Yes literally in Canada: the government is using the traceability of Bitcoin transactions as a way to block funds at centralized exchanges, trace values that were donated and trace backwards to locate people who have donated to political causes. This is created a chilling effect in which people are afraid to use even Bitcoin to challenge their government.

This is true. If you are one transaction in 100 or one in a billion, the TXO indelibly and instantly identifies both the sender and receiver, the wallet contents of both, and the transaction history of both. Saying that it is significantly obscured by the number of transactions and users is an attempt to gloss over it's greatest flaw.

"Bigger anonymity set" of Bitcoin is completely irrelevant - the total transparency of the crowd makes the size of the crowd irrelevant - Chainalysis and others like them made any attempts at BTC anonymity obsolete.
@edwardmclean5373
@edwardmclean5373 2 года назад
That is not a "valid counter argument". You are answering a question that wasn't asked. If the question is "Should you use Monero for privacy?", The answer is yes. Just yes. If you are even asking that question, it's a safe assumption that a user has the OPTION of choosing Monero or not, or they wouldn't have asked if they should use it. The "liquidity" is irrelevant as long as 1) It's accepted as a form of payment for a transaction you want to make, and 2) You have the necessary value in Monero to complete the transaction. If the transaction value you need to transfer is literally so large that you can't obtain enough Monero, then it's disqualified regardless of it's privacy. If it's not accepted as payment, it's disqualified regardless of it's privacy. Why would you even try to claim "99%" - it's 100% as long as it's accepted and you have enough to complete the transaction.
@edwardmclean5373
@edwardmclean5373 2 года назад
Furthermore, "higher anonymity set", really? On a pseudo-anonymous transparent ledger? I can't believe you would make that assertion, especially less than two weeks after a chain analysis representative testified before Senate to Senator Elizabeth Warren that Bitcoin had "insufficient liquidity" to be able to be used as a tool around sanctions, and that their chain analysis technology would likely be able to trace and de-anonymize the transactions. Now was that representative incentivized to overstate or over sell the capabilities of his company to government? That's very possible, but lying before the Senate is also criminal, no? That doesn't mean he didn't lie - but you would think he might want to be more careful about statements like that, no? lol.
@trappedcat3615
@trappedcat3615 2 года назад
I agree, but I think the idea is that you potentially leak your activity through other parties, not through Monero itself. For example, a clumsy friend you transact with could documrnt the tansaction on their end for auditing and then jot down your name or services. No big deal right? Only now it looks suspicious to prying eyes because it was a uniquely shielded transaction.
@edwardmclean5373
@edwardmclean5373 2 года назад
@@trappedcat3615 If a participant in a transaction is given your identity out of band, and if they report it to someone without your permission, that's no fault of the protocol. And no, it's not suspicious being "uniquely shielded" - every transaction on the Monero blockchain is handled the same way, so no transaction is unique. You also have the option to provide a "view key" for a transaction to reveal a transaction to an auditor.
@trappedcat3615

The transaction history obfuscation of Monero is enough to poke holes in any rational legal argument that you are responsible for the action some other person took with your Monero. It also makes it exceedingly hard to even connect the two so that you even would end up in a court of law. Of course men with guns can still pick you in jail, but this is unlikely to happen in a place where there is still a basic presumption of innocence which is enforced by law.

These privacy coins are the 'cash' of the internet and surveillance coins are now looking somewhat like a traditional bank account although even worse as everyone and general public can see your transactions and balances, not only the government and bank. @DerekF-u7e 2 года назад
I think it's less likely we see a large scale crackdown on bitcoin (possibly other privacy coins and generally shitcoins) instead, as the US adopts it's own digital currency the "takeover" of bitcoin will begin. Whereby large financial institutions will enter the space en-masse and monopolise on/off ramps and it'll become just like the NYSE. You'll still be able to use bitcoin but few and few people will actually own it themselves as hedge funds etc takeover the majority of the liquidity. The majority of long time holders will get rich and simply not care and those who have never interacted with it will only do so through their own banks or institutions they've always dealt with. Why ban it when you can pull a corporate takeover and milk it for all it's worth?
@weathercontrol0

I think CBDC's may accelerate adoption of normal cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Monero, if you already use digital money, why not use better one that not affected my infinite inflation Of course government will try to make everyone's life harder by banning use of cryptocurrencies, but you can't prevent the use of it, you can only punish people for using it, you already can transact with people using tor in almost any wallet software, so people will just do it quietly

