I had a cryptogenic stroke with PFO diagnosis back in 2016. At that time, I was told my PFO was too small to be the cause. I was told about PFO closure in 2018 following the FDA approval of the device, but I denied it because, afterall, I was told it was "too small" to be the source. Fast forward to now, 2022, been living life just fine, no residual stroke sxs remain, no reoccurance of incident, but now the topic of PFO closure gets brought up again. I had a repeat TEE last week because my current cardiologist was not convinced by the "too small" diagnosis. He found my PFO to be "small-medium size" and is now leaving it up to me if I want to close it. So now that Pandora's box was opened, I have to make a decision that isn't easy. Leave my healthy heart as it is, and live life on a gamble that it will never happen again, or close it hoping this device does not lead to adverse reactions within the heart in the future. 🤷‍♀️

Did you end up having the procedure done? I had a "cryptogenic" stroke in Jan 2013 ( coming up on 10 yr anniversary). I was 38yrs old at the time and no cardiac Hx. Basically my story is almost exactly the same. I just met with cardiologist to talk about closing. I've had no episodes of any kind since 2013, the Dr brought up the 2017-2018 FDA approval. Now I'm torn on whether or not to continue living like I do or have it closed. Your story is very similar to mine. Thanks for sharing

What if you didn't have a stroke, yet discovered you have PFO? Do you have to suffer any particular symptoms to indicate this corrective procedure may be beneficial to prevent an initial stroke? I can't seem to get a clear answer on this so far.

Curious if you2 have a left to right PFO or right to left. Mine is right to left so doesn’t affect my oxygen levels I’m told but apparently it has its own issues. Mine can’t be plugged so would require open heart surgery. So, just going into monitoring mode.

How small is small or medium or large?
@Moe-zo4fm
@Moe-zo4fm 4 года назад
Thank you for this video, but why is it no Dr. listens to to a patient's heart anymore? It is inexpensive, and can be very diagnostic. I have gone through so much to be diagnosed, until Resident came in and listened to my heart. She heard the soft S2/6 murmur at the left sternal border, and finally Pulmonary Hypertension was investigated and found on a right heart cath. Previous to this I have had at least 4 Echocardiograms with Doppler and no one even thought about this!!!! I was an Ultrasound tech, and is it the Dr., reading them? Or is it that Radiologist still should be doing it!!!!!
@charlesclintonmd
@charlesclintonmd 4 года назад
Murmur isn’t that frequent to hear in this condition since PFO and usual (secundum) atrial septal defects have low flow. Nonetheless, there’s usually a fixed splitting of second heart sound mainly upon standing or sitting. The basics are the basics for a reason. Auscultation is a MUST. If you had a gradde 2/6 murmur you probably had some considerable flow shifting from left to right (years in the making). Just wanted to complement on your comment. Hope you’re doing well!

I have a patent foramen ovale (PFO) hole in heart) I also have svt (supraventricular tachycardia) having ablation surgery at the end of the month to rectify the rapid heartbeat and abnormal heart rhythm. The patent foramen ovale is a benign issue that apparently a quarter of the population has but it causes an increase risk of stroke and cryptogenic stroke due to blood able to pass from right to left ventricle bypassing the lungs which apparently filter small clots from the blood supply which is a little worrisome but ok. The issue I have is that I have an uncle that has the same issue (patent foramen ovale) and is currently recovering from his 3rd (cryogenic) stroke and he is only 55 (I'm 33) and has lost complete function of the left side of his face. I messaged my cardiologist explaining this and the fact that pretty much every aliment the man has, I have had example we are the only ones in our family to have testicular torsion (very rare condition), SVT and also the only ones in the entire family to have kidneys stones and glaucoma and bad eye sight, so I'm worried to say the least... The issue I have is that the surgery to fix the svt and the surgery to "patch" the PFO are identical so in my mind it makes since that while I'm young I get the procedure done to resolve both issues being they are gonna be in there already instead of waiting to see if anything happens bc it is a "defect" and has an increased risk of stroke associated with it. Well my cardiologist states the likely hood of me having those issues is very low so he will absolutely not patch the hole?? With my family history it looks like he would be willing to fix both issues now instead of risking doing it after I have a stroke. My question is for cardiologist or doctors what should my next move be I want to get the surgery as quickly as possible to resolve the svt but I feel like I need to cancel the surgery and look for a cardiologist that is willing to fix both issues. What is the likelihood of finding a cardiologist to do that? Or should I just roll with the plan at hand?

I am in the same boat! I am frustrated with having a doctor who says it's too risky to close it and that until I show signs of a stroke there isn't anything that can be done. He states I don't need a blood thinners to lesson the risk of clotting, despite the fact that I have been rushed to the hospital twice with what felt like a heart attack or stroke. Arterial Septum Aneurysm was present as well as PFO and a positive right to left shunt and still all I get is a drop of the test results with no further call or explanation to what I'm reading. I have to research the test results only to determine that in fact I should be worried and yet I have to chase the doctor to get both studies. I am on the verge of looking for another Cardiologist. While I am young I want to prevent a life altering experience before it's too late. When there is more to be made by keeping patients sick, why expect anything better than the treatment we get. SMH

@@yaminahvannest2054 I had a stroke in 2014 and another one in 2020, then I decided to close my PFO last December. The procedure was not complicated and I was awake during the procedure. Now, after 3 months I feel fine. With Stroke, one wouldn’t know if they would survive it or not. I guess I was lucky both times. My two strokes were totally different. The first one I had a one-sided headache and I went to bed to wake up with with problems. The second time, suddenly I couldn’t make a sound and I wouldn’t have know it if I didn’t have someone in the house. I was lucky it only lasted 4 hours. Why is the doctor saying it’s risky?
