What are your favorite worship bands to listen to that AREN'T the big top three?

I love old gospel! Aretha Franklin and Edwin Hawkins Singers for example have powerful biblical songs. It’s older music but just amazing. Even Carrie Underwood has a newer gospel album that is all old hymns and it is outstanding. I had never listened to her music before but it’s the one CD I find myself playing in the car every single day.

Single artists and bands. There are so many. If you want to go "old school" to my parents' records, I'd say Jim Nabors, Statler Brothers, and Tennessee Ernie Ford. Coming closer to my teens and twenties, Acapella Company (especially "Abba Father"), Craig Smith, Wendy & Mary, some of Michael W. Smith, Rich Mullins, and Petra (especially "Creed"). Now, I enjoy quartets and acapella groups like The Old Paths, Triumphant Quartet, etc. I greatly appreciate the "direct from the Bible" songs and hymns from Simon Khorolskiy. I know he has had some personal problems (we're all broken), but I like some of Jason Gray's work. There's Zach Williams and Steph Macleod (also of "Celtic Worship") for favorite voices. Hubby just started listening to Josh Wilson, Tim Be Told, CAIN, Sanctus Real, The Afters, Matthew West, and NEEDTOBREATHE; I like the sound, but haven't really done much looking at ALL of the lyrics yet. I enjoy Sounds Like Reign, Awaken Music, and some of Danny Gokey as well as Shane & Shane, Matt Redman, and Voices of Lee. Because I've been given a heart for the Jewish people, I greatly enjoy the work of Christians like Paul Wilbur and Joshua Aaron.

I’ve started to say, if you wouldn’t recommend someone to listen to a sermon from a church, you probably shouldn’t use their music in corporate worship. Yes they have some songs that are good, but they often use Jesus language to pull on our emotions. We should continually be praying for those under these teachings to come to biblical truth! I love Citizens, classic hymns, the Modern Post, Jonathan Ogden/Rivers and Robots. Creative and solid bands.

Well said. My take: absolutely incorporate emotions in worship. It’s part of who we are as human beings. But - BALANCE in all things. Sloppy emotional “Christianity” is one extreme, and passionless sterile “Christianity” is the other. I don’t think you can trash all of any genre of music - you have to take each song on its’ own merits. Some are junk food for your ears (or worse), some are fine.

My church just had a men's addiction center come and share their stories and sing to us for church. One of the songs was from Bethel. No Longer Slaves. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. It was so beautiful and powerful. Just because the church it comes from isn't perfect doesn't mean God can't use it. Let whoever is without sin to cast the first stone. I know people who have come to Christ through Hillsong and then they moved to a different church because they learned and grew in their walk with Christ. While I would never recommend those churches to someone, I share some of their music because it can be so powerful and I always say "the music is great but the teachings of the church are not biblical." And then let that person decide for themselves.

Faith, this was a fair assessment. I went from one end of the spectrum to the next and it was absolutely exhausting. I would listen to anything that had a Christian label on it and not even care to study what the artists believed. And after I went through something so dramatic and traumatic, I canceled every single thing that did not fit the exact mold of something I was being influenced by. It's been almost three years now and I am living within balance, or so I think. While I don't support the top three, I don't have to live in hate and start throwing stones at others because they aren't where I am walking. This is definitely a lifelong journey and we will always have something we can improve on. Thank you for making this video. As for the question you asked in the comments, I love CityAlight, Shane & Shane (for the most part), Sovereign Grace, The Gettys, and others of that nature. I'm still looking for more to add to my list. :)

On September 30, 2018, I heard O Come to the Altar 3 times. Once on the way to church, then we sang it in church, then it was on when I got in the car, after church. The reason I'm saying this, and the reason I remember the exact date, is because when we sang "come today, there's no reason to wait", I felt Jesus tell me that it was time for me to get baptized. I was so overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit that I knew that He Truly was calling. I trust my Lord, more than any human, no matter how much they've studied. I'm not saying she's wrong, but she's not necessarily right. The Lord used an Elevation Worship song to tell me it was time for me to surrender. I'd been waiting to get baptized until I knew the time was right. I'll continue to listen to them.

As Christians, we are the worst about showing Grace to other. I think we forget that we are humans. Yes our church heads should be Good and strive to be as Paul described their attributes to be. However, we live in a sinful world and we are human. I believe if the song puts your head into a Christ centered state of mind, I'm sure God shows us grace for listening to those that aren't biblical. I say this because my Christian stations often play songs by these ministries that are not biblically sound/accurate. I do believe they lead ones heart to Christ though.