Anonymity set in bitcoin is bigger? I don't understand. What anonymity set? Wouldn't you need bitcoin to be anonymous in the first place to consider the anonymity set? Or are you saying specifically about the users who are using CoinJoin? The clear direction the bitcoin network is going towards to is that a very big proportion of its transactions are made by completely known entities due to forced, imposed KYC worldwide. Hi Andreas! A question I can't wrap my head around: What prevents "hackers" from generating random private keys (since keys are just large numbers)? Why can't I go ahead and generate a random private key (+public key with it) and find out if there is existing bitcoin locked with it? If I find there is, I can "steal" it (because I have the private key). And repeat this billions, trillions of times. Why aren't people doing this? Is it not possible?

There are 1461501637330902918203684832716283019655932542976 possible addresses. A trillion is 0.00000000000000000000000000000000007%. That would be like looking for a needle in all the hay stacks in the world. Their computing power would be better spent mining Bitcoin.

That said, I think it’s been done to wallets where the user didn’t use a randomly generated seed phrase. It would be worth it to run through an entire dictionary or even famous quotes to find the bozo who created a wallet with the seed phrase “potato” or “this is Sparta”

Yes, you might be able to select a private key which already belongs to some wallet with coins on it. However, the set of all private keys is so big (2^256), the chance of being lucky to hit one of those wallets is very small. You also have to take into consideration additional words as passwords being input while generating these keys, so you could multiply this big number with another one, reducing the probability to even lower number. Now with the use of BIP32, it adds another 2^256 combinations since it uses key derivation based on this 2^256 seed. It's really not that easy to hit such wallet.

Aanton i respect you a lot and thanks for saying that about Monero. I just want to add. That is 100% accurate in terms of size. Maybe 2-10billion mc vs 400 billion doesnt compare today correct! However lets change the facts. Remember solana was just 16 months ago leas then 100 million marketcap. It reached 100 billion in a short time. Doge reached i think 70billon many other example eth nearly 100s of billions. The fact today is the liquidity issue. The fact 10 years from now maybe not so. Given how 100billion can be changed in the matter of months in crypto. As an optimistic individual. Id like to believe one day the adoption and value proposition for monero becomes sought after like a switch of a light. That the liquidity can storm in without warning. Bitcoin did the same thing. Less then 200 billion around 4-6k then 70k. Its not improbable to know who values monero as the ultimate store of value at some point in time. As it is very much scarce and intriguing to many original bitcoiners who dare to discuss another alt coin as a store of value lol

Gonna age like milk. The participant pool being slightly bigger in BTC doesn't matter. Chain-crawling script can still mostly figure out identity, and this ability doesn't quickly go away when you scale the participant set. Put differently, 1m people using BTC is still less anonymous than 200k people using XMR. In terms of his arguments against XMR liquidity vs. BTC, that's a much easier problem to solve (could be solved in weeks with viral adoption) than the inherent privacy flaw in BTC. Privacy is binary, either you have it or you don't. XMR is much closer to 1 than 0. BTC's privacy is so weak it might as well be 0.

The main problem is that it is nearly impossible to enter or exit the Monero ecosystem without giving up your identity. Since no one is really using Monero you always have to change it back at some point (to BTC for instance) in which case you better off using Coinjoin or some other onchain obfuscation method.

@@iras66 Coinjoin is not illegal, but it is expensive. And it CAN be a reason for an exchange not to accept funds. Just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean it never will. Also, "no way to enter or exit without giving up your identity" is a nonsense argument. If your entry or exit is a KYC exchange, then just like Bitcoin, yes the exchange knows how much you buy, trade, move off the exchange, or sell. But that's ALL it knows. So if you want true anonymity, don't use a KYC exchange. Even if you do use a KYC exchange, it's still better for privacy than Bitcoin.

BTC is the best solution to service denial attacks. Why? To prevent 'service denail attacks' you need energy. History shows that the more energy you use for example the energy behind a knife vs a gun, which are both just metal, the more superior the prevention of a denial of a service attack. Mining BTC aka Proof of work is a superior piece of metal in enegy use. BTC are sertainly a medium of exchange and a store of value however it is by far the most ethical weapon for self defense.

Bitcoin could make this better if they implemented Confidential Transactions.
