Dick Van Dyke: Aging, Joy + Rescue Dolphins!
What will you be like when you’re older?
As Jason and Peter bemoan their current state of crankiness - aches, and pains, increased lack of patience and errant hair growth, they also express their trepidation of becoming even more miserable as they age. But it doesn’t have to be that way…there can potentially be a state of real joy. Really, no really!
Joining us in-studio is an American Treasure, the personification of joy throughout life and into advanced age. Dick Van Dyke and his wife Arlene Silver joins us to talk about Dick’s life, his contributions and living with joy at 97!

Im 24 and he fills me with inspiration . I have a degenerative illness that will limit my life to my mid 30s if the treatment doesn’t come out in time, im hopeful it will. But he’s on par if not better than jerry lewis. I aspire to be a performer if I survive this, so him at his age still being so lucid and energetic means so much to me.

I was mesmerized start to finish. I worked with Jason on The Jacket episode of Seinfeld. A quick bit as hotel manager handing Lawrence Tierney a phone message that his daughter - Elaine - was going to be late, prolonging the discomfort Jason and Jerry were enduring with this bull of a General Patton type of fellow. All three were hilarious. Jason and I chatted in the makeup room. He couldn’t have been sweeter. Treated me as an equal. He and Jerry were so kind and respectful. I realized the true big fish in this town are the ones with big hearts like them and Dick handing out five dollar bills. City of Angels - a lot of them do live here.

This was a great podcast. I have loved Dick Van Dyke since I was a kid and I’m 69. He is an incredibly talented and versatile actor (drama and comedy), comedian, dancer, singer and writer. I agree with the podcast hosts that as a person, Dick Van Dyke lives his life spreading joy, laughter, kindness, gratitude, generosity, respect for others, humility and love. He is an icon and both his body of work and the man will be in our hearts forever. Thank you Mr. Van Dyke for a lifetime of entertainment. I admire you very very much. Jason Alexander, very very good interview by you and your partner in this podcast. As recently as today (12/24/2023, which is three days after the CBS airing of 98 Years of Magic), Dick Van Dyke's official website has this podcast episode featured at the top of the home page. Your central role in the CBS special Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic was perfect. And .. perfect toss of the bamboo pole! Very thankful that you and Dick Van Dyke have connected. The 98 Years of Magic show is something I'll always cherish. What Dick said at the end of the show was the perfect thing. You and the others gave a wonderful gift to him and to all of us.

Its astonishing what that man does with his body, his posture, his limbs and his face in that dance number. One movie that often gets overlooked by people is the movie The Morning After which was a made for TV movie that aired sometime in the mid 70s. I won't be a hypocrite, I always found his clowning a bit naff, (but many people loved it so who am I to argue), but the guy definitely deserves a lot of respect for his extremely brave public admissions about his alcoholism (I think it was a Dick Cavett interview from the seventies). He was so self-effacing, so genuine and came across as a thoroughly decent human being. Hopefully he helped a lot of people in difficult situations themselves with his words.

I'm pretty sure i have every Dick Van Dyke episode memorized. Sometimes before it gets a minute into it, i know the whole episode. I remember one about walnuts. I loved it, and I think Mary Poppins was about the first movie i ever saw. He's always been very special to me and my parents always told me when he was going to be on tv so i could stay up and watch him. Mary Tyler Moore was hysterical. I remember as children i heard my older sisters and their friends discuss the excellent choices made by the Petries and the Ricardo's to have twin beds. Nobody was fired up about sharing a bed with some guy, and we wondered why anybody would opt to sleep in the same bed with their husband. Really, this conversation came up alot and these shows were a source of confusion for sure. I remember making separate beds for Barbie and Ken. Really, i adored both Dick and Jerry. Idk how many times I watched angel in my pocket. ❤