Three years ago, the Lord laid it on my heart to be careful what I listen to and sing in church. We were attending a large community church who often used popular worship songs from these three. As I researched them individually, I was deeply saddened by what I learned. I wrote to our worship pastor and asked if he was aware of the heretical teachings in these churches and asked if my spouse and I could have a conversation with him. Crickets. No response at all. Two things bothered me about us singing these songs (even if the actual song was doctrinally sound): 1) a church who runs things above board and honestly, pays for the right to use these songs, thereby financially supporting those churches as a whole...not just the individual song; 2) I overheard a number of people say that they were going to vacation near this church or that church, and couldn't wait to attend in person....so by singing a single well-loved worship song in our church over and over and seemingly supporting these churches, these folks were going to go to this church and hear heresy preached / modeled. It's more than the song; it's what is supported and represented by that song. (We no longer attend that church. We couldn't sit through the worship service any more. The Holy Spirit in us wouldn't let us.) 😥

I love watching your channel. I am SO SICK of everybody being called out as false teachers because of one sentence in a sermon. I like a lot of Hillsong and Elevation's music and I have tried to see what is wrong with it. Some people say it is too "me" centered, but my belief IS about me. Nobody can obtain salvation on my behalve. I have to believe, I have to put my faith it Christ. So if a song is about me and my experience of getting to faith, what exactly is wrong with it. I hate the channels who only exist to tear others down. We are suppose to be ONE Body and when I listened to "If we are the Body" by Casting Crowns I just realized how far we are missing the point. Maybe it is time for churchs to agree to disagree, (excluding obvious herecy) and stay in their lane. How about we try and win the world for Christ. I am bringing my testimony soon because I have survived thr rarest form of cancer and it is done by FAITH and PRAYERS only. Why can I not play the song "Million Little Miracles" by Elevation. I only see the small miracles now that I am a living testimony to a HUGE miracle.

The tone of your message and the spirit of assuming the best is good and I commend you for it-- but what could be a better example of your caveat: "excluding obvious heresy," than what comes out of these churches' preaching; not in just one sentence, but in their daily teaching? If Johnson, Olsteen, Hinn, Furtick, Wommack, Copeland, Falwell Jr., and others like them aren't heretics and false teachers-- regardless of whether a nice song comes out of their music business sometimes-- who is? And while personal music consumption is a personal choice for each of us to make, is it not also true that whoever goes to church and hears these songs can't just press 'skip'? The message that we are giving money to false prophets and planting seeds for people to engage with their false ministry whenever we play their music is needed for any elder board, worship pastor, or church administrator who will listen! And for any individual who might listen to them casually, which should happen first-- that they curiously look up the teaching of the church behind the music they like and get sucked in, or that someone warns them with Spirit-given discernment to flee? Churches aren't called to stay in their lane; the Church is called to discipline its own and bring what is wrong to light. If the elders at these churches won't hold their pastors accountable for lying in their sermons, or their deacons for 'grave-soaking' and 'manifesting', or their musicians for writing in hints of false belief in their songs-- the Church of Jesus still needs to engage in discipline. Otherwise we will be a laughingstock to the world and progressively ineffective at saving souls; and indeed that is already where this country's churches are headed, to the shame of the global, historical Church.

Here’s the thing: these songs weren’t written by churches, they were written by people. And if you go down this path, the nitpicking happens fast. What about the songwriters who aren’t associated with a church because they aren’t worship leaders? Should we get a doctrinal statement from them? Phil Wickham is a great songwriter who attends a solid church, so are we allowed to sing his songs except when he collaborates with someone from Bethel or Hillsong? What about when Chris Tomlin collaborates with someone? Is that song not allowed? What about when an artist goes solo? Are we allowed to listen to Brooke Ligertwood or Stefanie Gretzinger on their solo albums but not the songs they’ve written for their church worship teams? What about hymns written by people with questionable theology (looking at you, Horatio Spafford). It just doesn’t make sense to chase this rabbit down its trail. I would rather focus on the song itself. Is the theology sound? Does it speak truth that is consistent with Scripture? If we are going to have discernment, in my opinion that’s a much better way to do it because we are focused on God’s truth instead of the latest controversy, and it prepares us to reject new songs by other artists that are not consistent with Scripture.

If I could give this 12 thumbs up, I would. So what Holy Spirit has been teaching me lately. I'd been watching so many apologist videos about what is wrong that it was getting discouraging. The good part about that is that it sent me to my knees for them, for the people and churches talked about, and for my own budding attitude of finger-pointing angst. But, it also created a squashing of some joy and peace in my life. It wearied and depressed me. Until I just shut off the input about it and spent that time in continual prayer about it. Mind you, apologists do fabulous work to get our brains working, to cause us to be discerning. But, I need to keep my attitude in check as I watch.

