Should You Visit Halong Bay? 🇻🇳 Is This Vietnam Cruise Overrated?

If there’s one thing you should do in Vietnam, it’s to take a Halong Bay Cruise. At least that’s what everyone says online. Is that true, though? In this video I see whether or not the Halong Bay cruise is overrated.
I went to Halong Bay with Phoenix Cruiser in December 2022, a smaller and cheaper cruise option compared to many of the normal luxury cruises, and I indeded to see if the place really lives up to its hype.
In this video I show you the excursions and the activities on the cruise, along with food and things to do on board. The things included on this cruise were:
- A visit to the Surprise Cave
- Hiking or swimming on Titop Island
- Kayaking or rafting at Luon cave
- Spring rolls cooking class
- And of course, tons of wonderful food and excitings views of the Halong Bay UNESCO World Heritage Site
During this video I show you my thoughts about the different activities, the area, and I also offer some comments on the history and formation of Halong Bay...and some thoughts on the exploitation of the area.
So, is the cruise overrated, or is it actually worth a trip? I guess you'll have to watch the video to find out!

Halong Bay turned out to be pretty nice after all! The island looked amazing, you were right the cave seemed awesome. I have to admit the boat deck looked like a mini putt surface 😂. Hope your having the time of your life, as always stay safe till next time.

Haha it did, didn't it? The boat looked quite spartan, but after a while I realized that I didn't really need any more - so I was happy I went for a budget option. Thanks! That place was amazing, but more cool stuff are coming up of course! Cheers!

The rock island formations are beautiful and do resemble the jagged edges of dragons to my mind. Vikings always had dragon heads on their ships, do you know why?

It was mostly to put fear into the people who saw them. And funnily enough, they're not "dragons" per se but rather gigantic snakes instead, like the Midgard serpent, or Lindorm "dragons" in mythology.

I did a 3D/2N cruise in November, '22. $490/$770 couple (USD.) I had the same experience: it's WAY too crowded and VERY touristy! I do take exception to your saying a simple day cruise isn't a good idea. We spend LOTS of money and, like the 17 or 18 overnight vessels that accompanied us everywhere, we saw very little. The boats move ONLY when picking up or dropping off passengers. I'd estimate we were actually underway for less than 30 minutes total over the three-day period. You'll see just as much on a day cruise - and don't buy the "but you'll miss Lan Ha Bay!" Not a concern. Both Ha Long and Lan Ha are identical. I'd be tempted to do your cruise if I could get it for $150 like you did, but, otherwise, "been there, done that."

I was happy with this trip, especially for the price - but I can imagine that I would have been much less satisfied if I'd paid more. And I don't know about a day trip. I really wanted time to watch the sunset and the morning mists. But yeah most likely just a matter of the price!

I did Ha Long bay and cruises in Phuket, I like cruise from Phuket more because more cruises to choose, more bang for the buck, I got the feeling that I got rip-off on Ha Long Bay cruise unless I got incentive from the Ha Long cruise company to do the advertising for them .

Yeah I would have loved to get some incentive as well for stuff like this. But the location was amazing either way, and not something one would see in Phuket. That's what the extra cost is for

Don't kid yourself, and don't mock "karaoke". Those luxury cruise ships offer a lot more bang for the bucks, from cabin size and convenience, more delicious food, more attentiveness from the crew.
