Why do you need a symbol of commitment? Engagement rings are a symbol of an engagement. Wedding bands are a symbol of marriage. Promise rings are in a weird spot because they "promise" that you are ready to be serious but not ready to be serious enough to get engaged. My thoughts at least.

@@chasesnyder12 some people are in a weird spot of waiting for that season of engagement but not being able to get there soon due to many reasons. Whether it’s financial setbacks, wanting to finish college, etc. A promise ring can be used for when you two are not ready to get married (which doesn’t make you less serious) but want to show your commitment that one day you two will get engaged and married to one another. It’s perfect for those who are serious for one another but are unable to get engaged at that very moment for whatever reason! It’s a sweet moment nonetheless if the couple do end up married haha.

@@76ersfan4life3 Great question! That is sorta my logic here. A marriage ring doesn't hold any power for commitment. It is a symbol. If a man loses his wedding ring he is still married because he is committed. A married couple doesn't have to wear a wedding ring. A promise ring gets into this weird spot because it promises a small amount of commitment without promising full commitment. A promise ring is normally given because someone is promising that they love the other person and wants to one day get married - which is the purpose of an engagement ring. I know there are other reasons people give promise rings but I think it is dangerous to pledge commitment when someone isn't ready to be committed (because of age, life stage, finances, etc.).

For real. When I hear about a promise ring I hear this statement in my head, "I promise that I will one day make a bigger commitment to you but I just can't right now."

I got a promise ring for Valentine’s Day from my boyfriend im turning 32 this year and he’s turning 29 this year and we been talking about getting married one day be we don’t have the money to do that right now so he got me a promise ring 💍 it has both of our names on it and both of our birth stones on it our brith stones are both emerald because our birthdays are both in May emerald is a very beautiful stone to put on a promise ring 💍

Are you ready to make a commitment for marriage? If so, consider getting engaged. If you are not ready to make that commitment I would suggest that you not give her a promise ring to promise something that you aren't sure that you are committed to do.

Lol don’t listen to him, promise rings were made for a reason, its a nice gesture. Engagement is so much more of a bigger deal then he’s making it, especially when you’re young and poor and want those moments to be special. He “ Just get engaged” like after this video if you don’t get engaged to your girl you don’t love her, a promise ring just holds that commitment until the bigger moment of proposing don’t listen to what he’s saying if you know it’ll make your girl happy, go for it!

Thanks for the response. My opinion is simply my opinion on this! Sounds like you have a plan to get your parents' input/approval - which is wise to bring other people into a large decision.

Same here, but I'm going to leave the country soon. So, a promise ring would means to us as something to remind each other even though we are countries apart.

After counseling countless teenagers and college students I've seen few strong relationships that had a promise ring in the mix. In my experience, which this post is all about, promise rings bring confusion instead of clarification for relationships. I maintain the the best way to show commitment is to be committed and a ring is reserved for someone who is ready to get engaged/married. There are various ideas on them. This is just my perspective.

Chase Snyder I agree with the marriage thing. I’d happily propose and be engaged. Because this doesn’t mean you have to get married soon. You can be engaged for years before you’re ready to get married and settle down. But a lot of people don’t see it this way and it can scare someone off. It also can bring uncertainties into that persons life and make the person receiving such ring question if they feel the same and if the other person is being to pushy or feeling more strong towards things. I’ve been talking to a girl for 8 months who’s my best friend. I believe I’ll marry her because we both bounce of each other like no one we have ever met. She just broke up last august and finally cut communication 2 months ago and it’s been hard for her but almost everytime even tho she still loved her ex she chose me. She’s almost over her ex and she’s changed her mind from not wanting a relationship with me to ‘ I’ll tell you when I’m ready I want a relationship now just give me some time’. We both feel the same now but I’d give her a promise ring when she wants to be my girlfriend as a light hearted reminded that I want to marry her and live the rest of my life with her. I’m 19 she’s 18 it’s unrealistic but it’s no impossible. It gives me anxiety all the time because just my thoughts something will happen with no fact behind it to make this not happen occurs in my head all the time and I’m aware this is down to me being insecure. I just think a promise ring isn’t meant to symbolise getting married but just writing down similar aspects and promising them as well as marriage as a way to show how much they mean to you. Women like jewellery so why not include a meaning behind something instead of it just being a piece of metal given by someone. Lots of girls have trust issues and my hopefully soon to be gf has a lot and she was heart broken by her dad before her ex cheated. I just think it’s not bad for all relationships but I understand some of your reasons tho. I’d like any feedback on your opinion to my comment

I maintain that a promise ring can put pressure on the relationship. If you are ready to commit then get an engagement ring and begin planning your marriage. The best way to prove that you love someone is by being faithful. I understand that you want to show her that you care but be careful to to commit to her with a promise ring if you are unable to fully commit to her - even if it is because of your age or stage of life.

Its just a ring with a nice gesture at the end of the day. Be weary of rushing into a commitment. No one knows how long the pandemic will last - adding a rushed commitment to it will only add stress. Have open conversations with the person you are dating and see where they are at in the relationship.

Thanks for sharing, but from the sound of it this seems like a limited commitment (which is why I caution against promise rings) since he says it 'huge" and that you putting your careers before your relationship. I have nothing against pursuing a career, but it is hard to be in a long term relationship with someone when they know you are putting your career before them. I hope the best for your relationship.

Chase Snyder Well the significance is that I want her to know that when I’m leaving and off to school that I still and always will love her and always be here for and just letting her know I’m not going anywhere. Honestly I want to just get an engagement ring but I feel as if we are way to young and id like to wait a while longer.
