My $0.02: I first learned VueJS since I found React too challenging to learn. After learning the basics of Vue and improving my basic Javascript skills, I came back to React and and am now grasping what it's trying to do. I feel it's making me a better Javascript developer. I may be wrong, but it appears VueJs has much more syntactical sugar and relies much more on DSL (domain specific language) then REact, which appears to me to rely more on core Javascript techniques. So while I agree with the ease of use being a good indicator of potential popularity and adoption, I worry that VueJS'reliance on DSL will curtail its long term viability. Great video BTW. You always put out gold

I agree with you, however as someone that has learned both Vue and React, for more complex projects Vue requires you to know as much Javascript as a complex project in React however in my experience, a developer with the same (advanced) javascript and framework knowledge is much more productive in Vue. I understand how the syntactical sugar works in Vue, and everytime Im working with React I miss this syntatic sugar dearly. Vue makes you focus on the logic.

The ease of use is a great point that I think many underestimate. In fact, the ease of use is almost seen as a negative; the impression I get is that many devs take pride in learning the "harder" of the two. Your comments echo what I heard from Jeffrey Way of Laracasts years ago. He too said that devs will gravitate to Vue because it's easy. And in every case I think "easy" means that it makes sense, it's intuitive and it's clear.

When I look at job offers (in germany) most of them don't require knowledge of any specific framework. Most of them (actually all I looked at) require experience with js frameworks in general. I guess most people shouldn't have much trouble picking up a new framework if they worked with another one.

New programmers don't understand that high demand for new technologies is not because its so much better than old one but because a company hired a developer who implemented a new, trendy framework/library into the project and it caused problems. And now company is looking (hoping) for a React/Angular 6 programmer to hopefully solve the problem.

the key point is at min. 0:09 . If you have "NO JOBS IN MIND". Because the aweful reality is that there're simply no jobs for Vue.js now. As I always say: You want to know what technology or language you should learn?? Look at the job offers. It's all there. So if just want to learn smth because it's simpler or might have a slightly brighter future.., then by all concerns, go ahead. But, if you actually want to find a job in this business in the near real world future, the go for react+node or angular. End of the story.

I'm studying and working in Canada. I didn't hear of Vue.js until I came back to China for a vacation. I couldn't believe how popular vue.js is in China. I was told that Vue.js is developed by a Chinese Developer. Therefore, it hasn't spread all over the world. I got a chance to review source code of a web project of a company that is built on Vue.js. I was shocked and honestly felt it's much better than React and other js frameworks. Yes, it's just dependent on the region you are in. If to look for a job in America, React is much much better. But in China, Vue is more used.

React is obviously the most popular, but I'm going to be a rebel and choose Vue for the first framework I pickup. I had been debating this question for a while now. But for Vue, The documentation is EXCELLENT. I say this as someone that has a basic understanding of JS, I can actually READ the docs on Vue, and understand it a bit!!! This has typically not been my experience when trying to read documentation. I think Vue is going to eventually catch on in a way that people aren't expecting. Vue just seems SO easy to implement into your projects and pretty easy to understand.

At work we use React and on my personal projects I use Vue anyway my point here is that React is more close to developers who use to work in backend but It takes a lot of boilerplate to have it nicely structured compared with Vue so the real question here is how good are you on Javascript because these days javascript becomes powerful and is compatible across all browsers then as to be successful choose the simplest framework that fit your needs.

A few weeks ago, after finishing a frontend technologies course, I had to choose which path I should take (and master). I decided to go with React and vanilla JS(The truth is I didn't know about Vuejs at that moment). I think I have made a good decision, though, 'coz I feel that learning React is also making me a better JS developer. And I also have to say that you somehow remind me of Al Pacino(sorry, I had to say it). Anyway, I am really happy that I found this channel and can't wait to see more videos!!

Learn a lot about the few languages, frameworks, and libraries you need to do a specific job, but always spend time learning a little bit about a lot of things you aren't currently using. At least then you'll have a basis for comparison, and you'll be ahead of the game if you need to learn a technology in more depth in the future.

I think the question is really can Vue do the more complex projects, since it's pretty clear it's better for smaller projects. In my limited experience it's very similar for more advanced projects, so I could see it catching up since developers already have their foot in the door.

The newer JS frameworks/libraries (cuz people like having long winded arguments whether or not ReactJS is a library or framework), have very similar concepts especially with 'components' and passing data via 'props' and what not. I just hope there is more talk and understanding come 2019 on 'state management', because I still do not quite understand when to use it and how to use it effectively. The 'lifecycle' too can be tiresome for VueJS, Angular, and React.

Hardly any jobs out there for Vue, despite the GitHub star hype. I think it's the more sustainable option when compared to React, though. . .A few years from now, devs are going to be pulling their faces off in horror at the concept of JSX (i.e. mixing HTML with logic).

