I play a few different games, but all of them are skirmish-level games... This Is Not A Test, Stargrave, Killteam, Space Weirdos, Planet 28, and Reign In Hell. The nice thing is, most of the games I play are sci-fi or at least sci-fi-ish so I can swap minis and terrain between them pretty easily. I can even use my demons from Reign In Hell as aliens or just "space demons" for some generic grimdark goodness.

That's a big reason I am sticking with miniatures agnostic games as much as I can, with very few exceptions. Being able to use a squad of humans with spears and shield between 4 or 5 published rule sets is such a blessing - all I need is a movement tray to fit their bases on!

I totally get this reason. But tell me if anyone else has the same experience as me. Everyone at my local shop that plays one game ends up with five to ten factions for that game. I play four different games. I only collect one faction in each. I am spending less money and playing more games. Is the better question "how many armies do you play?"

Good points. I think one of the most salient ones you touched on was that for the really high level competitive players, in order to be "good" are playing the rules primarily and whatever game it is as a secondary consideration. At that level I have to say that's a different hobby than the one I enjoy but that's ok. Everybody can enjoy whatever they want. Cheers!

I also like the buffet and the "buffet". Variety has been said, is the spice of life. I also enjoy the camaraderie of the hobby and friendships formed out of it. From talking about collecting armies, sharing tips for painting, watching a young painter or player getting better at the hobby, hearing about a combination of tactics that worked in a game or a story of great exploits of one character during a game are all wonderful moments within the hobby. That's why I like to play several games, even if it's just scratching the surface of some of them so I can find common ground. It's also why I love building DIY Terrain or customizing store bought terrain. It's become a social outlet for me and I recognize the value in that, especially within the confines of the latest health crisis. Also, loved the ending of this video.

I've played one page a few time (Grimdark Future). It's fun, and pretty simple. Easy to learn, etc. The only issue I had, was it got stale pretty quick, due to the lack of special characters/rules like Warhammer offers. If you're new to the hobby, I strongly recommend one page rules. If after a few games you're enjoying it, then great! It's an easy and affordable way to play. But, if you're left wanting more depth, then you can look into other games that will have a lot more rules. But playing one page will make learning those other games a lot easier, I would think.

Granted they were games I got into before I got into the one I can play now. So in some sense it was my gateway drug so I can’t regret doing it. I don’t know what the best answer is honestly. I have plenty of other things to paint and I have not been pushing myself very much. But when I am painting it is a great release and so enjoyable. I started 18 months ago, have had a health issue interrupt, but have completed 31 models from Hell Brute to Pox Walkers and am just finishing up some Blight Drones. So do you think it is a good idea to restrict yourself to one project at a time? Of course the next problem is what next? Finish my Desert Rats, do Blood Bowl team, Sisters or Mechanicus. I think the major limiting factor for why a lot of people don't play more games is more often than not you're limited by what your friends want to play or what stores/clubs in your local area play. For instance I'd love to to give warmahordes a go, but none of my friends are interested, and all stores and clubs in my area play is 40k, AoS, MtG, and bolt action. I have been able to get a couple of them to try kings of war and another friend got me to play gaslands, both of which I enjoy but I'm definitely putting more into the former as I enjoy wargames a lot more than skirmish games.

Listening to your points I suddenly realised a major difference between the historicals and the fantasists. Fantasy/Sci-Fi gamers follow the rule writers, in historical games the rules follow us. I suppose, and please correct me if I'm wrong, without the 'coda' fantasy and sci-fi doesn't have a consistent basis for the game. If historical rules change we have the history to fall back on. Where, one assumes, the rivet counters have little sway amongst fantasy players but you are beholden to a subjective outside commercial and lore/rule writing force. Historical players are most definitely in the thrall of rivet counters but owe nothing to commercial and rule writing forces as the historical facts generally trump all. Interesting article 👍

BOOM. Nailed it. I agree wholeheartedly. It's far easier for me to write scenarios for historical games than for sci-fi games because I can always fall back on the history to fit the rule set. Not the other way around.

A wizard mini can be used in Age of Sigmar or Warcry, but also Frostgrave or Mordheim, or in D&D, or in One Page Rules's Age of Fantasy, or even arguably some Sci Fi games (depending on how they look and what you have to work with).

