Should You Use A Compensator On Your Everyday Carry? 

Technical comment: Some shots showed zero muzzle flash while others showed lots. I suspect this is due to frame rate. The flash is very short, and may not be seen at normal speed and frame rate. Slow motion filming will capture more of the muzzle flash and probably allow a more detailed examination of muzzle rise.

I carry a 365 everyday, bought an extended threaded barrel a comp and a spring kit and it improved it 100% and it is only about an inch longer.

Always buy one with a built in compensator. The fact it keeps it flatter is a no brainer. It’s the reason I bought my performance center.

If you’re in a fire fight, muzzle flash should be the last of your concern. Cover and concealment will help with you moving to various fighting positions. Train, train and more training. Of course if you’re shooting +P ammo, then that will affect your recoil impulse and the 3 inch barrel’s are very snappy. My daily CCW is either 3.6 or 4 inch barrel and once in a while I’ll carry my 5 inch pistol. I’m 6,4 and I carry appendix for the last 36 years. I had a Glock 43 and I hated it, even after I had modified with stippling, extended magazines, talon tactical grip tape. And nothing made it better. My 9mm ammunition is 147 grain hollow point and my .45 ammunition is 230 grain hollow point.

Personally, if I had to use my EDC to save my life, my least concern would be the danger in shooting a comp close to the body. I'd be happy to be alive, even with a burn or what-have-you.

I say, carry the biggest gun that you can conceal and shoot well. Most people aren’t in the position to shoot all the time to maintain proficiency with a specific handgun. This was a good example. The P365 may be easier to conceal but it was also harder to shoot accurately. Kayde immediately shot the X-Macro better without the need to a recent range visit. So carry that. Personally, I adjust my wardrobe to fit the smallest gun I can shoot well on a cold start. I don’t adjust my carry to fit my wardrobe and hope that I shot it recently enough to be on target. I carry the Spectre Comp with an X-Macro grip. Why not carry something that’s easier to shoot well?

It comes down to training. If a comp is easier for you to shoot. Then you will shoot more and train more. That equates to shooting better. Period

Comps definitely help with recoil/muzzle flip and do have their pros and cons like everything else. They also just make the profile of the gun look amazing and futuristic. Results very with each gun so it’s up to the shooter to figure out if it’s worth it or not for their gun.

This shows exactly the benefits of Sig's slide comp, its as reliable, has a small size profile, and flashes as much as a standard p365.

Considering I have a lifted pavement princess, that tears through town, but can’t do 55 on the hwy, of course it is a “compensator” for my everyday carry.

If you're running a comp with the factory recoil spring you're doing it wrong. When you redirect the gas you gotta lighten that spring to compensate for your compensator. They're basically as reliable as the stock firearm with a little diligent tuning. For my fully aftermarket p320 x-carry i got all available spring weights for the replacement rod and have to swap them out for specific ammo. Once i figured out which spring works with the different loads i use i haven't had a single failure in 750-900rds or so. More than enough for me to confidently carry it.

I don’t think it’s a good idea. I have personally caught copper in the eyebrow with a comp’d Glock 26 working close retention drills. You could train to always rotate your wrist to avoid this when shooting off the rib, but in a real situation, you may not be able to rotate to avoid fragments in the face at close retention. I like the recoil reduction but it’s a “no” from me for EDC.

Would have liked to see you shoot the DR920P. It’s definitely more of a competition style gun rather than a carry but definitely the nicest gun on the table.

But for nights, no comp as it's blinding to the shooter. Nice group of guns there! Cheers!

First, if you want us to see the flash profile, get a camera with a much higher frame rate. Most of the flashes were not recorded as they were between frames. As far as compensator, it's up to the individual. The important point is train with what you carry, and carry what you train with. That last bit, you finally got around to saying. Good points on pros and cons. Cons outweigh the pros for me. To answer your question, no comp. If it takes more than 2 shots, you're giving their friends too much time to counter. Train. Be mindful of your environment at all times before and after. Train. Even experts can learn a thing or two from time to time by listening to, and watching others. Just my opinions, developed over 60+ years.

After adding/running a Harrington Arms comp, it came loose and jammed the gun. Full discloser, I wasn’t running lock tite like the instructions said, but it all the screws were cranked hard. It did help with recoil and muzzle rise. My point is, if it’s built into the slide it’s worth it. Dont get one that screws on a threaded barrel.

