My grandmother, Mimi, has never actually gotten around to seeing any of the Star Wars movies before, so I'm in the process of correcting that by showing her the original trilogy followed by Force Awakens. Shockingly, I realized after showing her A New Hope that she seemed unaware of Vader's big reveal at the end of Empire, so I knew it would be a moment worth capturing on camera.
NOTE: People on Reddit noted that she mouths along with some dialog around 0:23. This is because I usually turn on subtitles when showing her a DVD or Blu-ray, due to her being hard of hearing. The video was also shot vertically due to a friend sitting next to Mimi who requested not to be filmed.
I am also aware that my "Obi-Wan lied" statement has caused some disagreements, but I wanted to clarify things for her since she was likely wondering about what he told Luke in A New Hope. And remember, what he said was only true "from a certain point of view".

Dávid Kanyó No it's true. Watch Empire of Dreams documentary on the making of the original trilogy. He said it in the interview for that. Also the line in the script given to the actors and crew was Obi-Wan killed your father. But shortly before filming Mark Hamill was informed what the real line was so he could react to the real line instead of the fake line the actor on set delivered.

And from about half of the fans who watched the movie in 1980 too! There was a lot of geek debate from 1980 - 1983 about Vader's claim to be Luke's father, and much of the anticipation for Return of the Jedi was built on finally getting the truth about it. This is why I cringe when I see someone immediately confirm it for newbies the moment the scene is over. Give them some uncertainty until they watch Return of the Jedi, for crying out loud. :)

Everyone saying Obi-Wan lied has obviously not payed attention to the movies. Luke confronted Obi-Wan asking why he lied, and Obi-Wan said when Anakin turned to the dark side and became Vader then Luke's father ceased to exist. Obi-Wan then said "so what I said was true, from a certain point of view."

Interesting isn't it. I read somewhere once, that after this movie came George Lucas was told by psychologists that children would think that Darth Vader was lying, unless his claim was confirmed by a trusted source. Hence, we have the scene in ROTJ, where Luke asks Yoda if what Vader said was true. Only when Yoda says 'Yes' does Luke (and the audience) accept it. I guess this applies to Grandmas too.

Likely Not Unlikely I really like revenge of the sith quite a lot too, I’m admittedly biased when it comes to the original movies just because of the crazy amount of creativity and inventing they had to do just to make the special effects work, since it was all miniatures, matte paintings, film negative tricks to stack special effects, and numerous other crazy things that went into filming those movies.

Force Awakens will come at some point, and possibly 8, 9, and the spinoffs if they also turn out good enough for me to purchase. I don't own the prequels and am not very interested in buying them, though she's free to watch them on her own accord. I actually remember her catching the last 20-30 minutes of Attack of the Clones at a relative's house and being both blown away by the effects and action, as well as remarking that Ewan McGregor was handome.

dARTHvADERGirl7 if I were introducing the franchise to new fans, I would also tell them that Obi-Wan lied. Literal explanation is better than a metaphor if you want the person to understand it fully. I don’t blame Obi-Wan for not wanting to tell Luke the truth in episode 4, but I hate him for not regretting it or asking him for forgiveness in episode 6. The “no attachments” code is another reason.

Stephen Stuart you should go read some reviews of the movie from the time it came out. The twist was actually not as well received at the time as it has been since four decades have past. You only need to look at Return of the Jedi being the lowest grossing movie of the entire franchise to understand that Empire put a lot of people off because of the twist and for not being as “fun” as the original.

Empire won the PEOPLE CHOICE award in 1980 and was rereleased THREE TIMES in theatres before Return of the Jedi was released in 1983. I knew long before I watched the movies (a few months before TFA came out) that Vader was Luke's father. I had a step dad and two step brothers that grew up watching the movies, and of course the entire internet. So even if you watch the OT first, its so unlikely today that you won't already know the twist.

@@KKoKoRR made a good point with your first comment, you lost me with your second one. it's a hard case to make that one or two films can ruin a franchise, unless you're being purposefully obtuse. the prequels ruined the original trilogy for a decade or so, now it's the sequels. they all tell a story, and you have a choice as to which movies you like or don't like. I personally really don't like attack of the clones but I respect each Star Wars movie for the story it tells and how all of it builds on each other. saying one ruins the rest of them is self defeating logic, because you're retroactively letting things you like be destroyed by things you don't. feel free to not like tfa and tlj, but for the love of god, don't let it destroy the things you love.

Replaced with an inferior version for a bunch of pisspoor movies htat are worse than the Prequels. Anyway, in regards of PT Spoilering the OT (or the other way round). You can't watch either without being spoiled about one of hte majro moments: "I am your father" if you watch the PT first, Anakins turn if you watched the OT first. (that is, of course, if you only know about Darth Vader without the stroy behind it)

Might I suggest doing a Machete Order with her and put in 2 and 3 before RotJ? That would hit her real hard seeing how Anakin actually became Vader, before seeing the last chapter that ties both in. Plus, if you're doing the Blu-Rays, if she saw RotJ without the Prequels, the phenomenal ending with Anakin's ghost appearing is gonna be turned into a moment of confusion, instead of fulfillment. That, or just move forward with the OT and find an original version lol.

If you're going to show her Force Awakens, then I would think you'd show her the prequels, too. I'd understand if you just wanted to show her the originals, but throwing Episode VII in definitely seems to imply showing the full story, and although the prequels aren't the best (except Episode III; sorry, but I like it the best of all 7 films), they still have their own important things to add to the series as a whole.

The thing is, even James Earl Jones when he read the line thought to himself "He's lying!" and wondered how they were going to play out this lie. I'm just saying the audience is _meant_ to wonder if Vader was telling the truth or not, so you shouldn't confirm it to someone who is seeing the film for the first time.

Exactly. That's what I'm thinking every time I see a video like this, with someone confirming that Vader is Luke's father. Confirming this, at this point, is pure and simple spoiler. Someone who is discovering the original trilogy should have to wait for Yoda's confirmation in ROTJ.

My Computer Science colleague, who is 36 years old, has never seen Star Wars, but some flash moments. She calls Ewoks: "Cutie bears", Stormtroopers: "White robots", Yoda: "The Muppet show guy", Leia: "The horn girl" and the worst was when she called R2D2: " The blue can trash". That sent me to the hospital.

Star Wars will always be good. Even with Disney. I still enjoyed the sequels and I don't expect them to go exactly how I wanted. I bet in 10 years we will see the sequels like we see the prequels. Also, Rogue One very well may be one of the top 3 Star Wars movies of all time. It's low-key a masterpiece.

In 10 years they will be forgotten because the characters are flat-one-dimensional, the story in incoherent and rambling, they are full of identity politics and snarkiness, plot threads that go nowhere, and stupid Harry Potteresque McGuffine hunts. This is not to mention the fact that new force powers were invented merely to propel the story forward, that the writers treated the force like a superpower that is inherited rather than learned, and that the overall plot makes everything in the OT and prequels essentially pointless.

Rienk Kroese Luke wanted to join the Imperial Academy. Telling him his father is Darth Vader, a high ranking Imperial, might have made him to really go to the academy. You know, dad's the boss, good carrier chances, father-son time etc...

Just like I wasn't lying in primary school when I told my teacher that the dog ate my homework. You see, the dog distracted me, and prevented me from getting it done. One could say that it "ate" the time I would have spent doing homework, so in that sense ate my homework. So what I told her was true, from a certain point of view. Any lie can be spun into the truth if you use Obi-Wan's method - just claim that what you originally said was a metaphor, no matter how tenuous.
