Should you RECORD VIDEO with an SSD DRIVE ?
Multiple Cameras such as Blackmagic and Z Cam are supporting to record on an SSD.
SSD's are small relatively affordable and have high capacities. But is it better to record on an SSD apos to an internal memory card?

I have used T5 1Tb in client jobs and own shortfilms. Been shooting every bitrate and BRAW with BMPCC4K, long takes and short. Never any problems. I have secured both ends of the cable with clamps that I can't unplug either of the ends during shooting. Eventhough I have also made a stress test before actual jobs with the drive by disconnecting on the fly, during recording, shutting down camera in the middle of recording. Never lost anything from the drive. I have bad experiences with SD cards in the past. Cases where I have lost all material thanks to corruption during shutdown. Professional data rescue companies tried to save anything but no luck. They told me regarding to their experience that better luck is usually with SSD, spinning drives or CF cards. SD cards are kind of worst media when troubleshooting and data rescue is needed. Also have good experience with CF cards the worst you can do to them is force insert wrong way in the card reader and those pinholes get damaged. I've seen this happen in the past.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. Yes SD cards are unpredictable sadly :) glad to hear also some good experiences with the T5 and bmpcc :)

This is a real issue. If you take any external ssd and do a long continuous file movement to or from the drive, it will start to slow down after a bit and will get warm. With some high bit rate codecs you might get to enough of a slow down where you will get a record failure or corruption. I use a T5 on my BMPCC 6k Pro with the 12:1 Raw compression so the bit rate isn’t nearly as high as the 5:1 for example so I never have had an issue. But I could see this potential problem with a 3:1 or 5:1 on the SSD with a long recording. If you are taking short takes of 3 minutes or less at a time it should not be a problem.

I've been using a T5 for over a year now and I love it! I have to say that I record using a BlackMagic VideoAssist, so that does the heavy lifting. It's running smooth as heck, only if you have a lot of clips on the drive makes it a little slower on startup, but otherwise performance is awesome!

Recorded hundreds of hours on Samsung T5 on my BMPCC6k. It never slowed or stopped recording. Most of the recordings were 1h20m. Or 4 recrodings of 20minutes each after another. Few times I've recorded for 3h+ (concert). But I got some problems recording to Crucial MX500 1TB drive via Atomos ... it's either the thermal problem as you stated here or the drive has not been trimmed correctly.

@@pauleporterdp Oh, and fun fact is, that Crucial MX500 but 500GB does not have any problems. Recorded it all over at least 20 times ... never a dropped frame (via Atomos).

SSD's are very often used to record 4k video of games very often, I used to use a 1tb 500gb ssd for video recording for years and had no issues.

I had some frame dropping recording with an ssd samsung t7 but then I noticed that the problem often appeared when having a lower voltage output from the battery, then I ran a lot of tests in different formats using the BMPCC 6k directly plugged to the wall, and no issues at all, so maybe the problem relies on the power supply not the external recorder.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes power supply could also be a factor but also the drive itself

@@pauleporterdp - Thanks for the video, there is surprisingly little coverage on this topic in youtube. Just thinking if the point here might be worth a further test/video. I think one could use a workflow where one uses larger capacity V-mount batteries, and only uses one till half full. And then rotate that half full battery to lights etc. and take a new one for the camera. Obviously not optimal, but perhaps still doable. I would also be interested in of how frequently does a drop frame happen. Coming from Eos M / Magic lantern community, we have sort of learned to live with those, unless they are there all the time.

Hi Paule, I just filmed with an old dslr. In the sd card, I installed magic lantern to lower the cbr and allow continuous filming beyond 30min. What it does is, when it reaches 30min, it creates a new file. This worked well. BUT, when I tried to transfer the data from the sd card into the computer, after I cut and paste a single file, the sd card became corrupt. The sd reader, in my opinion, looks a bit flimsy. My question is 1) What is the most reliable sd card reader, and 2) is there a better option than filming on sd cards?

Thanks mate. So I can recommend SanDisk Cards I never had an issue with those. But in your scenario there is only recording to SD cards. As always a good card goes a long way.

Interesting. One of my viewers just asked if he could record from Cell Phone video to SSD directly. I just tested Android 3rd party app "Open Camera" to record onto a Sandisk 1TB SSD with my Galaxy S21. The app was lagging massively, but the video did store on my SSD. I personally don't trust this setup from phone to SSD bc it risks corruption or app crash, so I would rather record directly from native camera to phone storage, then transfer files to SSD which shouldnt take too long.

My dude if you open up the sdd's in an Atomos you'll find the same ssd's then those. Not sure why you're getting errors but I've never had a problem with ssd's for 6k raw
@michael-freeman
@michael-freeman 2 года назад
Don't agree. Never had a problem or dropped a frame with SSD's, using it with my Red or an Atomos Ninja. Recovery of a failed SD or CF drive is a true pain but fairly easy on a SSD. I did had issues from time to time with CF and SD cards and that's why I went exclusively to SSDs. Suggesting using high end SSDs with actual DRAM cache.

Good for you. I told my version and I had issues and friends of me too. So the fact that you didn’t have any issue’s doesn’t mean that they don’t exist and it also doesn’t mean that I don’t know what I’m talking about. I also said in the video it can work for you but there are always two sides of a story and my intention is to tell the viewers the possibilities and then they can make an informed decision.