Have a single port comp from Disruptive Defense on my Canik TP9 Elite SC. Thing makes a big difference with respect to recoil. Also, it looks cool. And isn't that the real concern here?

The truth is if you want to run a compensator on your sidearm without sacrificing reliability you have to run +P ammunition when you run +P you’re also getting the most out of the compensator from a performance standpoint too you should also swap your current recoil spring out for a lighter one as well this is how you properly run a compensator

The comped xmacro isn't really a comp at all.. if u shoot the tacops version with the 3.7 barrel it's actually flatter shooting than the 3.1 inch barrel.. the cuts in the slide really doesn't do much besides reduces reciprocating mass

I'm glad you brought up the problems of a ported barrel in tight,close body firing. I imagine the same could be said for a comped pistol.

Glock 19 + Radian Afterburner = Win

How your hand/hands fit the grip on these smaller guns is very important,. I have XL hands I can't get a good grip on a small grip, I tried a few before I settled on Glock 43x it's a snappy but the full hand grip makes it manageable, S-15's mags are a plus . The first shot Kaydi took show's the violent snap these tiny guns have ! It takes A LOT of practice to learn how to shoot little guns well , And that is her personal gun !

For the FN 509. They didn't talk about if they tuned the spring for the comp. If not, totally susceptible to misfeed

It may be just me…. But the shield was designed as a carry gun. In testing the flash is comparable to the fm. And they wrap up by saying it’s too big and too much flash…. If it’s too big why was it in the comparison for an edc ? I have a shield 1.0 performance center ported and it’s smaller than a compact. Just my 2 cents

I bought the P365X Macro because I wanted the comp feature. I have covid induced arthritis in both hands that started three days after my second jab and with the compensated slide I can control it much better than the standard P365. The biggest gripe I have with the Macro is that I wanted the 365 Romeo laser, but it won’t work with the larger trigger guard. Sig said to use the Romeo 1 but it is wider than the pistol and I can’t find a holster that fits it properly.

Uni-Comp kicks ass, switched every gun I own to threaded barrel (if ones available).

She needs to put a PMM JTTC on her 365, best of both worlds

All my pistol are compensated. I never carry cause I live in California. However compensator doesn't make me a better shooter. But that's just me. In the real world simplicity is the way to go.

Agree, I love the K & K dynamic, including her faces at his range pointers 😆 although he was spot on. Do not clear your mag on the range to clear a jam. Train how you would do in actual action. Smack rack, stay in the fight, keep going. Love both K&K, keep 'em coming!

Kaydi the 365 has a magazine that is extended to make grip longer. I would try it before buying another gun

Comp is absolutely 100% the way to go. I put everything from the XMacro on a Wilson combat XL grip and I am totally satisfied with it. I run the 12 round Mag with a +2 magguts kit in it. The Perfect 20 ounce carry gun in my opinion

Why the heck didn’t you use a SHIELD plus performance center instead of the “bigger” Smith you used-doesn’t make sense when you’re comparing “carry guns” ? I had a Shield-my comped Shield plus is FAR superior……

If it's dark enough where muzzle flash is a problem, you should practice shooting more to desensitize yourself to it, and you should probably be using a weapon light to identify your target. I don't wanna hear, "oh, it ruins my night vision." If the macro seems too big, get it still and swap to an x/xl frame with some 12 rounders. The benefits outweigh the cons that you can easily overcome with some training. We're talking factory guns here. Not some hodgepodge of gun parts that were "gunsmithed" by the owner. I've been shooting comp'd guns for over a decade in the day, low-light, no-light, and under NODs. It's a non-issue in my experience.

Maybe for some folks but not for me. I don't like smoke and flash directed upward obscuring my sight picture especially at night. Might be alright for competition match shooting to squeeze out the best accuracy with lower muzzle flip but its not practical to me for concealed carry.

Wish you included the Springfield Hellcat RDP. I don't think you have yet to review it. I personally have been very comfortable using it as my everyday conceal carry, and it feels excellent to shoot.

No bells, whistles, lights, lasers or RDS on my EDC. Just a set of great Ameriglo irons for my "get off me" handgun.