I LOVE this video!! Your thoughts are really similar to mine when it comes to these Megachurch bands/songs. I am a huge music fan so it’s been a struggle after I became a new believer because these bands and songs were the first ones I was introduced to as a new Christian walking in my faith and I still do find myself listening to them when they pop up on my Spotify because it does bring me back to my salvation when I made the decision to be baptized. However, I have now expanded to listening to other worship music especially after the Hillsong ordeal and realizing that their message was not the best for me to “support.” This included praying about my decision not to attend their concert right around the time that documentary came out. I knew that I would be there to worship my savior and be in the presence of other believers but ultimately I couldn’t bring myself to support the message of the Megachurch itself. I agree with you that I will not endorse them but I will show grace for all because that is what we are called to do and so for me that means if they pop up on my playlist, I will listen and praise the one who created and saved me.

Think about it, why has Hillsong that much followers? Because they are biblical and follow Jesus BUT they are nor perfect, nor we. So they are doing mistakes and that’s „normal“ just God is perfect. Hi There is no need to dig deep into what the 'others' are saying about Hillsong. Most of their songs are Biblical. You cannot judge an individual worshiper by the doctrine of one of their many Pastors. If there was something wrong with the song that ministered to you the Spirit of God would have let you know. The fact that it did minister to you is the only witness you have. I have been troubled in my spirit about many "Christian Cancel Culture" videos. Some have said blatant lies about other believers while they ignore some inaccuracies in their own teaching which others are more mature and more gracious to overlook without cancelling them!

About 5 years ago, I decided to listen to random sermons from Hillsong Sunday morning services. Two of them ended up being heavy on giving to the church for God's blessing (they were chosen randomly months apart), and all three used verses out of context to prove Houston's main topic. He mishandled the word. It kinda sounded right, but in the end the sermons were all focused on elevating man and no focus/teaching about the Lord, his actual word, or his ways. Many critics would sum up the teachings as prosperity and word of faith teaching. The full gospel, the reason we even need a savior, as well as repentance are often missing and neglected.

Music is such a difficult thing to master. Even secular music can produce an emotional experience that seems very much like a spiritual experience. It’s also difficult to determine what very large organizations believe based on some isolated things that one or two people from them might say. I guess the question becomes, have I ever misspoke or made a mistake? I would hate to think that I would be judged for something I said in my youth and or ignorance. There are a lot of people calling out these organizations though. I just have to go to the source of truth. Jesus is the truth! If I abide in Him and His love, I will not be lead astray. If I base my beliefs on the large organizations or the people calling them out I am open to be tossed about by every wind of doctrine. Pray fervently in the Spirit and dig deep into the word and you will be free.

Whoa, awesome video. :) I really like your honest, yet humble opinion about Bethel, Hillsong and Elevation. The first two churches I have a lot of history with growing up in the pentaocostle movement since I was a young man in my early 20's until now in my early 30's. I have some thoughts on my own and feel free to comment on them. Thought 1 I haven't listened to Hillsong and Bethel for a long time, not really because of their theology being wrong, but more so, I just enjoy regular old psalms at the moment. Also, I have decided to hold back on Hillsong due to the scandal of the recent years. With that being said, I don't have an issue with people listening to Bethel, Hillsong and Elevation, since most of their songs have good theology that declares Jesus is lord, the power of the cross and biblical strong based songs. And yeah, there are some exceptions like the song, "Champion" from Bethel. Though I like the song and its structure, it's just bad theology. Sad but true. Thought 2 My problem with the three churches, is that I see some sort of worship of the churches instead of God. Like being a fan of football team and that franchise (Hope you get my analogy, also... Go Lions!), which I find very problematic since that'll leave out any ability to think critically of those church, should bad things occur... Or more like, when bad things will happen at some point. Thought 3 About Bethel, I also have my reservations about them and their theology. They, too, have times where it seems like they are preaching the gospel of prosperity and promising a lot in the name of Jesus, as if they where Jesus themselves, and thereby naming and claiming. But to be honest, haven't all preachers done that some point? In some way or another? I think so, since we are just humans and we make stupid mistakes "all the time". Therefore, I can't sit here and say people shouldn't listen to Bill Johnson etc., since I believe need to communicate, as entire body of Christ, so we can sharpen each other.

