Arundhati's words bring tears to my eyes. As an Indian in America, daily I enjoy the overwhelming goodwill of people from Iran to Egypt to as far as Morocco. Whether it is a Persian carpet dealer, an Egyptian furniture seller or a Moroccan restaurant, just by announcing myself as an Indian I am welcomed as a long lost brother. The dual reason is the Nehruvian foreign policy that brought decolonization and supported the Palestinians and Bollywood that celebrated the syncretic Indian culture with which the entire Islamic world can identify. Unfortunately, things are changing fast and I am afraid that being an Indian in America's diversity would not be so pleasant anymore.
