Reflection: What story is your fear telling? What story is hope telling?
Practice: The Committee Exercise
"Take every thought captive." Have you ever heard this advice in response to struggles and temptation? Well that's all well and good but what if there's a jailbreak? Then we've got voices running rampant in our head. No, I'm not talking about schizophrenia. I'm talking about those incessant voices that accuse and distract us and run across our mind like an endless Instagram feed.
"True love doesn't tell someone what to do, it reminds them who they are." This quote by Bob Goff is one of my favorites because in a world of competing opinions about what we should and shouldn't do, many of us are at a loss for the "how". Yes, I would love to be able to quiet the committee of voices in my head so I can be silent and still with God - but HOW do I actually do that?
Many times these voices lie about who you are, and who God really is, and they are like static that drowns out the still, small voice of God.
Ignoring them doesn't work.
Fighting them doesn't work.
In my experience the only thing that has actually been transformative is to engage them in God's presence and let Him walk them to the door of my heart and shut the door behind them.