Our Pastors teach the Bible-book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. It is the mission statement for our station to lift up the name of Jesus and glorify God through teaching and music. Boldly proclaiming the Word of God in teaching and music. We need, as believers,to be discerning in these last days. The battle is real BUT my God-my Jesus is faithful. We do our part-He will do the sifting and separating. Chaff-wheat. Sheep-goats It’s between God and those who are going contrary to His word. He’ll call them out in His time and in His way. Why don’t we wear head coverings anymore? It is New Testament and because of the angles. Where does it tell us not to wear them? I would love to see a video on this.
@LettersFromAFriend
@LettersFromAFriend Год назад
Because nowhere does the Bible say that we should wear them. Paul wrote specifically to a congregation in Corinth, so they lived within Greek culture. Greek women at that time were supposed to stay within the house at all times (unless they really could not avoid a task that needed to be done elsewhere. So wives of rich men almost never left the house because they had slaves). A woman was the property of her husband. This culture was much more restrictive for women than the Jewish or Roman culture were. When a woman did leave the house, she had to cover her head - pulling a big sort of scarf all around her head (think tshador or hidjab, not nice little square of lace). Otherwise they would be seen als prostitutes. Now imagine this is where you come from, and now you hear that all are equal in Christ, that Christians are brothers and sisters in the Lord etc. You would realise that ist is entirely unnecessary to enshroud yourself like that. So they ask Paul about it, and he says: "You should keep wearing it if that is what people do where you live, because you don't want them to get us all wrong and think Christians are immoral people. There are actually a few points in favour of veiling, from a Christian point of view, so it is not an ungodly thing to do. However, in our Palestinian congregations, we don't do it." - I would conclude from this that Christian women and men should try to just not look outrageous to people from the culture they live in, and should avoid luxury and Bling-Bling, avoid drawing too (!) much attention on their bodily features, but don't necessarily need to cover their hair or dress like they are going to a funeral. Having said that, I think that wearing a moderate form of headcovering can (!) be beneficial sometimes if you live in a part of the world where this makes people recognise you as a Christian, as it may create situations in which you can share the gospel. It may also serve as a reminder to yourself. On the other hand, it may have an offputting effect on others ("If I have to run around looking weird, I 'm definitely not interested in christianity"). Or it may encourage a superficial approach towards faith where outward things become more important than what ist INSIDE a person. And it may encourage self-righteousness.

Complex subject, handled with grace and tact. I’m no theologian, but here’s my inexpert take: 1-This video led me to take a critical look at the lyrics of the songs I have on my Christian playlists, especially from these three churches. I deleted only one song (not from these three bands) that I felt was blatantly “prosperity gospel”. While I found several songs to be pretty shallow theology I didn’t find them heretical and I feel for my own listening they still lead me to worship God. I wouldn’t want to sing them in corporate worship, but for casual listening they sure beat Nirvana or The Rolling Stones (to randomly pick two secular bands). 2-Our Worship Pastor is very good at choosing worship songs that are deep and rich and God-centered, with sound theology. As a member of the worship team, if I hear something I question I will bring it (have done so in the past) to his attention. We should all be doing that. 3-If we as Christians believe questionable theology from a church just because we sang a song penned by a member of that church then shame on us (individual believer). We should always challenge bad theology and get guidance from friends we trust. But let’s not “throw out the baby with the bath water”.

Brandon is a grey area for me, as he publishes his music under Bethel Music Publishing. This means you still financially support the heretical teachings of the church though the artist's name isn't "Bethel." I've really been struggling with this recently because many of the well known independent artists are still supporting these big churches with false teachings.

Even if the song has good theology, CHURCHES should not use Bethel, Elevation, or Hillsong music in their church services, because young believers may think their church endorses those churches, and they don't have the discernment to see the heresy in the sermons of those churches.

I have a hard time with this because I'm on the worship team at my church, but i am not in a leadership role, nor do I have the "ear" of leadership. so we sing a LOT of songs from all of these churches. I love a lot of their songs too, but I know that singing those songs could lead people to listen to the church teachings. Our church does not teach the same things, it's very biblically sound, but they aren't really concerned about the songs themselves. Kinda stuck in a hard place for now.

But why is do we turn away from churches who are actively trying to fix their mistakes. We’re all human, we all make mistakes and Hillsong is trying to fix their mistakes, they are constantly teaching in their sermons ‘lately’ and I do say LATELY to question everything that you hear. Therefore I don’t think it’s okay to listen to the music if yes they money does go to them as long as we don’t start worshipping the man behind the message! Always check the message the church is sending, even your own pastor’s should be advising us to question it, go back to God ask Him is this message right? Test it against the Bible. Thank you again Faith, God bless you 🙏 the boys and Pastor Joe ❤️

Really hope they finally do changes now that the documentary is out. I decided not to listen to them 15 years ago due to their ongoing sin and because it is ongoing (not a one time occurrence), I don't consider it a mistake anymore but a symptom of a deeper issue. It is anecdotal, but I come from a church with ongoing sexual misconduct/sin/abuse/cover-up (and other issues), years of it, I stayed until I did not see the point and it was hurtful. It is ok not to support such a church until they fix their problems. It is ok to turn away and support other ministries (better ones!). It is not ok to abandon all church all together. If Jesus wants to redeem that church, He doesn't need you and you should take responsibility for where your money goes as it is God's.

