Thanks for watching. This mower was left outside for a very long time after it didn't start, but wait until you see what's inside the fuel tank.

The trouble I have with storing equipment outside is that the "cables" get rusted to the point of not being able to use them, or the "neighbors" steal them.

For me, I’ll keep my owners manual. In terms of storage and where I would keep my equipment, I would keep the equipment either in a shed or in my garage with no fluids inside them. The reason being is because I rather drain all the fluids out at the end of mowing season and I can work on the equipment when needed and when it comes time to mowing in the spring again, all I have to do is put fluids back in the equipment, start it up and be on my way.

Whenever I get any new piece of equipment, I download the pdf of the owner’s manual and store it on a mobile cloud storage site (think Dropbox or Microsoft Cloud or the Apple equivalent). Whenever I need to check my manual, I get it from the cloud no matter if I’m on my phone, on my laptop, desktop, iPad, or what have you, and that includes when I’m in the store, and I need to know what type of spark plug I need to pick up.

Most people don't have a clue how stuff works. They don't care too. Very good for the existance of manufacturers😂 to keep on making new. I prefer keeping stuff inside a shed or garage. Storing outside under a tarp gives you high risk of critters getting in easily and rust due to high temperature differences also the fuel ages quicker.

We store all our power equipment indoors in a garage/Outhouse, our Lawn tractor and Rider and ATVs on first floor (concrete) if we dont need the floor space for other things and during the winter season the Lawn tractor and Rider along with one ATV is stored on the second floor.. no power equipment is stored outside other than very short term.. manuals and service manual where I have obtained these are now kept in a ring-binder .. I think that indoor storage was a factor in me being able to just pull the right rear wheel straight of our Husqvarna LT151 when I needed to service the brake/parking brake, as I have gathered from several RU-vid videos it's quite common for those to be seized on there .. I did use anti-seize when putting the wheel back on the drive-axle just to be sure, and will take the other wheel off when I get the time and to the same there I doubt the wheels have been off it since it was bulit in 2004 One thing I have learned is that a lot of dirt will collect under the plastic "covers" on the foot rests on the lawn tractor, and this will hold moisture and can cause rust, it had on ours.. I sanded the rusted parts of the foot rests treated the metal wit rust converter and spray painted the foot rests..so if you have a lawn tractor with plastic pads/covers on the foot rests then it's a very good idea take these off and clean under them if you can.. I even machine polished the Lawn tractor and waxed it before this season and it came out looking nearly bran new 😀

We were told the same thing when storing vehicles; either fill the tank up completely, or if it is going to be long-term, drain it completely. For the exact same reason of condensation. Mine is living under a carport, minus the ants. One day, that shop will be a reality! 🐺🔧

@georgepruitt637

The trouble with "filling the tank" is that gas starts going bad in about 30 days. Also, the tank is plastic, made from petroleum out of the same "fracking tower" that the gas and oil come from. I have replaced many of those "plastic carbs" as they start melting/dissolving internally from fuel being left inside them . Always, run them dry. Just purchase enough fuel for getting the job done, then drain/remove the rest. Pour in a car, so it can be used and not wasted. Good video !

In answer to how I store my mowers: 1st one outside in the shade of a shed. No fuel in the gas tank or carb. Some mowers my neighbors had issues with starting I found contaminated fuel was the issue because the contaminated fuel was in the gas can they used to refuel the mower; gas can didn’t have a cap or they didn’t use fuel stabilizer when gas was left sitting for a long while (understandable that many don’t know about that or even have the time for it) to keep the fuel from going bad. Another issue could be a bad/damaged or cracked fuel cap on the mower’s fuel tank that may cause contaminants like water to leak in while washing the mower down.

I have equipment stored in several locations. My rototiller in my old shed; shortly after I bought it (24 years ago) I had to store it under a cluster of oak trees because I didn’t have a shed at the new house. I eventually built a shed and stored it there. But storing it outside caused water to get in the carb and fuel tank. Needless to say it still runs line a champ. In another year I shoul be able to get a “classic “ license plate for it. I have mowers and tractors stored in a three sided shelter under tarps. The tarps are to keep the bird poop off. They will move to the barn next year (I’m on a waitlist). I have other implements stored in the open or under a roof but I would like to move them to the barn if there is room once it gets built.

Always stored in shed or garage, the deck gets a coat of wax in the spring after the oil change and tune up. If I have to wash it off it gets dried with the leaf blower or the air compressor. If I had to store it outdoors I would probably use a breathable equipment cover or make a tarp out of an old car cover.

so you just spray things with a lot of degreaser and rinse all the dirt away? if I do this to my lawn mower which spots should I avoid? I imagine I probably shouldn't spray the coil if it's at all exposed or the spark plug but I didn't really notice if you avoided any spots in the video and anyways you did mention that it's a good idea to let things dry off after they get wet so as long as it dries off would it be okay to basically spray the whole thing what degreaser and then rinse it down?

Mine are all stored in a garage. I tell my customers that don't have a way to store theirs, to at least remove the gas cap and put a plastic baggie over the gas cap inlet and then screw the gas cap back on over the plastic baggie. As the air heats up in the day and cools off at night the fuel tank sucks air into it and the moisture in the air goes into the gas. Especially if they use gas with ethanol. Thanks for the video.

I don't really have an indoor storage option. Always covered with a tarp when not in use during the season. I keep the tarp pretty much just over the engine, but loose enough so that air can flow through the tarp, just protection from direct rain and hail. Only really completely empty the tank for Winter storage, and then the mower pretty much gets mummified with the tarp. Never really had any issues with moisture in the fuel or fuel tank, this mower is on its 3rd season, moved back to a place where I have to mow my own lawn, while before I moved away I had a Toro Whirlwind that was stored the same way last over a decade; that mower only stopped working because the landlord borrowed it to another one of his renters without even asking me, and the guy bent the shaft on some stump or large rock.

Dust covered metal plus humidity equals rust. I have an old Murray rider that stays outside (usually uncovered). Just keeping the dust blown off and blowing it off after a rain keeps it in good shape... Also, I know you didn't ask for suggestions but everytime I see you have a new video, I'm hoping it's gonna be vintage equipment. Those are the best.
