Should You Oil Your Poker Chips?

Use mineral oil, NOT Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) - which is a fire hazard and will ruin your chips!
Mineral oil can be found as a laxative or baby oil. Be careful or your chips will smell of squished babies... how else would they get the oil out of them?

Ooookay...where to begin... - I agree w/John - the *only* oil you should ever consider using is plain ol' mineral oil. I'd even stay away from baby oil. Even if you like the smell of it, your other players may not. - I strongly advise against oiling China clay chips. It will do nothing for the smell - so far, the only thing that I've found to impact the smell of the CC's is a vinegar bath for about 20 seconds - and since CC's have a higher plastic content than actual clay, the oil tends to reside on the surface of the chips more than soak into it. There *are* some that have found a method or two for oiling CC's w/o them being left feeling too slippery, however A) I don't believe them based off their pictures (the "finished" chips look entirely too wet to me), and B) these methods are more time/labor intensive than those for normal compression clay chips. - If you're going to oil chips from Atlantic Standard/Classic Poker Chips, only put on a light coat on the edges, then wipe off any excess with a clean, dry rag. There is no need to oil the faces of ASM/CPC chips. - Old TRKing chips on the large crown mold soak up oil like mad. Be prepared to reapply it somewhat frequently on those. - Used, cleaned Paulsons benefit greatly both in look and feel with a coat of oil. Again, always use the oil sparingly! The goal is *not* to make them slippery (the whole reason for texture on ceramic chips and cross-hatching on compression clays is to keep them stable in stacks...casino-quality chips were meant to stick together, not slip apart easily). Besides, too much oil will then transfer from chips, to hands, to cards, and you don't want your good, plastic playing cards getting too oily. - I recommend using a shoe polish applicator for the oil. Just drop 2-3 drops of oil on the sponge & wipe the edges in stacks. One drop is sufficent for the faces, but the problem there is efficiency. If you use only one drop, then you'll have to take more time to properly cover the entire face of a chip. If you use two drops then you can cover the face more quickly, however you'll likely get too much oil on the chips and have to wipe down all the faces with a secondary cloth to remove the excess. Oiling chip faces flat sucks, but sometimes if they're too dry/too old then the results are worth it.

Observations from a Milano set owner. I have a 2000 chip set. Milanos are a bit notorious for coming with that white-chalky look. I personally don't mind it. After playing with Milanos, over time, the chalky look naturally goes away, as oils from players hands essentially "oil" the chips. The reason I do oil my Milanos is because there is such a drastic difference in the appearance of "played with" Milanos and new "out of the wrapper" Milanos. I continue to add different denominations and increase my supply of Milanos. When I get a new order of chips, it's almost comical how un-matched the old and new chips appear. The only way to make the chips match appearance-wise is oiling them. Once oiled, they match perfectly and really have a beautiful appearance. My oiling technique is pretty simple. I get two large rags. Oil the first one. Leave the second one dry. I rub each chip with the oiled rag. The chip is fairly saturated and appears wet. After oiling each chip, I set it on a long sheet of paper towels. Once I have about 100 chips oiled and resting on the paper towels, I then take the dry rag and wipe each chip until it is "dry." The appearance of Milanos after oiling - in my opinion - is beautiful and much improved from the white/chalky look coming out of the plastic wrapper. I would also put a plug in for Milano chips in general. Fantastic chip.

WW - did you find that oiling made the colors pop more on the Milanos?

Yes, without a doubt. The chips brighten up and "pop" when oiled.

I just received my 1st 1,000ct of MILANO chips.... they're great..! but i did notice some "shine" better than the new wrapped chips, now I'm thinking I may need to apply a "small" amount of oil to them for that show room shine.. do you notice playing cards affected by this..? perhaps "sticking" a bit from chip to card oil transfer..? that would be my only concern for using oil...

I WATCHED A FEW VIDEOS ON THIS. I saw some others using vegetable oil. I didnt have either of these so i actually used olive oil. It almost completely eliminated the china clay smell from the Milanos and the Crown Casino's

I used olive oil as well, as I simply couldn´t find a shop who actually sold "Mineral oil". Worked out just fine.

Does the chips gets a bit "sticky" after you oiled them, or does the stickiness wear of using them?

I oiled a set of Paulson starbursts (a set which had never been used) and I must say they both look much better-their color is much more vivid, in a pleasing way. It also softened up how they moved a bit. I can see your reasoning for not oiling, however. The efficient way to oil chips is to get one of those round foam shoe polishers. This allows you to quickly hit a large number of chips in a short time. I lay them down on an old sheet, folded over a couple times; and when I flipped each chip I gave it a spins the oiled side would get rubbed against the sheet. That process was repeated for the next side. I didn’t worry much about the edges, as they got plenty oiled just through handling during this process. I did find it takes some time for these to dry fully, unless you want to hand-rub each one.

What do you guys think about how apachepokerchips.com recommends to oil your chips? They say to put 2 tablespoons of mineral oil in a pot of warm water and soak a bunch of them for 30 seconds then towel dry them.

Oiled 500 milanos...... Twice. Complete waste of time. Playing with them gets rid of the smell and chalky powder.

I have to disagree. The appearance of Milanos changes drastically and immediately when oiled. For the better in my opinion.

I'm looking for a good poker chips set and just got in a sample of Nexgen pro classics which I think are great but I hate the chalky film. Should I just use water and a rag to clean them off or should I use oil??
