I’ve also experimented with a thumb pick and it is a completely different feel and I gave up prematurely it seems. Thanks for the encouragement. Patience and persistence is key.
Used one when I played slide in open tuning. Just like every other style of picking, it has it's place. Ultimately comes down to preference. You can always hybrid, which to me seems the way to go if you're looking to really dive in on a style. It's just so versatile
I've used a thumbpick ever since I started with guitar, my Uncle was a huge Chet Atkins fan, and I've followed suit, unfortunately as a result I can hardly hold a flat pick. A thumbpick opens up a ton of possibilities, but can be restrictive in some ways, however, you can use some really cool techniques to substitute for those limitations.
I have always been a fingerstyle guitarist. Watching videos, I was noting how many fingerstyle players used thumb picks, and I decided to give them a try. I got a variety of them, and I have made some efforts to use it. I can see the advantages of using it already, but it will take some time to adjust to using one. I am still mostly playing without one, but I try to put some time in with it. I have been hearing good things about the Black Mountain pick and am planning to get one or two.
Nice lesson, I've also been working with a thumb pick, I live in Arkansas so folk and mountain music is popular but we also have the delta so the blues is popular and I've used the thumb pick also for that...Thanks again Marty for this lesson..
Hey Marty, thank you for the demonstration on the benefits of learning to use a thumb pick! Seems that I need to add a few Black Mountain thumb picks to my cache of picks;-)
I've got one of me dad's old Dunlop thumbpicks and it makes a loud noise if you strum with it. I bought some of those black Mountain picks when I first started playing and couldn't keep hold of the pick properly, and I can't use them like a normal pick, I can't seem to get them to work on the up strokes without feeling like I'm gonna snap a string. I do like them for playing all down strums though, they're like mini amps lol you can make some right noise with them
Marty I'm asking you because I think you're the only one who knows. Does any company make a thumb pick in a light gauge? I have the dual problem of being a heavy strummer and also have trouble holding on to the pic. I feel a light gauge thumb pic with solve both of my problems. thank you.
Hey Marty, my name is Maliya and I'm 11 and I really want to learn how to play guitar because when I grow up I want to be in a band but first I think I I have to learn the ABCs of it like the positions of how to hold it if you know what I'm talking about and I chose to ask you because I've watched some of your videos and you teach a way that I can understand so yeah I don't know how to end this....byeeee
I think you are asking about Guitar Posture. I don't know if Marty has a video about it, but here is one from Justin Guitar in case Marty doesn't get a chance to answer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IscDj_-Nr0s.html
My hands are small. I'm having a terrible time placing my hands in a good position to keep it stable to finger pick plus a hard time figuring out where my fingers should be to not get intertwined or whatever it's called lol 😅 🙃