Y'all did a great job on this video. You are probably correct on it being you on the pistol that isn't feeding well. Maybe grip issue. I have a pistol that I can not get to cycle more than two or three rounds. A young lady at the range said it was my grip. I changed my grip and it did fine. next time I shot it - jam time - have allowed 4 other folks to shoot it with no problems. I am a smaller older person, a house mouse/rat in USMC, with smaller hands and gripping issues. I have other pistols that work flawlessly. Needless to say, I don't edc that one.

Just got the xmacro and shot it today. It’s great. Generally carry either a fn 509 MRD c or a sig p320 x carry. Both are great. If you don’t want a comp and still want the sig you could do the sig p365 xl and then buy the new macro grip.

All my ported or comped guns are big heavy competition guns. None of my carry guns have comps or ports. All my competition guns have trigger work and customization. None of my carry guns do. The only thing I put on my carry guns are lights.

You can just get the MP 9 shield 2.0 with the ported barrel for comp. I have one and it's pretty nice.

3rd pistol FN 509 Disqualified. Why I use a Revolver. Revolvers do not jam. Never buy that pistol. It will let you down when you need it the most. It should not matter the brand of ammo for a 9mm. FN 509 jammed. 355 X-Macro seems a steady fire pistol. Probably a safe buy.

Flash profile is not good for me, it kills your night vison.

No comp on mine. But my own will be ported by Mag-Na-Port as mine is a M&P 2.0 10mm. With a 4.625 inch barrel and no safety lever.

I like ports/comps for big revolvers and race guns but I like my carry/duty gun to be straight up. I've done enough low light shooting over the years to know the flash can get disorienting for me. Good defensive ammo typically uses powders that reduce flash in shorter barrels too. Great video. Keep 'em going.

My x macro is my favorite gun I have owned in decades

I have a Gen5 G17 with a Strike Industries Mass Driver and it is flawless in operation and does not require a threaded barrel. I also have a Gen5 G17MOS with a Red Dot installed and a Titanium guide rod assy. The Mass Driver is amazing in its ability to return to target over the much heavier G17 with RD sight and other mods. Unfortunately, it is only available for the G17 and G19 Gen 3/4/5. Hope they will eventually release models for 43X/48 and maybe Sig P365 /320.

That gun needs a lighter recoil spring to allow the slide to move faster, the shooter will feel more but it will work.

Comp no. Not a factor to me. I carry a 1911 in a shoulder holster, or a FN 503 IWB, which depends on the weather and what I am wearing.

Looking at the Radian Ramjet/Afterburner combo, they're just so hard to find.

Whatever is " popular" sells. Competition World is shooting stationary targets at pre determined distances. Guns Will have recoil no matter what power up and use some muscle. Hit that gym.

Giving up your position with the flash? We arent sniping with them lol I know you were kind of just spit balling possible negatives, but I had to laugh. I carry a P365X and I am going to get an X macro eventually. My reasoning is that with running a red dot, it can really help with follow up shots, that and I dont really like any of the light options for my P365X, I either dont like the light, or they stick out too far.

Guess it depends on the person and training. Comped P30L and zero probs with size or weight. Only awkward when sitting to eat at restaurants or things like that. Mentally feels like world sees it despite it being pretty covered with loose outerwear.

Idk how i feel about a gun that has a compact frame and slide but has a micro size barrel. I mean your still only getting the accuracy of a mocro compact in the size of a compact. Thats how i see it when i ahoot it

Kaydi, have you tried putting an X/XL grip module on your P365 to make it a P365X or is the trade-off of losing some concealability not worth it for the extra grip area and added capacity for you?

I have a shadow systems MR920, with a Suarez International street comp. Makes it the same length as a G17 and there's a noticeable difference in recoil...not ammo picky at all, can't complain....maybe I got lucky?

I have a Taurus GX4 with a Lakeline ported barrel and it helps keep the snap under control. Easier to stay on target for sure. It's not going to snag on anything, but it does make a little mess. Works for me.

My conceal carry is a Glock 43x. I don' t feel any need to compensate, as your describe in this video, but I *did* get a heavier rod, to help suck up some of that recoil energy, and I seem to like that option

In NJ we can't have threaded barrel so it seriously limits your ability to run a comp. I'm trying to get the Radian Ramjet Afterburner Comp but it's been impossible to find for Gen 5.

Idk if it's the camera not catching it or what, but every couple of rounds fired there wasn't any flash. So I'm sitting here wondering what you guys mean when I'm not seeing the flash half of the time. Unless it's just the gun itself not flashing with every single round that's fired.
