In today’s interview I get to speak with a life sciences entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Seed, Raja Dhir, about how the use of suitable probiotics can improve our microbiome and help optimise our overall well being.
Raja is very passionate about how various microbiomes can improve human health.
Increasingly we hear about the ‘good’ bacteria and the ‘bad’ bacteria that make up the microbiome in our bodies and how important they are to our health.
Today, we talk more about the new research linking bacteria to various diseases and how the right probiotics can help us feel better by creating a more balanced system.
But do these supplements actually work and does everyone benefit from taking one? Dhir helps us sift through all the marketing gimmicks and choose a probiotic strain that works for us.
If you know someone who is interested in learning more about:
👉What are probiotics
👉What is the difference between probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics
👉Fermented foods vs probiotics
👉What to look out for when choosing the right probiotic
👉Are there any risk factors with taking probiotics
👉Could probiotics replace medications in certain conditions and what role do they play in disease
👉What are CFU and AFU numbers and what do they tell us
👉Should we ALWAYS take probiotics after antibiotics
👉What is the best way to take probiotics
Then this interview is for them.
I really enjoyed this interview with Raja and have learned a lot. He shared details on this somewhat complex subject matter in a clear and concise way that I am sure will help many of us come to a better understanding of how we can make better use of probiotics.
Special thanks to Raja joining me on the show.

I was on antibiotics for 4 weeks and developed cdiff even though I was on probiotics. What could I have done differently to have healed faster?

I was on antibiotics for 10 days after I had fractured my forearm with exposed bone. I took a high quality probiotic for 2 months plus I also started to consume home made kefir and homemade yogurt. In about 6 weeks my stool went from marbles to sausage like. I still consume my kefir and yogurt to ensure I'm getting probiotics. I also consume green bananas in my smoothies (including the peel). I also consume potato salad made with olive oil. These are prebiotic foods that supposedly feed the good gut bacteria. I also consume a lot of homemade fermented foods like Kimchi, carrots, salsa, etc.

Did you also take the probiotics for 1 to 2 weeks after the antibiotic cycle?

@@robin2604 I took 90 days worth of probiotics to finish the bottle. One each morning on an empty stomach. I used Dr. Mercola's 70billion brand. Even though my stool was normal after about 6 weeks, I decided to use up the 90 day supply. During that time I also started to make yogurt. After that I also started to make my own Kefir. I did this to maintain my gut bacteria. Because I live in a country that does not allow raw milk, I used the best organic milk I could find.

@@allenmiller2071 Oh cool, was talking to Michelle though. Dam your probiotic game is on point lol. I'm on a hefty antibiotic cycle myself now due to infected knee wounds. Just eating a bunch of yoghurt every day but I'm planning on doing pro biotics for a week or 2 after I'm done with the anti biotics

"Fermented foods aren't probiotics".... He lost me right there.

if a bacteria reaches stomach, it will be killed by stomach acid. so a real probiotic must be first of all encapsulated.

@@zambrocca So, there are zero probiotic yeast and bacteria existing in the human gut.....unless we pay for a capsule? God has provided what we need on this earth for free. No need to purchase a bottle of capsules. Kind regards, and wishing you and yours fantastic health in 2020.

No no, you misunderstand. Probiotic goes from mother to the baby during pregnancy, at birth through vagina and from the milk during breastfeeding, only in those cases no need for pills. Consider also that a Probiotic should be made with human bacterial, while most of so called probiotics are made from pig.