I'm currently not playing any games, because there's no groups locally (that I can find), no clubs (that make themselves known), my usual gaming buddy (20 miles away) has given up and decided standing around in a charity shop all day twiddling his thumbs is more entertaining, and the pandemic! Small town Mid-North Essex, UK is a wasteland when it comes to trying to get a game. Despite the affluence of the town I live in. There must be some GW patrons though because we have a GW reseller with a GW stand in his shop! I've got several games, nearly none of them current GW titles though. Warhammer Quest '95, Battlefleet Gothic, Necromunda 2003, Warlord's Judge Dredd, Blood Bowl, Aeronautica Imperialis (the Wings of Vengeance set), Space Hulk 4th edition, 1st edition WFRP. I've given up though and just become a miniature collector, not much of a choice really, currently collecting, on a very limited budget, "monsters" for Warhammer Quest '95 and a Warhammer Fantasy Battles Empire Army (yeah I know, they got squatted and what was left became Free Peoples).

Regarding diversification vis-a-vis new editions, your [Previous Number] Edition 40k book is readily available on eBay or is even still on your shelf; the game can still be played. You didn't 'lose' your hobby. I have a shelf of 1st edition White Wolf books that say so.

Dammit, Atom. This is the second time in a week you're saying exactly the thing I need to hear. I feel like I've trapped myself in my first game, which I like ... sometimes ... and I'm trying to give myself permission to play something else. Also -- what are those blue robot-looking models at the 8:07 mark? In general, I'm a "paint the minis so I can play the game" kind of guy, but those look cook enough I might paint them just to paint them.

That's why I don't play games with dedicated models and only go with historicals. This way you can use them for whatever system that is bases on the period. I mean- a Roman army will always have legioneries, a Viking army will always have bondi and hirdmen- no matter the system. I mostly play skirmish games with my Saxons and Vikings, but I can put them on movement trays, and now I can play a mass battle system. My terrain works for everything. This way we can test multiple systems and decide which one feels right.

Sometimes you want a meal, sometimes you want a snack. For me it depends on where my mood shifts, have I been watching sci-fi? What type, space soldiers fighting aliens or battle fleets. The same with historical, horse and musket or sailing ships (I guess I need some old west stuff too). Thus I look for rules light and/or mini agnostic.

I have to admit I have the luxury of choice in systems and clubs as I attend two different clubs a week. I've invested in 40k, age of sigmar, war cry and lord of the rings. For me it's about keeping things fresh every week. Playing 1 system week on week I burn out, so to change up every week is nice. Also the hobby feeds into the game so painting up gondorians I crave playing LOTR and visa versa. The possible negative with this is getting your value for money because if you have just 1 system you get ya bang for ya buck, but with multiple at any give time you can have 1 or 2 systems sat on a shelf. It why I make a point on playing twice a week with 2 systems of the 4 systems I own. Also it's different opponents and ok so I lost a game of 40k on Wednesday but I won a game of lord of the rings Thursday night. I don't feel like it's been a bumhole week of gaming as I won and lost and used two different armies and systems and enjoyed both.

I switched to skirmish rules (like Adv Song of Blades and Heroes) or solo play (5 Parsecs from Home) which let me use my Boardgame Minis (i.e. Descent / Zombicide Invader). Or just something from the hidden box of Necromunda, Frostgrave, Blackstone stuff I keep in my cave. GW is redoing their rulesets and releasing new editions faster than I can get into (painting all stuff and setting up armies) that game. So I stopped buying GW stuff as you are forced to buy unless you play at home with a fixed ruleset. And I like to play for fun, not with a blade between my teeth.

Honestly I don't play any games at all. Not cause I don't enjoy them but I don't know anyone in my area that plays games. I just moved half way across the country and so I of course don't know anyone. I buy miniatures to paint cause I enjoy painting but my local game store doesn't do anything to connect players in the area to play games together. I visit the store at least once a week to buy miniatures and/or paints and I have only seen one game of anything played in the store since I moved almost 5 months ago. I would like to learn to play wargames but there isn't really a place for me to connect with people so I can learn/play

Here's a thought for people who only play one game - if a next edition comes out and you don't like it - stay playing the edition you did like. I know people who still play 3rd Edition 40K - and why not? I think it's foolish to say your hobby is dead if you only play one game and you don't like the newest edition. Just don't upgrade. You can always still collect the miniatures.

My Necromunda gang works for stargrave as well probably for plenty of things. Building some fantasy stuff at the mo. Works for Mordheim, warcry and frostgrave. Sure I could find many more systems. Don't obsess with what the mini is or what system it was made for. Someone with a ray gun or shotgun a big melee weapon etc will transfer over easily enough even if not armed exactly as described. Undo the brainwashing of GW telling you only specific official mini's can be used.
