad condition.

@@KENTOSI very true but I think he was running 5+ miles after just a few runs. That's way above what I'd expect a total non-runner to be able to achieve. I just feel this has been overstated for the sake of being able to make some content.

@@ZachHighley, I too have trouble with letting people know of what I'm doing if I didn't get to a desired level and I might know where you're coming from with that comment, so my advice to you is: don't let that pride get you, man. Nobody does anything perfect from the beginning. Letting others see the process of getting somewhere is being real and it shows courage worthy of appreciation. I do believe that building humbleness like that is crucial for one's own development. I mean no bad intent and I hope you receive this comment well and give it a thought.

Well done you! Once you get started, the hardest part is literally not overdoing it. The first day we were allowed outdoor exercise out of complete lockdown I started a streak that would last me 206 days (and ended in a half marathon PR!) , but even after being a runner for almost a decade, I had to back down after a couple of months because I'd done too much. You did a good job navigating your efforts, not hurting yourself or getting bored with it. Honestly, the sucky runs are the contrast to the highs that we NEED! Running can be truly life-changing, glad you got a taste for it. Ps. Running in the rain is THE BEST! That's when I am almost guaranteed a high!

This was such a fun video!! I initially subbed for your anki vids (starting med school next year/send help), but I've been a runner since middle school and it's so enjoyable to see others get to experience distance running. I've been running for so long that it's really easy for me to take it for granted and get lazy/annoyed with my runs, but this was a great reminder for me how it's such a gift to be able to get out on the roads and test the limits of your body & mind. Keep up the great work! (and good call on the Brook's) :)

Today is my Day 31, and I just found your video. I can say that my experience has been very much the same. I remember getting out of high school and being glad I "wouldn't have to" practice and run for sports anymore, but I'm now 31 y/o and I'm excited about running and having a blast so far. Seeing progress is amazing. I will add that for 18 months before I started running, I did absolutely nothing. I sat at a computer. I experienced muscle atrophy and felt like I'd been living on the ISS.
