im forever in love with photos shot on expired/"ruined"/messed up film (as long as they're actually visible), but it's always nice to know what I'm shooting with, thanks for this!

In my experience when traveling to a country where you don't speak the language and you ask for a manual inspection, the agents will often become suspicious of you, or don't know how to deal with it, I think in some places is rare for people to ask for manual inspection or they don't see film too often. You need to have a bit of extra patience.

I asked at the Vienna airport to hand-check the film, because I was not sure about x-ray, but the agent said it's ok unless the film is ISO 1000 or higher. Photos came out without any problems after x-ray.

I've always let film go through the scanner, didn't even know you could ask TSA to hand-check stuff.

Checked baggage x-ray is a different story. Had a 5 pack go through checked baggage x-ray and all photos came out as if i had overexposed them

Fun fact the US government warned Kodak before nuclear bomb tests because after the first test a whole lot of *x-ray** film was damaged during production. I looked it up and apparently it was complaints about x-ray film not photographic film.

Took my Lomo'instant Square and Instax Wide 200 on honeymoon to Orlando at Christmas, the airport guys said it was fine to go through the scanner and, sure enough, the pictures I took came out fine. I pretty much just used the Wide as I had more film and could capture more in frame. Currently trying to justify pre-ordering a Nons SL660...

I asked and the TSA at Porto airport said it's okay. I told him I don't want to take the risk please manually handcheck but he said it can't be done. Now all photos are coming out pink and faded. Idk if the xray damaged it or the film originally got damaged during shipping. Really expensive way to figure things out at this moment.

I just flew UK to USA and back, and at both ends security looked baffled that I was asking and insisted everything had to be X-rayed. Film was totally fine and unaffected.

Well, I don't travel a lot, but in July I'm traveling with my daughter. I had doubts about X-Ray, but you know what? I'll take the risk and let's see what happens.

Just make sure it doesn’t get check and its in your carry on bag and you will be just fine.

Just ask politely, be persistent but friendly and understanding when asking for a hand check. Almost all places I have asked for a hand check have done so at various levels of willingness (no one in the US denied my request). My finding is you are more likely than not to be granted a hand check. If you are forced to xray, one pass likely wont make a huge difference for the vast majority of films (1600 and expired films excepted). It also made a big difference carrying the films out of their boxes and containers, as its quicker for them to hand check. If your films get xrayed, try not to push them in development if possible, and develop asap after getting home.

Just got back from Spain, put half a pack through and my results are a little yellow/brown. Like it's aged or lightly coffee stained. Wish I put more through lmao, it looks really nice. I will say that the airport I went through is outdated in the middle of a desert so I don't know what sort of scanners were used, assuming it was even the scanners that caused it.

Hmmm what was the temperature when you shot them? Because high heats can have photos change color.

@@JustAnotherChris It's pretty consistently 30-35c there but I don't know what else might have done it, other packs that weren't scanned were just fine or a tad magenta out of the fridge.

I had leftover film in my Polaroid camera once and ran it through the x-ray. I noticed a slightly greyish cloudiness over the photos afterwards.

Just saw this, decent advice, but I thought the damage done by Xray and Time in the plane is cumulative... so wouldn't trying to avoid both as much as possible be the best choice?

Cool to see, BUT all of my film at Schiphol Airport got completely RUINED by the x-Ray machine at the hand check. I could throw away €300 in the trash, god was I mad. All film was completed pink & completely washed our. Never let your film get through X-Ray!!!

Kodak Alaris made a warning in January 2020 that new CT scanners for carry on do affect film. Maybe Schiphol has already these new scanners?

@@lioriowibowo4842 No Polaroid 600 & Spectra. All went to waste. Don’t travel with film in Schiphol AirPort in the scanners. They got new ones that are very hard scanneds

Like I said in the video I did do this test with both polaroid and instax but for the sake of this video the SLR reason I shove Polaroid is because of how temperamental it can be so it makes for a good test. If it didn’t affect polaroid then instax will be just fine which is true.

Thank you for this video. So essentially, if your films are below 800ISO, just put them in a ziplock bag and let it go through security with your carry-on. Do not put camera or film in checked bag?

also, I just heard about storing film in refrigrator, how do you ensure that the film is not damaged during your travels? I guess my question is how long could the films stay out of a refrigrated setting and remain undamaged?

Yeah like I said in the video definitely DON’T check your film. The scanners that scan checked luggage is WAY more powerful and will ruin your film.

It’s going to be fine inside the camera I have done that tons of times with no issues. But yes you can have it hand checked as well if you wanted