I agree that Vue.js is a better investment than Angular or React. But my question is this - do we really need a front end framework at all ? Each site will differ - at least - in regard to header, article, sidebar and footer content. For sites of similar layout, a web designer can just copy-and-paste the html/css/js/fonts from previously designed site A to new project site B, then change the content text as required within each page block. Suppose site B not only differs in content but also demands a whole different 'look', i.e. a different layout, e.g. vertical navbar, video led main page content, etc. Here the web designer will be spending most of their time imagining the appearance of the new site and trying to find HTML/CSS/JS constructs to achieve it. Previous 'template' sites won't be any use at all. As I see it, front end frameworks only earn their keep when the web designer is doing generic websites, e.g. web shops with many stock items, that have little demand for attractive appearance. BTW, I agree 100% with all you say on core technology learning. I'm glad I learned JavaScript properly and ignored jQuery. Now I have slideshows the way I want them and with more features than the standard. I don't have the dead weight of carrying the whole jQuery library and additional plugins either - an important thing for sites read on small devices by impatient users.

I agree that Vue has a simpler API design. This however is the direction the React team has been taking with hooks. It’s completely different an experience writing apps using hooks. A lot more clean, concise and simple api design. The folks at the React team are also thinking about solutions that they are working with the Chrome team to bring into browser land. I totally agree it’s always valuable understanding the fundamentals of any platform. ES6, 7 etc...

As you mentioned in the video, learning vanilla JS is the best way to start because then the framework/library won't be a huge issue. I have purchased JavaScript and jQuery by Jon Duckett to dive deeper into vanilla. After trying React a while back it felt far too complex for someone only coding for a few months. Would you recommend giving vue.js a shot since it is less complex? Perhaps it would even help me start building a portfolio quicker(unless it's frowned upon to use Vue.js in your portfolio sites).

I like these videos by Stef, and I agree that Vue is overall a bit nicer syntax wise than React. The only thing is that this video doesn't really do much specific comparing and contrasting so that viewer doesn't have much to form an opinion on other than "Vue is simpler" :P Given that I'm kind of surprised to see such a high like rate. Also, I get the general sense that Stef hasn't really used either of these frameworks which makes me wonder on what is he basing this off of? Now let me repeat, I think that Stef's view (no pun intended) is very wise here, but really the basis is Stef's experience in coding over a long period of time and looking at safe bets and long term trends rather than using both frameworks. Correct me if I'm wrong Stef!

All I really understand from using redux in two of my own personal small projects, is if you are managing multiple 'state libraries' across multiple pages, having a state management library (single source of truth) is useful. The thing that irks me..is that I feel like devs are just blindly using redux just by seeing the 'single source of truth' clause without really thinking through if they could have simply passed data from a parent -> child component or vice-versa...

Is the idea of jumping to vue from jquery really that bad? I mainly focus on backend but wants to be relevant too in the frontend part of development. Vue is incredibly easy to learn. It took me just a month to learn some great concepts in Vue and using those to make some few small projects. React seems simple at the beginning, but its simplicity is what makes it a bit complicated later on. There isn't much to learn in React, the worst part is using the simplicity of React to build complex projects. Overall both technologies are great. You can go with either one and still feel complete. If you're a beginner then definitely opt for Vue.js.. That's my recommendation.

Vue.js is as hard and robust as react... Just take a good look on vue.js Composition api There are few difference vue.js has some abstractions or dsl such as directives for iterating over a list or conditional rendering in the view. This is something that I miss when working with react.js and I get the argument react is just a javascript. Guess what so is vue.js doesn't mean I wouldn't have nice abstractions for doing things. There are two ways of building app these days either you go heavy on serverside technology like django or ruby on rails. Or you go on heavy client side component based architecture like ember, react and vue. At the end of day all of the javascript frameworks has one thing in common which is complexity and if you're CTO, maybe doing proper framework/library validation and choosing something like Elm is better option.

While I appreciate your perspective, I am leaning personally towards React. Keep the content coming though!

Wasn't Wordpress core looking to adopt vue.js? Not sure what came of that.

Hi Stef. I'm struggling to find a way to use my skills as a business. I work for a company in front-end and React (and some C# back-end and SQL too). What can I do with this skillset in the entrepreneur world and provide this skillset to customers? Something that Wordpress can't do. I dont want to work for a company anymore, I prefer to have my own business. I just don't know what.

Stefan, usually you give solid advice, but not this time. A lot of people are picking up React, so it's obviously possible to learn. Learning something that will likely less help you become a better candidate is a wrong move. Never opt for easy! Go for worthwhile.

people are picking up React mainly because there are more jobs for it as well as the echo chamber of 'it gets you to use components and vanilla javascript' and 'it's by facebook'.

I still don't understand why exactly Vue is supposed to be easier than React. Sure, it provides some convenience features like v-model, which reduce boilerplate and may help you be more productive. But I think Vue simply has a lot more new concepts you have to learn than React. Just take React's props as an example: they basically cover a whole bunch of Vue's features like props, events, slots or class binding. Same things with React's hooks. The fact that React relies on vanilla JS features as much as possible and introduces as few original concepts as necessary is probably one of its biggest strengths. Don't get me wrong: Vue definitely has some advantages over React, I just don't think "easy to learn" is one of them. But maybe I'm a bit biased towards React because I have a lot more experience with it. I would love to hear opinions from people who are more familiar with Vue.

I wish I came across this video earlier 😭😭, Although there are no wasted knowledge but I've wasted my time trying to learn react 🤦‍♂️ And I tend to take what you say serious cause you're someone with experience you definitely know what you're saying 🤦‍♂️