@@sae4842 You’re exactly right! I struggle because I was brought up in Hillsong and I see so so many things wrong with it and I see them trying to change and I want to support that but I just feel like it’s not the place for me. That being said, I love their music and I agree as Faith said that each song we listen to a cent of that goes toward the preaching and that is essentially incorrect preaching but if we try to look past that and look at just how many people have been saved because of this music and we’re talking millions then that can only be good can’t it. On we go in our journey and battle to follow Jesus and His teachings and not those of men….

I think every song should be taken on it's own merits. What if you love the song and you heard it as a cover version but never knew the author? I do not know who wrote "how great thou art" and what his life and belief was about but that song is ministering to me. There are many accounts in the bible where God the Father uses people with evil motives for His good. I always encourage people to be like the Bereans and fact-check everything for themselves as they did Paul's preaching. To judge music/ preaching/ doctrine/ food/ drink....etc. on merit as Paul stated rather boldly in 1 Timothy 4:4-5 that everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. I think discernment is key when faced with an album that has 1 good song with sound doctrine out of the rest created by perhaps good God fearing people who fall under questionable leadership. The problem I see is if someone hears one good Hillsong track from me and decides to buy their album and attend their services. Have I caused them to stumble? Believe it or not, Jesus is at Bethel, Hillsong and Elevation...etc because I can guarantee you that even there, 2 or more gather in His name. Forgive me scatter-brained logic, it comes from a place of love, searching, learning, as well as sincerity and stands under correction.

I wrestled with this same question not too long ago when I purchased tickets for a Hillsong concert and the documentary came out right before the concert. I sat and prayed and ultimately the decision was not to attend. I don’t regret it and I look forward to another time when I can worship with other believers at a different experience/concert but right now what I experience from the Holy Spirit when worshipping Jesus at my church fills up my cup to show grace and love to others.

Thanks for treating this topic so kindly. I would love to share with you another perspective.I recently watched your video about Calvinism vs Armenianism and I we have a similar paradox that sounds heretical to you. Bill Johnson has never said that Jesus wasn't God, just that Jesus limited his God-ness when he was on earth not that he gave it up. For example, it would be ridiculous to think baby Jesus would start walking or talking on day 1 of being on the earth. Could he do it, of course, he was God. Would he have done it? No, he was chosing to live a human life, to be the perfect example of what we can all aspire to. In John 5:19 it says that he can do nothing on his own but only does what the father is doing. Of course he is capable of doing anything and everything, he is God. But he was choosing to limit himself so that when we ask the question, what would Jesus do, it is possible for us follow in his footsteps because he was living as a man, connected by the Holy Spirit to the Father. I know you might not agree with this. But I wanted you to be aware that the difference in theology is more subtle than you might have originally thought. Thanks for your amazing videos that encourage us to go deeper in the Word. 😁

Lol do you think Paul was worried about being accused of cancel culture when calling out the sin of the churches he was writing to? No. We can't be worried about hurting feelings when there is obvious unbiblical teachings in a church. It's our job to lovingly call out unhealthy teachings and to point it out to others, that they wouldn't be tricked into believing it. The prosperity gospel is NOT the gospel, in fact it is exactly the opposite; and we should never tiptoe around that fact.

I hear this all the time about preachers like Joyce Meyer (that I love) and Todd White, Joel Ostean hillsong etc because they are "mega churches" I don't think a church is bad just because it's large. And I think these people are Humans and are still learning. I don't agree with everything these people say and of course if someone is committing adultery or their sermons are all about how to just get God's blessings and favor etc. Or are saying something completely off the wall you might avoid them or take what they sat with a grain of salt but these yourubers that just "call out false teachers" isn't a great idea. When we get to the throne someday we aren't going to be asked about Joyce or Joel or Beth or anybody else. But our life. I pray about it if I'm confused by what a pastor is saying there's so many people saying different things sometimes. Like healing "it's always God's will to heal if you recieve it" "no.. healing not part of the atonement.. we are healed when we get to heaven" " everyone gets healed! God never says no" " sometimes God says no" and Tithing and wealth anything. I ask God what HE says about it and ask him to show what he means in his word.
