Well done. You’re a fishing MythBuster! It’s nice to find somebody that doesn’t follow the status quo, understands the fundamentals of the equipment and technology we use on the water and is willing to share. You just saved me a lot of time fishing cables. Thank you.

Brian, by far the best explanation I've seen! Clarified a ton!! P1 is currently mounted on bow next to xi3. Experienced exactly what you explained with the boat tracking sideways but was fine when trolling motor was deployed. Ended up sourcing heading from console lowarance to resolve. Will be moving P1 to rear deck nearest transducer as possible and trying to source for heading again. Thanks a million!!

Good video and 100% spot on! 👍 It actually should be as close to the transducer as possible but without magnetic interference.

Brian, can you explain how you mounted the Point-1 ensuring that the arrow was parallel to the boat centerline? Thanks

I eye balled it within a few degrees and then any error i adjusted in the graph for the correction. I think it is called magnetic heading offset in the graph settings.

I don't really have a working knowledge of exactly how the Point 1 works but, 1) I thought it got heading from GPS and satellite triangulation, not magnetic north? I don't see how it could be that sensitive to magnetic interference, but like I said, I'm not really sure how it works. And 2) if you actually had strong enough magnetic interference, like say from the trolling motor if you mounted the Point 1 on the bow, wouldn't that literally lock your heading relative to the position of the trolling motor? I'm about to mount a Point 1 and went all over my boat with a compass. Anywhere near the trolling motor and the compass locked directly away from the trolling motor, which means, if I mounted it on the bow, it would always show the boat heading the same, never changing, particularly when the trolling motor was up and in extremely close proximity to the antenna, wouldn't it? Seems like if that was the case, Lowrance would advise against mounting a Point 1 on the bow of a bass boat, but I do see them there quite a bit.

Gps can only show direction when moving, an unavoidable limitation of gps. This is why the p-1 is so handy it has a built in magnetic heading sensor. It so direction boat is pointed while completely still. Sometimes when you see them mounted in the bow it is a gps only puck or is used for the trolling motor and not for the graph and never realize they have mag interference.

... Are you on, "North up", "Track Up or, "Course Up"? Interested if you try those different setting just to see if there is a difference. .North up will keep the screen from turning/moving. I am going to try this the next time on the boat on the trailer. .

Brian, I seem to be having trouble marking waypoints and riding back over them as soon as I mark them and being able to find them on my trolling motor. Any idea why this might be? My front unit is using the internal GPS, and heading from the point 1 which is mounted in my rear splashwell. The point 1 works well, and doesn't seem to have interference. I can understand the waypoint "drifting" after a few days or due to conditions, but within a couple of minutes it takes me to turn the boat around and get on the trolling motor, to try and ride over it and see the pile on my front unit. Any tips?

I don’t see how you could ever find a brush pile with that kind of accuracy.
@dv6000hp
@dv6000hp 5 лет назад
Depends on how big the brush pile is. Any "cilvian" GPS will have this kind of accuracy. Just the way it is.

are you saying I should not waste 200 bucks on a point one?? If I cant stay on my way points any closer than you are showing in this video why should I spend the money?
@dv6000hp
@dv6000hp 6 лет назад
James Craig No absolutely not. The heading sensor is a great tool. I will not have a boat without a point-1 now. My point of the video was how people always saying to mount point-1 as close as possible to the transducer for accuracy of the waypoint marked is just not true.

Brian, Your are way over thinking it. Your concern about magnetic interference is not meaningful to bass boats. On the back deck the interference is more likely to occur from the sun than other electronics. I have run the numbers on my equipment. Put the point one on the rear deck as close to the trans as you can. Great analysis but again over thinking it.
@dv6000hp
@dv6000hp 6 лет назад
peteuk1988 Actually to many people online facebook and other forums complain about going sideways down the lake and cannot calibrate the point-1. Avoiding magnetic interference is number 1 priority when installing the point-1. Unless you don't care about using the heading sensor. The sun has no effect on the magnetic heading sensor in the point-1. Or even the GPS in the antenna for that matter.

Way over thinking it. Turn off the look ahead setting. Problem solved. Not sure how your horn can cause interface unless you use it alot.
@dv6000hp
@dv6000hp 6 лет назад
William Snyder The horn has a magnet in it, just like your trolling motor and starter in engine. Plus any electrically generated magnetic interference. Turn off look ahead?? What does that have to do with it? Absolutely nothing! It is not over complcated at all. Just trying to keep people from drilling holes in there boat needlessly by proving GPS is not pinpoint accurate. And no need to get it as close as possible to transducer! If it works out being close to transducer with no mag interference, than great!
@wilsterone6689
@wilsterone6689 6 лет назад
Brian O'Dell your horn and starter have electromagnets in them. They are not magnetic until you provide electricity no interface when not in use. Your trolling motor has permanent magnets that cannot be turned off. Interface all the time.
@dv6000hp
@dv6000hp 6 лет назад
William Snyder Sorry William you could not be more wrong. Have you never heard of permanent magnets. Some people use them to on there fridge! Your starter, trolling motor and even horns like mine have permanent magnets. Heck even a few of my baitcasters have them. And they will interfere with a heading sensor. Depending on strength of magnetic field and proximity to the sensor.
@dv6000hp
@dv6000hp 6 лет назад
William Snyder What you are describing is an electromagnet. And they also cause interference. You trolling motor, starter use electro and permanent magnets.
@wilsterone6689
@wilsterone6689 6 лет назад
Brian O'Dell If you would have read my entire response you would have noticed that I mentioned permanent magnets. Horns and starters have electromagnets that only create magnetic fields when electricity is applied. If your horn were to cause the issue with your GPS it would only happen why honking the horn.
