Show of the Week examines new Anthem gameplay footage, sizing up the next sci-fi shooter from the makers of Mass Effect and asking, how much Destiny is in its DNA? Later, Jane's challenge of the week is to compose an actual literal anthem for the great and fictional nation of Oxvania. (National motto: It's a Place You Can Live.) I do agree with Mike on that Anthem gameplay. That boss fight looks like a griiiiiiiiind. Like 30 minutes of standing around and pumping an army's worth of ammunition and artillery into it's face and it might finally be at half HP. Those sort of fights can work, if you make them interesting. An interesting, and challenging, mechanic to make it more vulnerable or do a large chunk of damage (Like, dropping a big rock on it?). An enemy with 1 million HP and you do 100-1000s of damage isn't hard. The only difficulty is your controller not running out of battery half way through. Or you falling asleep. Or dying of hunger.

I agree, but also having played my fair share of full on MMOs, it's a bit standard fare. Usually though if you have a balanced group (thinking ESO's 4 player groups) you can handle a end-dungeon boss without just being there for absolute daaaays.

Cris Michel WoW raids tend to be quite interesting. A fight takes 5 minutes or so but has mechanics the players have to pay attention to (unless they're overgeared or in LFR). A long boss fight can and should be really engaging

I saw the full fight live at EA Play this year the spider was shooting this webs and players were getting stuck in place the colossus with the flamethrower was having to burn the webs off them IT WAS AWESOME

As someone who does Cosmic hunting in Champions Online.... yes mega-boss fights can take an hour... at least in Champions Online. And yes, keyboard warrior fatigue is very real. I have in fact fallen asleep during fights... and often woke up to see that i'd gotten killed because I stopped doing things.

yeah i agree with mike too, when shooting something in the face stops working its not time for more bullets, its time for better guns...or peace talks. also with 4 people firing automatic weapons at that boss it looked more like if a gamer happened to work as an accountant, fell asleep at work, and had a nightmare.

Y'know, I don't mind numbers popping out of heads, but Mike does have a point that they become pretty useless if your ultimate attack doesn't do anything to the health bar on the screen. But those numbers were way too large. Sometimes, they just straight up cover the thing you're shooting, which is ridiculous.

That's the key problem I have with Anthem's design choice. In Borderlands and other games with numbers, the numbers are never the main attraction on screen. Anthem... didn't get that memo.

Can you imagine if Oxnation were accepted into the Olympics? The look of confusion on the face of the attendees as five "athletes" emerge from the lead in door of the stadium, all of these athletes are also the heads of state and the only citizens of their country, they move to take their place among the other countries teams of hundreds, all of it accompanied by a 2 min loop of the same 16 notes. Good news! The floaties are optional! Also, they mention that the boss has actually been beefed up for this fight and the Javelins have had their damage capped for this demo. The boss *is* still a bit of a bullet sponge, but unfortunately that seems to be a bit of a genre wide issue.

Oh, if you wanna talk about boss fights that take forever, but aren't actually hard, let's talk about the Adamantoise in FFXV.......That fight took me over two hours of just....blinking towards the boss' face, wailing on it only to deal an infinitesimal amount of damage, blinking away, and repeating that process over and over...Let's hope this isn't becoming a trend? Anyway, great video as usual!

Anthem headcanon, hahahaha... I love our fanfiction consumer culture. Actually, it really is fascinating the divergence from an author presenting a story that is consumed to nowadays where the fan consumes the story and then synthesizes something completely new. Heck, we all do it with you guys too. My headcanon is Jane is a secret evil overlord/mad scientist, Mike is her advanced AI robot creation which is why he is so chill and she seems to like to torment him, and Andy is her secret brother who tries to curb her evilness. ...Luke and Ellen are the naive, adorable young people who are not quite sure what they got into yet but will end up just as insane... or dead.

Takoshi Hitsamaru They've said that there will be a single-player aspect where you pick up quests and go through the campaign, but it'll only cover when you are inside the base/city. Everything outside, where you will be completing the missions or roaming around, will be the multiplayer aspect. I doubt they are going to completely go back on the promise of that single-player aspect, because they've made it sound like a fundamental part of how they've structured the game. But the more they reveal about it the more sounds like it'll be fairly shallow, and not as in-depth as they initially let on.
